Maraw, 『Transmission001』

우리는 감정을 얼마나 정확하게 전달할 수 있을까. 입 밖으로 꺼내는 순간 감정은 문장이 되고, 문장은 누군가에게 도착하는 동안 조금씩 변형된다. 분명하게 전하고 싶었던 마음조차 잡음이 섞이고, 때로는 처음과 전혀 다른 모습으로 남는다.

신인 아티스트 ‘Maraw(Make it raw)’의 첫 EP 『Transmission001』은 바로 그 틈에서 시작한다. 명확한 메시지와 노이즈 사이, 익숙한 감정과 낯선 질감 사이. Maraw는 감정을 매끈하게 정리해 전달하기보다 그것이 발생하고 흔들리고 변형되는 순간 자체를 소리로 붙잡는다.

이름에서부터 그녀의 방향은 분명하다. Make it raw.

Maraw가 말하는 ‘raw’는 단순히 거칠고 투박한 사운드를 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 완벽하게 다듬어지기 이전, 아직 설명이나 해석이 개입하기 전의 감정에 가깝다. 보컬의 미세한 떨림과 거친 음 처리, 숨과 마찰, 의도적으로 남겨둔 노이즈까지 제거해야 할 결함이 아닌 음악의 일부가 된다.

그래서 『Transmission001』은 얼터너티브 R&B라는 기반 위에 있으면서도 익숙한 방식으로만 흘러가지 않는다. 선명한 멜로디가 모습을 드러내는 순간 불규칙한 질감이 끼어들고, 목소리와 사운드 사이에는 일부러 메우지 않은 듯한 균열이 남는다. 듣기 좋은 형태로 감정을 통제하기보다 그 균열을 통해 감정이 새어나오도록 내버려 둔다.

앨범의 제목인 ‘Transmission’, 즉 ‘전송’ 역시 이 EP를 이해하는 중요한 단서다.

무언가를 전송한다는 것은 발신자와 수신자가 존재한다는 뜻이다. 하지만 모든 메시지가 처음의 형태 그대로 도착하는 것은 아니다. 전달되는 동안 신호는 흔들리고, 잡음이 끼어들고, 일부는 유실된다. 『Transmission001』에서 감정 역시 그렇게 이동한다.

첫 트랙 ‘Karma’를 시작으로 동명의 ‘Transmission001’, 기호만으로 이름 붙은 ‘..··—···’, ‘coffyy’, ‘NOISE > MESSAGE’, 그리고 ‘Rose 구애 그리고 낱말은 관심없어’까지. 여섯 트랙은 하나의 감정을 친절하게 해설하기보다 서로 다른 형태의 신호처럼 이어진다. 특히 **‘NOISE > MESSAGE’**라는 제목은 이 앨범이 취하는 태도를 가장 직접적으로 드러낸다. 때로는 완성된 문장보다 그 주변에 남은 잡음이 더 많은 것을 말한다.

우리는 보통 노이즈를 제거해야 할 것으로 생각한다. 음악에서는 깨끗한 음질을 위해, 대화에서는 정확한 의미 전달을 위해 잡음을 걷어낸다. 그러나 Maraw는 반대로 묻는다. 그 과정에서 우리가 지워버린 것들에 오히려 감정의 본질이 남아 있는 것은 아닐까.

말끝의 떨림, 숨을 들이마시는 짧은 순간, 제대로 설명되지 않는 기분. 문장으로 옮기면 사라져버리는 것들이 있다. 『Transmission001』은 그것들을 굳이 정돈하지 않는다. 지나친 불완전함처럼 들릴 위험까지 감수하면서 소리를 통제하지 않는 이유도 여기에 있다.

그 결과, 익숙했던 감정은 조금 낯설어진다.

사랑이나 불안, 욕망처럼 이미 수없이 노래되어 온 감정이라 해도 그것이 언제나 같은 형태로 경험되는 것은 아니다. Maraw는 익숙한 감정에 낯선 질감을 입히는 대신, 어쩌면 그 감정 안에 처음부터 존재했던 이질적인 면을 끄집어낸다. 우리가 익숙하다고 믿었던 감정 역시 가까이 들여다보면 설명하기 어려운 잡음과 모순으로 가득하다는 듯이.

그래서 『Transmission001』의 불완전함은 미완성을 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 이 앨범에서 가장 의도적으로 완성된 부분에 가깝다. 매끈하게 정리된 결과 대신 감정이 음악으로 변환되는 과정에서 발생한 우연과 균열까지 기록했기 때문이다.

그리고 제목 뒤에 붙은 숫자 ‘001’은 자연스럽게 다음 전송을 상상하게 한다. 이것이 Maraw가 보내는 첫 번째 신호라면, 『Transmission001』은 자신이 어떤 방식으로 감정을 포착하고 음악으로 바꾸는 아티스트인지 알리는 첫 기록이기도 하다.

낯선 감정의 소용돌이는 하나의 메시지가 되고, 메시지는 전송되는 동안 다시 노이즈와 뒤섞인다. 무엇이 메시지고 무엇이 잡음인지 그 경계가 흐려질 때, 오히려 이전에는 들리지 않던 감정이 선명해진다.

Does Familiarity Have a Strange Side, Too?

How accurately can we communicate what we feel? The moment an emotion is put into words, it becomes a sentence—and as that sentence travels toward someone else, it begins to shift. Even the feelings we try to express with absolute clarity can pick up noise along the way, sometimes arriving in a form entirely different from where they began.

Emerging artist Maraw (Make it raw) begins her debut EP, Transmission001, precisely within that gap: between a clear message and noise, between familiar emotions and unfamiliar textures. Rather than refining emotions into something polished and easily understood, Maraw captures the very moments in which they emerge, tremble, distort, and transform into sound.

Her name alone makes that direction clear: Make it raw.

For Maraw, “raw” does not simply mean rough or unpolished. It points instead to the state of an emotion before it has been perfected—before explanation or interpretation has had the chance to intervene. Subtle tremors in the voice, abrasive processing, breaths, friction, and deliberately preserved noise are not imperfections to be removed, but integral parts of the music itself.

Built on a foundation of alternative R&B, Transmission001 therefore refuses to move entirely within familiar boundaries. Just as a distinct melody begins to take shape, irregular textures interrupt it. Gaps remain between the voice and the surrounding sound, almost as though they have deliberately been left unfilled. Rather than controlling emotion into a form that is easy to listen to, Maraw allows it to leak through those cracks.

The album’s title, “Transmission,” offers another key to understanding the EP.

To transmit something implies both a sender and a receiver. Yet not every message arrives exactly as it was sent. Signals fluctuate. Noise interferes. Pieces disappear along the way. In Transmission001, emotion travels in much the same way.

From the opening track “Karma” through the title track “Transmission001,” the symbolically titled “..··—···,” “coffyy,” “NOISE > MESSAGE,” and finally “Rose 구애 그리고 낱말은 관심없어,” the six tracks unfold less like explanations of a single emotion and more like signals arriving in different forms. “NOISE > MESSAGE,” in particular, articulates the album’s philosophy most directly: sometimes, what surrounds a message can reveal more than the completed sentence itself.

We usually think of noise as something that should be eliminated. In music, we remove it in pursuit of clarity; in conversation, we filter it out to communicate meaning more precisely. Maraw reverses that logic and asks another question: what if the things we erase in that process are where the essence of emotion actually remains?

The tremble at the end of a sentence. A brief inhale. A feeling that refuses to be properly explained. Some things disappear the moment we translate them into words. Transmission001 makes little effort to organize them. Even at the risk of sounding excessively imperfect, Maraw resists overcontrolling the sound.

As a result, familiar emotions begin to feel slightly unfamiliar.

Love, anxiety, desire—these are emotions that have been sung about countless times, yet they are never experienced in exactly the same form. Rather than simply dressing familiar emotions in unfamiliar textures, Maraw seems to uncover the strangeness that may have existed within them all along. What we believe we know intimately, the EP suggests, may reveal itself upon closer inspection to be filled with noise, contradiction, and things that resist explanation.

The imperfections of Transmission001, then, do not signify incompleteness. If anything, they may be among the record’s most deliberate elements. Instead of documenting only a polished result, the EP preserves the accidents, fractures, and distortions that emerge as emotion is translated into music.

And the “001” attached to its title naturally invites the thought of another transmission to come. If this is the first signal Maraw has chosen to send, Transmission001 also serves as an opening statement—a first record of how the artist captures emotion and transforms it into sound.

A vortex of unfamiliar emotion becomes a message, and as that message travels, it becomes entangled with noise once again. When the boundary between message and interference begins to dissolve, emotions that previously went unheard can suddenly become clearer.
