‘망상록’은 아직 일어나지 않은 일에 대한 불안과 자기연민, 머릿속에서 끊임없이 부풀어 오르는 생각들을 일기처럼 기록한 앨범이다. 누구나 경험하지만 쉽게 드러내지 않는 내밀한 감정들을 원진 특유의 유머와 낭만으로 풀어냈다. 선공개곡 ‘캔디가 생각나’, ‘겨울왕자’를 포함한 총 11곡이 수록됐으며, 피처링 없이 전곡의 작사와 작곡을 직접 맡아 자신의 음악적 색깔을 선명하게 드러냈다.

Balming Tiger’s Wonjin Releases Debut Solo Album ‘망상록,’ Turning Anxiety and Fantasy Into Romance

Wonjin, singer-songwriter and member of alternative K-pop collective Balming Tiger, released his debut solo studio album, 망상록, on October 20. Marking a new chapter in his artistic journey, the album introduces a deeply personal musical identity beyond his work with the collective.

Across 11 tracks, including previously released singles “캔디가 생각나” and “겨울왕자,” Wonjin explores the anxieties, self-pity, and imaginary scenarios that endlessly occupy the human mind. Written and composed entirely by Wonjin without featured artists, the album transforms private thoughts and emotional contradictions into a distinctive blend of humor, romance, and introspection.

At the center of 망상록 is a character inspired by animated protagonists: a man who presents himself as effortlessly cool and emotionally invulnerable, only to reveal his insecurities and awkwardness at crucial moments. The contrast between his carefully constructed image and vulnerable reality creates a sense of dark comedy that runs throughout the record.

Musically, the album draws inspiration from East Asian psychedelic music of the 1960s and 1970s, blending the nostalgic sensibilities of vintage Korean pop with contemporary production. Dreamlike textures, retro romanticism, and distinctly Korean melodic expressions shape a sound that feels both familiar and unconventional.

Wonjin’s experiences touring internationally with Balming Tiger also played a significant role in shaping the album. Performing for audiences across different languages and cultures led him to reconsider the importance of his native language and cultural identity. As a result, Korean remains at the heart of his songwriting, while English, Japanese, and internet-inspired expressions appear throughout the lyrics, creating a playful and unpredictable lyrical style.

The title track, “유랑가,” follows a self-proclaimed romantic wanderer who imagines himself strong and independent but becomes hopelessly vulnerable in the face of love. Through the contrast between dramatic self-confidence and emotional fragility, the song humorously examines loneliness, longing, and masculine bravado.

Its accompanying music video, co-directed by Balming Tiger’s Jan’ Qui and San Yawn, portrays a solitary wanderer traveling along a mist-covered blue road at dawn, visually reflecting the song’s melancholic and romantic atmosphere.

Moving beyond his identity as a member of Balming Tiger, Wonjin uses his debut solo album to explore a musical world entirely his own. By transforming anxiety, insecurity, and self-pity into humor and poetic imagination, 망상록 offers an intimate introduction to his evolving artistic vision.
