‘Clayface’ Brings Body Horror to Life With 18 Stages of Practical Makeup
As Clayface arrives in South Korean theaters on October 21, new production details reveal the meticulous craftsmanship behind the film’s disturbing physical transformations.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface follows Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a Hollywood actor whose face and career are destroyed following a devastating incident. After undergoing an experimental nanotechnology procedure to restore his appearance, Hagen experiences horrifying physical mutations that set him on a path of revenge.
At the heart of the production was the challenge of making the gradual deterioration of the human body feel disturbingly real. Watkins drew inspiration from medical and dermatological references to ground the transformations in realism. Legacy Effects, the special effects studio known for its work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and The Suicide Squad, joined the production to bring the character’s transformation to life.
The team developed 18 distinct stages of practical makeup, combining them with CGI to create a total of 27 stages of physical transformation. Thin silicone materials were used to replicate the way skin stretches and sags under gravity, while macro lenses captured the intricate textures and unsettling details of the prosthetics.
For lead actor Tom Rhys Harries, the transformation extended far beyond the screen. Each day required between two and four hours of makeup application, including restrictive contact lenses and mouthpieces that made speaking difficult. Harries explained that the physical discomfort and limitations of the prosthetics ultimately helped him connect more deeply with his character.
Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios and a producer of the film, emphasized the irreplaceable tactile quality and realism of practical effects, expressing pride in the production’s commitment to traditional techniques in an increasingly digital filmmaking landscape.
By combining elaborate practical makeup with digital effects, Clayface transforms bodily deterioration into a visceral cinematic experience. Beyond its grotesque imagery, the film explores the tragedy of a man who loses not only his appearance but also his identity and place in the world.
Directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, and David Dencik, Clayface opens in South Korean theaters on October 21.
