By Kary H. Rho
“Hey now, hey now, this is what dreams are made of.”

When the Dream Becomes Real Life After Obsession marked a turning point for Megan Lawless, the actor found herself moving at a whole new speed—trusting her instincts onscreen while thinking more deeply about who she wants to be beyond it.
By Kary H. Rho
These days, Megan Lawless spends a lot more time in makeup chairs. There are stylists pulling looks, photo shoots filling the calendar, and events to prepare for—all the once-unfamiliar rituals of a career moving at a vastly different pace. The shift didn't arrive in one sudden burst. It happened gradually: as routines with her publicist, Angela, became second nature, Lawless caught herself living inside a version of life she had spent years imagining. “That was when I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, maybe I’ve actually made it,’” she recalls.
Much of that acceleration came with Obsession, the film that kicked off a fresh chapter in her career. Yet even as the scenery around her changes, Lawless doesn't feel that the person at the core has altered all that much. “My day-to-day life has changed, but it doesn’t feel like I’m a very different person.”
Success, as she has discovered, is far less transformative than it appears from the outside. Meeting people whose careers once felt impossibly out of reach served as a reminder of how ordinary everyone remains beneath the credits, premieres, and publicity. “When you meet a lot of successful people, you realize that everyone is just human at the end of the day,” she says. A growing résumé doesn't dissolve insecurities or difficult days. What has shifted is Lawless’s ability to pause, look around, and recognize that the goals she worked toward for years are finally coming to fruition. “Right now, especially, I feel genuinely proud of myself—that everything I’ve worked toward for so long is actually happening.”
That same push and pull shapes her approach to craft. Lawless describes herself as analytical, sometimes excessively so—someone whose default instinct is to break things down until she understands their mechanics. Acting, however, has required her to loosen that grip. “My best work comes from exploring, collaborating with my scene partner, and trusting my instincts in the moment,” she says. The more she attempts to solve a performance in advance, the easier it is to step outside the scene and watch herself rather than simply inhabit it. Thus, she has learned to leave room for organic discovery.
On the set of Obsession, director Curry Barker and co-star Cooper Tomlinson often reiterated a simple piece of advice: have fun. “It’s easy to take everything very seriously—which is good—but it’s just as important to balance that out by reminding yourself that you’re having fun,” Lawless notes. She views that liberation as essential to the film's success. The cast was making a movie, but they were also actively responding to one another, experimenting, and letting scenes drift into unscripted territory. “At the end of the day, we’re doing something so joyous.” For Lawless, the film's most striking moments happened when everyone stopped trying to manufacture them.
That very quality drew her to Sarah, her character in Obsession. Sarah is unfiltered, even when honesty risks making others uncomfortable. “She’s not afraid of being truthful, even if it might hurt someone's feelings,” Lawless says. “She prioritizes honesty over everything, and I really admire that.” Stepping into Sarah’s shoes prompted Lawless to reflect on how she navigates her own increasingly public career—and how to remain authentically herself through it all.
Her performances tend to stem from familiar emotional truths rather than intellectually constructed ones. Lawless draws directly from lived experiences and real-world sensations, carrying them straight into her work. “A lot of my work is grounded in realness, pulling from feelings I experience in my day-to-day life,” she says. If an audience were to watch her filmography back-to-back, she hopes they feel less the mechanics of the craft and more the genuine heart behind it. “I hope people can feel that visceral connection through the screen—that my heart is fully in my work.”
Oddly enough, one of the role’s greatest challenges had little to do with emotional heavy lifting or character study. It was her hair. Lawless had worn it long for most of her life, so cutting it significantly shorter for Sarah felt unexpectedly personal. “Hair often feels tied to your identity,” she reflects. “It’s very sacred.” On set, the haircut belonged strictly to the character; off set, however, she had to navigate her own daily life looking distinctly different from the version of herself she had known for years. “I had to figure out how to keep feeling like myself even after losing my hair.” What seemed like a simple aesthetic change turned into a profound exercise in decoupling appearance from self-perception. “It was a great personal challenge,” she says. “I grew a lot from that experience.”
Looking back at the film now, the moments that linger longest with Lawless aren't her own. She speaks enthusiastically about watching her castmates perform, bringing up scenes near the end of the movie that she still reflects on. “Getting to witness my friends do brilliant work” remains one of her most cherished memories from production. Even as her own profile rises, she retains the genuine awe of an artist who loves watching others shine.
As Obsession reaches Korean audiences, Korea feels increasingly close to home for Lawless. Her earliest connection to the culture came through a close college friend, JoJo, who grew up in Los Angeles’ Koreatown and introduced her to local eateries. Korean cuisine quickly became one of her favorites—“second only to Chinese food,” she adds with a laugh. She has also developed a keen interest in Korean skincare and fashion, though Korean cinema has left the deepest mark. Citing Bong Joon Ho as one of the directors she admires most, Lawless dreams of collaborating with him someday. “Parasite is simply one of the best films of all time to me.” She is also a repeat viewer of Squid Game.
“Ultimately, when I travel, I love experiencing a culture on a deeper level and learning its history,” she says. Her curiosity extends far beyond global trends to the rich context underneath. “I really want to learn much more about Korean culture than what I know right now.”
When Lawless contemplates her future, her vision naturally reaches beyond her filmography. While making strong work remains vital, she refuses to let her career become the sole measure of her identity. “I don’t want to be defined only by my work,” she says. What matters more is how she treats others, the warmth she leaves behind, and how she channels her growing platform. As her influence expands, she plans to be intentional about giving back to her community. “I want to be a good person and a good woman for many people.”
None of this implies a lack of ambition. Lawless sought this path, worked tirelessly for it, and allows herself to feel proud now that it is unfolding. Yet she seems increasingly aware that success isn't just about arriving at a long-imagined destination. It is about recognizing yourself once you get there—and pausing to take in the view before rushing toward whatever comes next.
If she could speak to the younger version of herself standing nervously before her very first audition, Lawless would offer words rooted in patience: “Everything’s gonna work out in the time that it’s supposed to.” Stay the course. Trust the timing. It is a belief much easier to hold now, surrounded by tangible proof: the roles, the shoots, the events, and the quiet realization that what once lived only in her imagination has steadily become real life.
When asked what song would soundtrack her life right now, Lawless skips the obscure or deliberately cool. After a moment's thought, she quotes a familiar line from The Lizzie McGuire Movie:
“Hey now, hey now, this is what dreams are made of.”
It’s nostalgic, playful, and remarkably accurate.
For Lawless, life is no longer about chasing a distant dream from afar. Pieces of it have already settled comfortably into her everyday routine. The task now is to keep moving forward without losing the spark that made her fall in love with the craft in the first place—trusting her instincts, staying open to surprise, and knowing when to stop and savor the landscape she worked so hard to reach.
Sometimes, that is how a dream quietly becomes real life.
