Fearless at 40,000 Feet: Jim Keyes on Why Knowledge Is the Antidote to Fear
This one begins on a private jet. On the tarmac at Santa Monica Airport in Los Angeles, we step aboard a jet that had just landed from Dallas. The cabin still carries the quiet hum of transcontinental movement, a kind of suspended energy that feels fitting for what’s about to unfold. This isn’t just any aircraft, it belongs to, and is piloted by, none other than Jim Keyes, the former CEO of 7-Eleven and Blockbuster, a figure whose career arcs through some of the most defining shifts in modern retail and media history. A man who has stood at the crossroads of industries in transformation, and, as it turns out, someone whose personal story began in conditions that feel almost impossible to reconcile with the trajectory that followed. What does it take for a child born into a home without running water to eventually sit at the helm of multi-billion-dollar corporations? We start at the very beginning.
“It turns out it was the best thing that ever could have happened to me.” Jim smiles as he reflects on a childhood defined constraint. Like many working-class American families, Jim’s household was stretched thin. There were too many children, and not enough money. Both parents worked in factories, life measured in scarcity rather than stability. His father built the family home himself, but never fully finished it. The family relied on a hand pump outside, hauling water in galvanized buckets. The toilet was an outdoor outhouse. By the time Jim was five, his mother had had enough. She left the family and disappeared with another man. Eventually, the house itself was declared unfit for habitation. Jim remembers being around ten years old when he came home from school and saw a large red notice posted on the front door. “I had to look up the word condemned, I didn’t know what it meant”
The family was forced out. His father, already in poor health, was sent to a VA hospital for treatment. Jim began moving between the homes of his older siblings, before eventually reconnecting with his mother. “What I was able to learn is that the very things that hurt the most, the adversity that we face, sometimes becomes our superpower.” It was during this unstable period that Jim began to notice something: the way environment shapes destiny. He saw friends around him slowly being consumed by circumstance, turning to theft and crime, not out of malice, but out of resignation. A belief that their conditions defined their limits. Jim chose differently. For him, the answer was education, the only way out. Looking back, he says the most important realization of his life was not that he was smart. He simply worked harder. To earn an A, he had to push himself far beyond what came naturally. And he was willing to do it, over and over again. That discipline became the foundation of everything that followed.
His first professional role came at Gulf Oil Corporation, where he interned and was eventually hired full-time after graduation. In Pittsburgh, he worked in mergers and acquisitions, a space he genuinely enjoyed. But corporate reshuffling soon disrupted that trajectory: Gulf Oil was acquired by Chevron, forcing yet another recalibration of direction. Then came another twist. 7-Eleven acquired the oil company, and Jim transitioned into what would become one of the defining chapters of his career. “The important message here is, in my book Education Is Freedom I talk about change a lot. Because the change I faced as a child was actually opportunity. All the crises that I dealt with, if I was in a normal family with no adversity at all, I don’t think I would be the person I am. I wouldn’t have the resilience, the grit, you know. So that change sort of set the tone. I get to my first job, shortly after joining the company, they merge, now my career is uncertain again. Change, but another window opened. A door closed and a window opened.”
Throughout the conversation, there were several moments when I had to hold back tears, not because Jim’s story was overwhelmingly tragic, but because of the way he faces those painful experiences. He always carries a sense of humor, a lightness, and an attitude that meets life head-on. Even when he’s been completely broken by circumstances, there’s still this quiet courage and hope for tomorrow. I asked him where that kind of optimism comes from, Jim described it as “relentless positivity.” He said he first heard the phrase from a British violinist: “I grabbed onto that term because that’s carried me throughout my whole career. I never called it that, but that’s what it is.” “Here’s where it starts. It starts with every morning I wake up grateful. First thing, first thought. Did it this morning. Grateful for life. Another day. What an adventure I’m gonna have today. I can’t wait to get up”.
“The whole purpose of the book that I wrote is, literally it talks about democracy and the idea that knowledge is the antidote to fear. And if we keep in this cycle of negativity, of fear, it leads, well, ignorance leads to fear, and fear leads to anger, anger leads to hatred, hatred leads to violence. And we can see it every single day. But the antidote is knowledge. The more you learn, the less you have to fear.” From there, after joining 7-Eleven, his career continues on a steady upward path, from corporate finance into leadership, eventually reaching the CEO seat. Even at the highest level, his philosophy remains grounded in preparation over outcome. “It’s not the will to win that matters, it’s the will to prepare to win.” When asked whether, in today’s world, one should pursue their dreams or chase wealth directly, Jim was very clear: “It’s definitely never, ever about the money. The money will come. The money will follow. It’s somewhere in between.”
This is a cliché question, but from Jim, I heard what might be the best answer to date: “Chase breadth of knowledge rather than depth of knowledge, because that gives you the ability to pivot into what your dreams evolve to. Because our dreams do change, and they evolve.” Speaking of Blockbuster, Jim says he truly wishes he “had another shot at Blockbuster.”
“So here’s what we had. We had a streaming platform, we had a shot at exclusivity for the old movies, and we had a deal with Google that would’ve given us side-by-side short-form content via YouTube, all long-form content, TVs, movies, via Blockbuster, side-by-side with Google as our distribution partner. If that existed today, I think the industry would be much different, and the consumer experience would be much different. Would we have competitors? Netflix may or may not have survived in that world had we been able to finish that model. Apple would probably still be there, Amazon would still be there. But I think Blockbuster could have and would have been that one-stop shop.”
When I’m with Jim, there’s an unexpected sense of safety. It may come from how often he returns to the idea of being fearless, and the fact that he actually lives it. That absence of fear seems to extend beyond him, and it also affects everyone around him. It makes failure feel less final, and the future less threatening. As long as you’re alive, nothing feels unmanageable. One of the most moving things he says to me is about being at 40,000 feet in the air, where everyday worries begin to fall away, and the things that usually feel heavy no longer seem to hold the same weight.
“I can just barely see the curvature of the earth. I have a perspective that doesn’t look at races, borders, wars. It’s a beautiful planet with humanity that has more in common than we have differences. And that’s my mission, to be able to help people understand that we can be better, but we’ve gotta use our knowledge to get rid of that fear, stop being angry with each other, collectively solve problems, come together as one humanity. It’s all possible.”
