Beyond Familiarity, Refracting Her Own Light: Sandara Park’s New Spectrum, [REPRISM]
A familiar star shining brightly under the spotlight, or a vital anchor of a high-energy group—this is the Sandara Park the public has known for over two decades. Now in her 22nd year since debut, having connected with audiences across countless stages and frames, she unveils a new personal spectrum under her own name.
Launching alongside her new independent label, ARADNAS, the single album [rePRISM] is more than just a musical departure; it marks the beginning of a journey to bring her true identity as an artist—treasured deep within for so long—into the light, one piece at a time.
“Despite my long career, I rarely had the chance to express through music what kind of sound I truly love and what stories I wanted to tell.”
Letting go of the caution that once kept her safely inside designated roles, she is finally stepping into the musical worlds she has cherished for years: J-Rock, City Pop, and Acoustic. Much like her track "Nail," which began with the simple act of cutting her signature long nails short to play an instrument, Sandara Park’s evolution stems not from a grand statement, but from a small yet firm resolve. Willing to step away from what is comfortable to pursue what she genuinely loves, the melodies born from these quiet actions carry a resonance more honest and grounded than ever before.
Her first solo fan concert last July was a profound milestone—a journey fully helmed by Sandara Park alone, tracing her artistic evolution from her early days in the Philippines through 2NE1 to the present. The daunting weight of carrying a stage once shared by four dissolved the moment she met the eyes of her long-time fans, turning hesitation into absolute certainty. Through quiet hiatuses and new endeavors, the fans who have steadfastly believed in her remain her ultimate strength—the definitive power driving her forward without limits.
This project is no temporary experiment. It is a long-term musical endeavor crafted through deep collaboration with her songwriting team, refining her personal story and raw emotions into lyrics and melody. Rather than being defined by a single genre, she hopes to use music as a medium to leave behind an enduring record of who "Sandara Park" truly is.
Stepping out of the safety zone where she only showcased what she was comfortable doing, Sandara Park has begun to project her truth onto the world through a lens of her own creation. Refracted through the lens of [rePRISM], we look forward to the brilliant today of an artist finally shining in her own authentic colors.
Q1. Through your single album [rePRISM], what aspect of "Sandara Park beyond the familiar" did you most want to share with the public?
A: Looking back, despite my long career, I don't think I've had as many opportunities to show my musical side as people might think. While I’ve stood on countless stages and done various activities, I rarely had the chance to express through music what kind of sound I truly love and what stories I wanted to tell. I think I was a bit cautious back then, too—rather than proactively putting myself out there, I tended to stay within my given roles and focus on what I was already good at.
So, [rePRISM] isn't about creating a completely different Sandara Park from scratch. It’s about gradually unveiling the distinct colors that have always lived inside me but never had the proper space to be shown. There are genres I've loved for a long time, like J-Rock, City Pop, and Acoustic, as well as stories I’ve wanted to express since I was young. This single is just the beginning.
Q2. The track "Nail" reportedly stems from a real-life change—trimming your nails short to play band music. What core message did you focus on while writing this song?
A: It really started from a very subtle change. I used to love keeping long nails, but as I started learning instruments and immersing myself in band music, cutting them short felt natural. Yet, to me, that felt surprisingly symbolic. I realized that even things I once considered essential to "who I am" can naturally shift when I find something I truly want to pursue right now. Change doesn't always start with a grand resolution; sometimes, the smallest action can lead you to discover a new side of yourself.
I wanted "Nail" to capture that mindset—the willingness to let go of what is comfortable to move toward what you genuinely want to try.
Q3. On July 4th, you successfully held your first-ever solo fan concert in Seoul. How did it feel when you stepped onto a stage anchored entirely by your own name and faced your fans?
A: First of all... my name actually has four Korean syllables, not three! ^_^ Haha. Even while preparing, I kept thinking, "I’m really holding a solo concert under my own name." But it only truly hit me when I stepped onto the stage and saw the crowd. I was overwhelmed, and I think I was far more nervous than I anticipated. On a 2NE1 stage, the four of us feed off each other's energy, but for a solo concert, I had to command the room from start to finish. There was definitely a sense of pressure.
However, once the music started and I locked eyes with the fans, my mind at ease. I realized that even if I was standing on stage alone, I wasn't performing alone. That’s why I got so emotional throughout the show.
Q4. Your concert featured not only new tracks, but also a 2NE1 medley and songs from your Philippines era. What went into the mental and physical preparation required to carry an entire career chronicle by yourself?
A: I didn't want this show to be just a collection of songs I’ve sung in the past. I wanted the timeline of my career—from my days in the Philippines to 2NE1 and now my solo endeavors—to flow naturally as one continuous story. Because each era required a different musical color and stage energy, I held extensive rehearsals with the band. It demanded physical stamina, and I also had to learn how to pace and guide the energy of an entire concert on my own.
Revisiting those older songs with my voice today was a really special experience. Moments I had forgotten came rushing back, and singing those tracks from my current perspective gave some of them entirely new meanings. In many ways, it was a reflective journey for me as well.
Q5. You got emotional and shed tears several times during the show, calling your fans your "weapon and ultimate strength." What makes the fans who stood by you through every high and low the greatest driving force behind your fearlessness in taking on new challenges after 22 years?
A: They are the people who stayed by my side whether I was actively promoting or taking a break. To me, they feel less like traditional supporters and more like companions who have walked through time alongside me. Whenever I start something new, I worry a lot too—I wonder, "Is it okay to start now? Will people like this?" Presenting music that I personally wanted to make, like I did this time, made me even more cautious.
Yet, seeing the fans in person—those who waited for me for so long—gives me renewed courage. It instills a deep faith that even if I show a slightly different side of myself or take a new leap, there are people who will be there to watch and support me. That's why they truly are my weapon, and the strength that keeps me moving forward.
Q6. You teased upcoming vocal explorations in J-Rock, City Pop, and Acoustic music, calling this album the starting point of a long-term project. What is your ultimate musical goal as an artist?
A: My main goal is actually very simple. When I look back years from now, I want to be remembered as someone who was able to express her own story through music. I've been in the entertainment industry for 22 years and experienced so much, but I don't think I spent enough time truly expressing myself musically.
While preparing for this project, I reminded myself, "Ah, right—my original path was as a musician." I spent a long time working on this. Instead of simply receiving a track to sing, I built it together with the production team from the ground up, bringing out and refining feelings and thoughts I’ve had since I was young. What started as deeply personal and abstract ideas were gradually shaped into lyrics, melodies, and finished works for people to hear.
While there are many genres I want to explore, a specific genre isn't the ultimate goal. I want to leave behind pieces of who I am through various styles of music. My hope is that when people listen through my discography over time, they can clearly see the person that is Sandara Park within it.
Q7. You announced a fresh start with your new label, 'ARADNAS,' actively participating in songwriting, composing, and arranging. What prompted you to strike out on your own, and how has your working environment or mindset shifted?
A: Starting ARADNAS came down to the exact same motivation. Despite my long career, I rarely had the experience of building a song from an idea in my head into a complete piece of music. This time, we started from total scratch. I spent a long time discussing the direction with the production team and pulling out thoughts and messages I’d held onto since I was young. We went through the entire process together—turning things that could initially only be explained in words into lyrics, melodies, arrangements, and finally a finished work to present to the public.
It was much harder and took far longer than I expected. But through that process, for the first time, I felt a deep, genuine connection to the act of creating music. In the past, I think I held back out of self-consciousness. Now, instead of sticking only to what I know I can do well, I want to carefully craft the things I’ve truly wanted to do all along, one by one.
