70 Years of the Crown, Rewritten Through Music: The 70th Miss Korea
Miss Korea, first launched in 1957, marked its 70th edition this year. Held on August 22 at COEX Auditorium in Seoul, the 70th Miss Korea Pageant crowned Woo Seo-yoon as Jin, Oh Soo-min as Sun, and Lee Min-sol as Mi. Noh Hyang received the Ye title, while Lee So-min was named Jae.
What stood out most at this year’s 70th-anniversary event was music. The show opened with a performance by Gaon Soloists, an inclusive chamber ensemble of musicians with and without disabilities, alongside the visually impaired choir Raphael Chorus. The 26 finalists then took the stage for a performance set to Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous,” moving beyond the traditionally static image associated with beauty pageants.
The celebration continued across genres. Big Ocean, a K-pop group composed of members with hearing impairments, joined the lineup alongside Billlie, composer Kim Hyo-geun, vocalists Choi Jung-won and Kim Sung-gyeol, and children’s choir Lime Tree Friends. From classical music and choral arrangements to pop and K-pop, the program brought a broad musical spectrum to a single stage.
Music was not limited to the guest performances. Noh Hyang, who received the Ye title, majors in traditional Korean music at Seoul National University and specializes in the gayageum. Jae winner Lee So-min is a classical pianist who studied at the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover in Germany. The presence of two winners with distinctly different musical backgrounds offered another symbolic reflection of the pageant’s evolving direction.
The Ye and Jae categories, as well as the competition’s survival-style format, were not introduced for the 70th edition itself. These changes began with the 69th Miss Korea Pageant. Building upon that shift, this year’s milestone edition used its 70th anniversary to further expand the competition beyond conventional standards of physical beauty, placing greater emphasis on individual talent, expression, and identity.
A newly designed “K-Crown” also became a symbol of the anniversary. Inspired by the consonants and vowels of Hangul, Seoul’s architecture, and forms drawn from the Korean natural landscape, the crown brings together the history of Miss Korea and contemporary Korean culture.
Rather than simply recreating the glamour of its past, the 70th Miss Korea brought different generations and genres onto one stage — from orchestra and choir to Michael Jackson, K-pop, and classical music.
After 70 editions, beauty on the Miss Korea stage is no longer defined solely by what can be seen. It is also expressed through one’s own voice and talent. This year, that evolution was heard through music.
