SF Beats and Golden Gate Eats: A Culinary Excursion Through Outside Lands 2026
August 6th thru 8th
Each year, Outside Lands draws thousands of people to Golden Gate Park to not only
celebrate phenomenal art and music, but also to discover the flavors of local Bay Area
cuisine, partake in the libations of wine and beer lands, and to enjoy the culture of San
Francisco.
Over the course of the three day festival, we visited multiple vendors to immerse
ourselves in Bay Area restaurant experience. These are some of our highlights of the
food offerings of Outside Lands 2026-
Balboa Cafe (Polo Field South) -
Espressotini & Chicken Paillard Tenders
There was still a bit of the morning fog lingering upon our arrival to Golden Gate Park, so
starting the day with a bit of elevated comfort food was ideal. We made our way over to
the Balboa Cafe stand located in Polo Field South, where we ordered chicken paillard
tenders and espressotinis. Balboa Cafe has been open since 1913, and with just one bite,
it was evident that they put that time to good use to perfect their craft. The crispy exterior
of the tenders provided the most satisfying crunch and optimal ratio of breading to
chicken breast. Accompanying the tenders was a side of velvety-smooth marsala dipping
sauce, rich with the flavors of garlic and brown butter. The espressotini was wonderfully
smooth, made with single origin cold brew deep in flavor, and had just the right amount
of foam.
$20 for tenders
$21 espressotini
Reem’s (Polo Field South)
Lamb Quesabirria Flatbread Wrap
The second stop was at Reem’s (also located in Polo Field South)- which originally
opened in Beirut Lebanon, but has since brought flavors of Middle Eastern street food to
the Bay Area beginning in 2015. We savored their quesabirria-style lamb flatbread- the
slow-braised lamb was incredibly tender and juicy, and was absolutely bursting with
flavor. Pickled red onions provided a nice textural contrast along with a layer of melty
Oaxacan cheese, and was all held together by a crispy flatbread and paired with a savory
lamb consume for dipping. This was a sizable portion, both delicious and satiating.
$25 for flat bread
Piglet & Co. (Polo Field North)
Chashao Pork or Tofu Bao Bun
We wanted to keep the culinary journey in motion, but needed something a bit more
snack-size after the first two heavy hitters. We headed over to Piglet & Co at Polo Field
North to get a taste of the chashao pork bao buns. Piglet & Co specializes in reimagining
nostalgic Asian flavors to create a variety of modern dishes for their seasonal and
rotating menu. The bao itself was light and pillowy, and was filled with succulent chashaomarinated pork loaded with umami flavors, and was garnished with a crisp slaw and a
dollop of togarashi mayo. This was small bite- a perfect snack for in between sets.
$20 for 2 buns
Parachute Bakery (Lindley Meadow)
Passionfruit Cube Croissant
Parachute Bakery in Lindley Meadow proved to be the perfect location for a savory to
sweet transition. We indulged in their signature cube-shaped passionfruit vanilla
croissant. Upon first glance, the croissant appeared to have about 100 layers of
well-laminated, melt-in-your-mouth flaky pastry. Once halved, the pastry revealed a
center of luscious custard filling, flecked with vanilla bean and delicately flavored with
passion fruit.
Tasting Menu at Cocktail Magic (Lindley Meadow)
We concluded our excursion with two drinks at Cocktail Magic’s Tasting Menu bar, which
specializes in culinary-inspired cocktails. The Mex-Hamachi was a tequila based cocktail made
with yuzu and ginger syrup. The addition of soy olive drops provided a subtle savory component
to the beverage, resulting in an experience that was somehow reminiscent of both a margarita
and a fresh sushi roll.
The Banana bread carajillo blended bourbon, banana liquor, Mr. Black coffee liquor, and vanilla
to create a decadent and aromatic dessert-like cocktail, a wonderful end to an eventful day of
eating.
This year’s menu only further solidified Outside Lands success as a music, art, food, and wine
festival, placing it levels above the average festival experience. I look forward to seeing what
2026 has in store, and will return hungry and ready to enjoy new offerings while revisiting older
favorites.
