‘인생을 바꾸는 해’를 지나온 전 케이팝 아이돌 케빈 우가 배우, 프로듀서, 솔로 아티스트로 자신을 다시금 정의하며 연극적인 팝 세계에서 새로운 글로벌 관객을 구축하고 있다.

1. [RSK] 사자보이즈의 ‘미스터리’ 역은 사실 케빈의 첫 케이팝 아이돌 연기가 아니었어요. 실제 아티스트로서의 삶과 이야기 속 아이돌을 연기하는 것 사이에는 어떤 차이와 공통점이 있나요?

이 애니메이션 영화는 연기 방식이 좀 달랐어요. 제가 참여한 첫 애니메이션 작품이었고, 노래 목소리를 맡았기 때문에 제가 원래 하던 일과도 크게 다르지 않았죠. 그 자체가 큰 행운이었어요.
이언 아이젠드라스(Ian Eisendrath), 이재(EJAE) 같은 정말 뛰어난 프로듀서들과 작업했는데, 말 그대로 드림팀이었어요. 이재는 케이팝 신에서 엄청난 작곡가이고, 이언은 뮤지컬·연극계에서 큰 인물이잖아요. 두 세계가 완벽하게 섞인 조합이었죠.
저는 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 <KPOP>을 막 끝낸 직후였기 때문에, 케이팝 세계에서 쌓은 경험과 진정성을 이 작품에 자연스럽게 녹여낼 수 있었어요. 그래서 두 세계를 결합하는 게 저에겐 정말 잘 맞았죠.
 

2. [RSK] 자연스러웠다고 했지만 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>에서는 악역을 맡았고, 최근에도 빌런 캐릭터를 맡고 있어요. ‘배드 보이’를 연기하는 건 어떤가요?

실제 케이팝 활동을 하는 동안 ‘깔끔한 이미지’라는 평판이 있었기 때문에, 오히려 원래의 제가 아닌 캐릭터를 연기하는 게 정말 재밌었어요. 틀을 벗어나서 다양한 캐릭터와 성격을 실험해보는 거죠. 그냥… 즐기고 있어요.

3. [RSK] 요즘 또 어떤 아티스트들에게서 영감받고 있나요?

저는 데뷔 때부터 케이팝의 엄청난 팬이었어요. 지금도 신인 그룹들을 정말 좋아하고요. 특히 에이티즈에게서 많은 영감을 받아요. 콘서트도 직접 관람했는데, 무대 장악력과 그들이 보여주는 약간 미쳐 있는 듯한, 야성적인 에너지가 정말 인상적이었죠. 그런 부분에서 큰 자극을 받아요.
코르티스와 올데이 프로젝트도 마찬가지예요. 이 팀들은 신세대 케이팝 그룹이지만, ‘난 내 길을 갈 거야, 네가 뭐라 하든 상관없어’ 같은 태도죠. 스트레이 키즈도 그렇고요. 요즘 케이팝이 전반적으로 그런 방향으로 가고 있다고 느껴요. 저는 그런 케이팝적 감각에 ‘어떻게든 나답게 간다’는 태도를 섞어서, 미국인으로서 제 뿌리와 저만의 진정성을 함께 음악과 퍼포먼스에 담고 싶어요.
 

4. [RSK] 유키스 멤버 훈, 기섭과 함께 UX1 유닛으로 재결합했죠. 이 프로젝트를 시작하게 된 이유는 무엇인가요?

저와 멤버들은 계속 연락을 주고받아 왔어요. 멤버들은 한국과 해외에서 활동하고 있었고, 저는 여기서 배우이자 가수로 새로운 길을 시작하고 있었죠. 함께 뭔가를 한 건 8년 만이에요.
올해 제가 한국에 갔을 때 셋이 저녁을 먹으면서 ‘우리 재미있는 거 한번 해볼까?’라는 이야기가 나왔어요. 우리는 모두 91년생, 유키스의 동갑내기 라인이잖아요. 그래서 ‘레이블이 원하는 게 아니라, 우리가 진짜 하고 싶은 걸 해보자’라고 했고, 셋의 방향이 딱 맞아떨어졌죠.

UX1을 시작하기도 전에 일본에서 팬미팅을 했는데 반응이 너무 좋아서, ‘이건 해야 한다’는 확신이 들었어요. 바로 스튜디오로 들어가서 <HALO>를 녹음했고, 크리스마스 싱글 <Winterland>도 만들었죠. 굉장히 향수를 자극하면서도, 동시에 다시 데뷔하는 것 같은 신선함이 공존해요.

특히 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>를 통해 사자보이즈로 저를 알게 된 새로운 케이팝 팬들이 이제 UX1과 유키스까지 발견하고 있어서, 우리가 지금 정말 새로운 무언가를 보여주고 있다고 느껴요.
 

5. [RSK] 영화 <K-Pops!>가 극장 개봉을 앞두고 있어요. <케이팝 데몬 헌터스> 시작 당시 특별할 것이라 확신했었는데, 이 작품은 어떤가요?

<K-Pops!>는 영화계와 음악계 모두에서 화제가 되고 있어요. 그래미 수상자인 앤더슨 팩이 연출하고, 본인과 실제 아들인 소울 라시드가 함께 출연하니까요. <케이팝 데몬 헌터스> 이후로 세상은 더 많은 케이팝을 원하고 있고, 이 영화는 그 흐름을 자연스럽게 이어갈 작품이에요.
저는 이 작품이 또 하나의 파도를 만들어낼 거라고 느껴요. 게다가 이번에는 극장에서 개봉하죠. 정말 따뜻한 영화예요. 가족, 사랑, 커리어에 대한 열정, 그리고 이를 연애와 가정에선 어떻게 균형 잡는지에 대한 이야기이기도 하고요. 케이팝을 좋아하는 젊은 관객뿐 아니라 부모, 조부모 세대까지 모두 공감할 수 있는, 진짜 가족 영화가 될 거라고 생각해요.
 

6. [RSK] 백스트리트 보이즈, 엔싱크(NSYNC), 스파이스 걸스 세대 음악을 들으며 자랐고, 랜스 배스(Lance Bass), JC 샤세즈(JC Chazes), 닉 카터(Nick Carter)와도 협업하고 만났죠. 이제 그들을 ‘동료’라 부르는 건 어떤 기분인가요?

정말 비현실적이에요. 솔직히 아직도 ‘누가 나 좀 꼬집어줘’라고 말하고 싶을 정도예요. 제 안의 어린아이는 그들 옆에 있을 때마다 소리를 지르거든요.
랜스 배스는 제가 LA로 이사 온 이후 제 여정을 정말 많이 응원해줬어요. 제가 자라면서 우상으로 삼았던 사람들이, 이제는 케이팝 세계에서 제가 걸어온 길을 존중해준다는 게… 세대와 문화가 섞이는 느낌이에요. 음악은 모든 걸 초월하잖아요.
지금 이 자리에 있다는 게 너무 감사하고, 아직도 꿈꾸는 기분이에요.

After a "life-changing" 2025, the former K-pop idol has remade himself as an actor, producer and solo artist building theatrical pop worlds and a new international audience.

1. [RSK] Your role as Saja Boys' Mystery Saja wasn't actually your first time playing a K-pop idol. What are the differences and similarities between your real-life artist life and playing one for a story?

I feel like with this animated film, it was a different approach to acting. It was my first-ever animated film that I was a part of and I contributed my singing voice so it wasn't too far off from what I normally do, which is a huge blessing.

Working with really huge and talented producers like Ian Eisendrath and EJAE, I was working with the dream team — I don't know what else to say! They really knew the world of K-pop, especially EJAE since she's such a big writer in that world. And Ian being so big in the theater world, it was a perfect blend of both.

I feel like for me it came so naturally because I just came off of the Broadway show, KPOP, and then bringing my experience and authenticity from my K-pop world and blending the two worlds together was the perfect match.

2. [RSK] You say it was natural for you, but you played the villain in KPop Demon Hunters and have had a couple of villainous roles lately. How is it embracing the bad boy?

Because of my real-life experience in K-pop and having a certain reputation of being very quote-unquote "clean," it was really fun to just play something that I am naturally not; going out of the box to just really kinda experiment with different characters, personalities and yeah, just, just having fun with it.

3 . [RSK] Who else did you look to for inspiration these days?

I've been a huge fan of K-pop since Day 1. I still am a huge fan of all the newer rookie groups and I feel like I get a lot of inspo from ATEEZ. I was at the ATEEZ concert and their stage presence, and   just kind of how they're so unhinged and have this wild side to them — it's something that I take a lot of inspiration from. I feel like with CORITS and ALLDAY PROJECT too, these are the newer groups in K-pop, but they have this kind of "Whatever, I'm gonna do me, I don't care what you think" vibe to them. Also, Stray Kids as well.
 

4. [RSK] How was it to reunite with your U-KISS members, Hoon and Kiseop, for your UX1 sub-unit? What is it about those guys that made you want to start this new project?

With me and my members, we've always kept in touch. They've been doing their thing in Korea and all over, 've been starting my journey as an actor and and singer out here. So it's been a while — I would say it's been eight years since we did something together — but something about this year, when we were all together for dinner when I was visiting Korea, we were just saying, "What if we did something fun?" 

We're all the same age, we're the '91 liners of U-KISS and we're like, you know what if we made a sub-unit and did something that we wanted to do — without what the label wanted us to do. And we all aligned and the chemistry clicked.

We did a fanmeeting in Japan first before we even started UX1 and it was so well received. So, we're like, "Okay, we gotta do something, we gotta release music," and we went straight into the studio. We recorded “HALO” and then our Christmas single “Winterland.” I feel like it's very nostalgic, but also it feels like we are re-debuting in a sense — it sounds very fresh.

I feel like with the newer audience to K-pop, and especially through KPop Demon Hunters as well who discovered me through Saja Boys and then are now discovering UX1 and U-KISS, that we're bringing something fresh to the table. 

5. [RSK] K-POPS! will be released in theaters in February. You told us you knew KPop Demon Hunters "was going to be special." Tell us about K-POPS!

K-POPS! has been quite the buzz in the film industry and also music industry because, obviously, it's directed by the Grammy Award-winning Anderson .Paak, but also starring him and his real-life son, Soul Rasheed. I feel like the world is craving for more K-pop, especially after KPop Demon Hunters and this movie just following suit.  

I feel like this momentum is gonna create another wave — I have a really good feeling about this movie, and the good thing about this one is it's gonna hit theaters; it's just such a heartfelt movie. It's a lot about family, about love and passion for your career, but also juggling that with your love life, and family.  I feel like it's gonna reach a lot of different age demographics, for sure, because it's gonna reel in the younger crowd who love K-pop, but also parents, grandparents. I feel like this is definitely a family-oriented movie. 

6. [RSK] I know you grew up loving the music of the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and Spice Girls era, and we've seen you collaborate and meet with Lance Bass, JC Chazes, Nick Carter. What does it mean to call those guys peers?

So surreal. Honestly, I still wanna say like, "Please pinch me" because my  inner child is always screaming when I'm around them. Lance Bass has just been so supportive of my journey since I moved to LA and it's really a very unbelievable situation I'm in right now to have these idols that I grew up with and then for them to respect where I come from in the world of K-pop — it's just a blend of generations and cultures. Music transcends all of that. So, I feel so blessed to be where I'm at right now and I just think it's a dream still.
