역사적인 롤라팔루자 공연 이후 “P-Pop의 세계 정복을 원한다”는 SB19

유명한 롤라팔루자 페스티벌의 첫날, 전설적인 보이그룹 SB19은 자신들뿐만 아니라 필리핀 전체를 위해 새로운 역사를 썼습니다. 멤버 저스틴(JUSTIN), 켄(KEN), 조쉬(JOSH), 파블로(PABLO), 스텔(STELL)은 ALLIANZ 무대에 올라 신곡 “LAWLESS”를 처음 선보이며 1시간 동안 폭발적인 무대를 꾸몄고, 행사 라이브 스트리밍의 동시 시청자 수는 50만 명을 넘어섰습니다. 불과 1시간 후, 롤링스톤 코리아는 아티스트 대기 구역에서 SB19과 만나 그들의 엄청난 롤라팔루자 데뷔 무대에 대한 이야기를 나누었습니다.

[RSK] 안녕하세요 SB19! 롤라팔루자에서의 멋진 무대 직후 이렇게 함께하게 되어 영광입니다. 각 멤버의 짧은 자기소개로 시작해 볼까요?
JUSTIN: 안녕하세요! 제 이름은 저스틴이고, 포켓몬을 정말 좋아합니다!

KEN: 안녕하세요, 제 이름은 켄입니다. 제 소소한 사실 하나는 주로 손빨래를 한다는 점이에요.

JOSH: 안녕하세요, 저는 조쉬입니다. 사실 저는 요즘 바이브 코딩을 많이 하고 있습니다.

PABLO: 반갑습니다! 파블로입니다. 저는 오토바이 타는 걸 좋아하는데, 쉬지 않고 가장 멀리 가본 게 6시간이에요!

STELL: 모두 안녕하세요! 저는 스텔입니다. 저에 대한 재미있는 사실은 임의의 온갖 효과음을 낼 수 있다는 것입니다.

[RSK] 최신 스튜디오 앨범인 는 EP 3부작인 , <Pagtatag!>, 의 마침표를 찍으며 그룹의 한 시대를 마무리했습니다. 다음으로 음악을 어떤 방향으로 끌어가고 싶으신가요?
PABLO: 저희는 사람들의 기대를 깨고 이전에는 해보지 않은 콘셉트에 도전할 의향이 있습니다. 다음 시대는 확실히 저희에게도, 팬분들에게도 대단히 흥미진진할 것입니다.

[RSK] 그룹 활동 외에도 지난 3개월 동안 켄, 저스틴, 파블로가 모두 솔로 곡을 발표했는데요! 다음 타자는 누구일지 힌트를 주실 수 있나요?
PABLO: 스포 금지야, 얘들아!
JUSTIN: 그냥 기다려주셔야 할 것 같아요! 일정한 패턴이 있거든요. 저희 모두 각자 하고 싶었던 것을 하고 개인적인 창의성을 표현하는 데 있어서 아주 잘해오고 있습니다.

[RSK] 롤라팔루자 공연 당일, 따끈따끈한 신곡 "LAWLESS"가 발매되었습니다! 관객들에게 처음으로 이 곡을 선보인 기분은 어땠나요?
JUSTIN: 물론 저희를 잘 모르는 수많은 인파로 가득 찬 대형 무대에 서는 것 자체만으로도 이미 꽤 긴장되는 일입니다. 게다가 한 번도 무대에서 선보인 적 없는 곡이었으니까요! 연습도 정말 많이 하고 열심히 준비했습니다. 하지만 또 한 번 데뷔하는 것 같은 느낌이 들어서 정말 놀라운 경험이었습니다.

[RSK] SB19은 롤라팔루자의 35년 역사상 최초로 무대에 선 필리핀 아티스트입니다. 데뷔 초부터 개척자의 길을 걸어오셨지만, 세계 최대 페스티벌 중 하나에서 P-Pop을 대표하게 된 소감은 어떤가요?
JOSH: 이런 기회를 얻게 되어 정말 감사하게 생각합니다. 사실 저희는 평생 이 순간을 기다려왔습니다. 바로 그 순간에 모든 것이 비로소 납득이 되는 기분이었습니다. 데뷔 초에는 더 큰 무대에서 공연하는 것을 꿈꿨었습니다. 하지만 지금 그 일이 일어나고 있고, 저희는 이것이 단지 시작일 뿐이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이 시점을 시작으로 P-Pop이 세계를 정복하길 원합니다!

[RSK] 요즘 정말 바쁜 나날을 보내고 계신데요. 불과 이틀 전에는 그래미 뮤지엄에서 특별 무대를 선보이기도 했죠! 관객과 가까이 호흡하는 소규모 공연과 대형 스타디움이나 페스티벌 무대를 준비하는 것은 어떻게 다른가요?
KEN: 저희는 저희가 하는 모든 공연을 평등하게 바라본다고 생각합니다. SB19으로 처음 시작했을 때 가졌던 공동의 비전과 목표를 유지하고 있는 한, 규모가 얼마나 크거나 작은지는 크게 신경 쓰지 않으며, 그 점이 저희에게 가장 중요합니다. 아티스트로서 성장에 따라 준비 방식은 수년간 변해왔지만, 본질적으로 저희는 언제나 우리 자신이 누구인지, 그리고 무엇이 우리를 강하게 만드는지에 집중합니다.

[RSK] 페스티벌 이야기가 나와서 말인데, 오는 10월 텍사스주 샌안토니오에서 열리는 KPOPWORLD Festival & Worldwide Dance Competition의 헤드라이너로 서게 되셨습니다! SB19이 처음 시작했을 때, 트레이닝 과정은 K-Pop 시스템에서 영감을 받은 것으로 알려져 있는데요. 이것이 지금의 아티스트로 성장하는 데 어떤 영향을 주었다고 생각하시나요?
STELL: 사실 그것은 흔히 일어나는 오해입니다. 저희가 시작했을 때 반드시 따라야 하는 특정 시스템 같은 것은 없었습니다. K-Pop이 영향을 준 것은 분명하지만, 저희는 현재의 P-Pop이 만들어지던 초창기에도 함께 있었습니다. 저희에게는 스스로의 설계도를 만들고 춤이든, 노래든, 공연이든 배워가며 여러 발전 단계를 거쳐야 했습니다. 아티스트로서 성숙하고 발전하면서 저희만의 시스템을 구축할 수 있었고, 이는 저희가 강조하고 싶은 매우 중요한 부분입니다. 처음부터 모든 것을 알지 못했기 때문에 스스로 창조하고 혁신해야 했던 점이 오늘날 아티스트로서의 저희를 형성했습니다.

[RSK] SB19은 최근 필리핀의 새로운 관광 홍보대사로 위촉되었습니다! 최근 몇 년간 이 타이틀을 얻은 P-Pop 그룹은 SB19과 비니(BINI)뿐인데요. 음악이 문화를 알리는 좋은 수단이라고 믿는 이유는 무엇인가요?
PABLO: 사용하는 언어와 상관없이, 음악은 사람들에게 무언가를 느끼게 하는 힘이 있습니다. 그리고 세계 각지에서 온 사람들과 한데 모일 수 있는 롤라팔루자 같은 페스티벌에서는 특별한 에너제틱함과 소속감이 느껴집니다.

SB19 “Want P-Pop World Domination” Following Historic Lollapalooza Performance

On the first day of the famous Lollapalooza festival, the legendary boy band SB19 not only made history for themselves, but the entire Philippines. Members JUSTIN, KEN, JOSH, PABLO, and STELL took to the ALLIANZ stage for an explosive hour-long set, debuting their new song “LAWLESS” and drawing in more than 500,000 concurrent viewers on the event livestream. Barely an hour later, Rolling Stone Korea sat down with SB19 in the artist compound to discuss the band’s massive Lolla debut.

[RSK] Hello SB19! We are honored to be here with you just after your amazing set at Lollapalooza. Can we start things off with a short self introduction from each member?

JUSTIN: Hi! My name is JUSTIN, and I love Pokémon! 

KEN: Hello, my name is KEN. My fun fact is that I mostly wash my clothes by hand.

JOSH: Hi, I'm JOSH. And I have actually been doing a lot of vibe coding lately. 

PABLO: What's up? This is PABLO. I like riding motorcycles, and the farthest I’ve gone without stopping is six hours!

STELL: Hi everyone! I'm STELL. And a fun fact about me is that I can make a bunch of random sound effects.

[RSK] Your latest studio album, Wakas at Simula, marked the end of an era for the group by serving as the conclusion to the EP trilogy of Pagsibol, Pagtatag!, and Simula at Wakas. What direction do you hope to take your music next?

PABLO: We're willing to go against the expectations of people and try concepts that we haven't done before. This next era is definitely going to be exciting for us and the fans as well. 

[RSK] Aside from group releases, Ken, Justin, and Pablo have all come out with solo music over the past three months! Can you give us a hint as to who might be next?

PABLO: No revealing, guys!

JUSTIN: I guess you all just need to wait for it! There's a pattern. And we've all been doing well in terms of what we have wanted to do individually and expressing our own creativity.

[RSK] Your brand new track, “LAWLESS” just dropped - the same day as your Lollapalooza performance! What was it like to present the song to an audience for the first time?

JUSTIN: Of course, it’s already quite nerve-wracking to get on stage in front of a huge crowd with a lot of people who don't know about us. And on top of that, it’s a song that we've never performed before! It took us a lot of practice and we worked hard for it. But the experience was really amazing because it felt like another debut.

[RSK] SB19 is the first Filipino act to perform in Lollapalooza’s 35-year run. While you have been trailblazers since the start of your career, how does it feel to be a representative for P-Pop at one of the biggest festivals in the world?

JOSH: We're very grateful for this opportunity. In fact, we've been waiting for this our entire lives. It feels like everything all made sense right at that moment. Back when we were just starting out, we dreamed of performing on bigger stages. But right now it's happening, and we know that this is just the beginning. We want P-Pop world domination starting from this point!

[RSK] You all have been super busy lately - just two days ago you made a special appearance at the Grammy Museum! In what ways is preparing for a smaller, intimate performance different from large stadium concerts or festival sets? 

KEN: I think for us, we see all the performances that we do equally. We don’t really look at how big or small the scale is, as long as we still have that shared vision and goal that we had when we started as SB19, and that’s what’s most important to us. The way we prepare has changed throughout the years depending on our growth as artists, but at our core, we always stick to who we are and what makes us strong.

On the topic of festivals - you guys will be headlining the KPOPWORLD Festival & Worldwide Dance Competition in San Antonio Texas this October! When SB19 first started out, your training process was inspired by the K-Pop system. How do you think that affected your development into becoming the artists you are today?

STELL: Actually, that’s a common misconception. When we started, there wasn’t really a specific system that we had to follow. K-pop was definitely an influence, but we were also in the early days of developing what P-pop is today. For us, we had to create our own blueprint and go through the different stages of development as we learned, whether that was dancing, singing, or performing. As we matured and developed as artists, we were able to create our own system, and that’s something that’s very important for us to highlight. Not knowing everything at the beginning and having to create and innovate on our own really shaped who we are as artists today.

[RSK] SB19 was recently named the Philippines’ newest tourism ambassadors! In recent years, both you and BINI are the only P-Pop groups to receive this title. Why do you believe that music is a good way to share culture?

PABLO: Regardless of the language that you use, music has a way of making people feel something. And at a festival like Lollapalooza, where you can gather together with others from all different parts of the world, there’s a special kind of energy and sense of belonging. 

[RSK] Finally, now that the interview is coming to a close, is there anything else you would like to share with Rolling Stone Korea readers?
