어린이 만화 ‘뚱딴지’로 오랜 시간 사랑받아 온 원로 만화가 김우영 작가가 향년 87세로 별세했다.
지난 8일 한국만화영상진흥원 등에 따르면 김우영 작가는 지난 9월 24일 세상을 떠났으며, 별세 소식은 뒤늦게 알려졌다.
1939년 평안북도에서 태어난 고인은 1956년 만화 ‘물레방아’로 데뷔하며 만화계에 첫발을 내디뎠다. 이후 ‘황금박쥐’ 등 애니메이션 제작에도 참여하며 출판 만화와 영상 분야를 넘나드는 활동을 이어갔다.
고인의 대표작 ‘뚱딴지’는 1990년부터 2019년까지 약 30년간 소년조선일보(현 어린이조선일보)에 연재된 네 컷 만화다. 총 8,556회에 걸쳐 연재되며 장난기 넘치는 주인공 뚱딴지의 일상과 어린이들의 순수한 시선을 유쾌하게 그려냈다.
특히 일상에서 벌어지는 소소한 사건과 재치 있는 표현으로 어린이뿐 아니라 다양한 연령층의 독자들에게 사랑받았다. 작품의 인기에 힘입어 ‘뚱딴지 만화일기’, ‘뚱딴지 명심보감’, ‘뚱딴지 독도탐방대’ 등 여러 단행본으로도 출간됐다.
고인은 오랜 창작 활동을 통해 한국 어린이 만화의 발전에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 2004년 제4회 고바우 만화상과 2009년 제25회 색동회 눈솔상을 수상했다. 2019년 건강상의 이유로 ‘뚱딴지’ 연재를 중단했으나, 이후 다시 작품 활동에 나서며 만화에 대한 열정을 이어가기도 했다.
약 70년간 한국 만화계에 몸담으며 독자들과 소통해 온 김우영 작가. 그의 대표작 ‘뚱딴지’는 1990년대와 2000년대 어린 시절을 보낸 세대의 추억 속에 남아 있다.

Kim Woo-young, Creator of ‘Ttungttanji,’ Passes Away at 87
Veteran South Korean cartoonist Kim Woo-young, best known for his beloved children’s comic strip “Ttungttanji,” has passed away at the age of 87.
According to the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency and other sources on October 8, Kim died on September 24, with news of his passing becoming public several weeks later.
Born in North Pyongan Province in 1939, Kim began his career in 1956 with the comic “Waterwheel.” He later expanded his work into animation, contributing to productions such as “Golden Bat” while continuing his career in print comics.
His most celebrated work, “Ttungttanji,” was a four-panel comic strip serialized in the children’s newspaper Sonyeon Chosun Ilbo (now Eorini Chosun Ilbo) for nearly 30 years, from 1990 to 2019. Running for a total of 8,556 installments, the series followed the everyday adventures of its mischievous young protagonist, capturing childhood experiences through humor and relatable stories.
Known for its lighthearted portrayal of everyday life and witty storytelling, the series gained popularity among readers of all ages. Its success also led to several book publications, including “Ttungttanji Comic Diary,” “Ttungttanji Myeongsimbogam,” and “Ttungttanji Dokdo Exploration Team.”
In recognition of his contributions to Korean children’s comics, Kim received the fourth Gobau Cartoon Award in 2004 and the 25th Saekdonghoe Nunsol Award in 2009. Although he suspended the serialization of “Ttungttanji” in 2019 due to health concerns, he later resumed creative activities, continuing his dedication to cartooning.
Throughout a career spanning nearly seven decades, Kim Woo-young played a significant role in Korean comics. His signature work, “Ttungttanji,” remains a cherished part of childhood memories for generations who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s.
