글로벌 K-POP 그룹 몬스타엑스가 여섯 곡이 담긴 새 미니앨범 [THE X]로 돌아왔다. 로마 숫자 ‘X’(10)을 형상화한 이번 앨범은 함께한 10년을 기념함과 동시에, 앞으로 펼쳐질 잠재력을 보여준다.

첫 트랙은 지난 8월 18일 선공개된 싱글 <Do What I Want>다. 그루비한 베이스와 리드미컬한 드럼 위에 멤버들의 개성 있는 보컬이 더해져 몰입감을 만들고, 뮤직비디오의 강렬한 비주얼이 이를 배가한다. 오랫동안 남성적인 매력과 성숙한 분위기로 인해 ‘짐승돌’이라 불리며 강렬한 매력을 쌓아온 몬스타엑스는 뿔, 날개, 군 복무 이후의 체형을 강조하는 의상으로 콘셉트를 더욱 선명하게 풀어냈다. 홈비디오 감각의 영상은 90년대 미국 힙합을 떠올리게 하며, 오랜 경험에서 나오는 여유를 드러낸다.

두 번째 트랙이자 타이틀곡인 <N the Front>는 속도감과 에너지가 넘치는 곡이다. <Rush Hour>, <FANTASIA>를 잇는 강렬한 기세 속에서 몬스타엑스는 “뒤로 물러서지 않고 전진한다”는 메시지처럼 앞으로의 행보를 선언한다. 보컬과 랩이 유기적으로 맞물리며 긴장감을 높이고, 라이브 무대에서 더욱 빛을 발할 곡으로 기대를 모은다.

<Savior>는 몬스타엑스의 색깔을 가장 잘 보여주는 몽환적이고 감각적인 트랙이다. 기현, 셔누, 민혁, 형원이 각자의 보컬을 충분히 드러내며 조화를 이루었다.

<Tuscan Leather>는 주헌과 아이엠의 합이 돋보이는 곡이다. 대담한 가사와 과감한 비트가 어우러져 몬스타엑스 특유의 카리스마가 살아난다.

다섯 번째 트랙 <Catch Me Now>는 부드럽고 유려하게 흐르는 곡으로, 미국 팝록 밴드인 Maroon 5를 떠올리게 한다. 노래는 차분하게 시작하여 점차 뜨겁게 고조되며 자연스럽게 중독시키는 비트를 담는다.

앨범은 하우스와 R&B에서 영감을 받은 곡인 <Fire & Ice>로 마무리된다. 몬스타엑스 음악 제작에는 주헌과 아이엠이 가장 활발히 활동 중이지만, 이 곡은 형원이 직접 작사·작곡·편곡을 맡아 완성했다. 그룹의 영어 앨범 [All About Luv]를 좋아했던 이들이라면, <Fire & Ice>는 취향에 잘 맞을 것이다. 

데뷔 10년 차를 맞은 몬스타엑스는 [THE X]를 통해 업계에서 여전히 굳건한 자신들의 힘을 보여준다. 데뷔 초부터 지금까지 이어온 일관된 퀄리티는 이번 앨범에서도 확인된다. 트랙이 재생되는 순간, “이건 확실히 몬스타엑스다.”라는 것을 분명히 알 수 있다.

MONSTA X Remain a Dominant Force in K-Pop With New Mini Album "THE X"

Global K-Pop powerhouse MONSTA X is back for more. Standing firm in their identity, their latest six-track mini album "THE X"represents a force of untapped potential while also embodying the Roman numeral ‘X’(10), celebrating their tenth year together.

The album kicks off with the pre-release single “Do What I Want,” which dropped last month on August 18. The groovy basslines and rhythmic drums combined with the distinct vocal colors of each member create a hypnotizing effect, which is only enhanced by the eye-catching visuals of the music video. MONSTA X, who have long been referred to as “beast idols” for their masculine charm and mature vibe, lean deeply into this concept with literal horns, wings, and attire that definitely show off their post-military physiques. The ‘home video’ aesthetic is nostalgic for fans of U.S. ‘90s hip hop and also a style that would be difficult for groups not quite as seasoned to pull off, especially considering the modern era of idols that only seem to be getting younger. 

The second and main track of "THE X"is the brand new “N the Front.” Similar to previous focus tracks like “Rush Hour” and “FANTASIA,” this song is fast-paced, high-energy, and anthemic. 10 years into their careers, MONSTA X make it clear that they intend to continue forging their own path in the industry by “fac(ing) forward without retreat” and rise even higher than the position they have already built themselves up to. The vibrant instrumental track and seamless transitions between the vocal and rap parts bounce off each other like a professional game of tennis, increasing the momentum with each phrase. One can definitely be certain that “N the Front” will shine even more as a live performance. 

“Savior” is a spacey, sensual piece, a type of sound that fits right into MONSTA X’s wheelhouse. As a more vocal-heavy track, members KIHYUN, SHOWNU, MINHYUK, and HYUNGWON each had ample opportunities to showcase their individual sounds, which all come together to create a very cohesive final result.

“Tuscan Leather,” on the other hand, is an incredible display of the synergy between the group’s two rappers, JOOHONEY and I.M. The brazen lyrics and rambunctious beat are stylish and fresh, with MONSTA X’s natural swagger really shining through. 

The fifth track, “Catch Me Now,” is a flirty, smooth-coasting ride reminiscent of tracks from the American pop-rock band Maroon 5. The song builds from a gentle start into a more passionate crescendo, with a beat naturally addicting to the ear. 

The album concludes with “Fire & Ice,” a house and R&B-inspired track. While JOOHONEY and I.M. are most prolific on the production side of MONSTA X’s music, this song was masterfully written, composed, and arranged by member HYUNGWON. For those who enjoyed the group’s English album All About Luv, it’s very likely that “Fire & Ice” would be perfectly suited to their taste.

As one of the few longstanding third generation icons, MONSTA X proves with "THE X"that they are still a dominant force in the industry today. It would not be an exaggeration to say the group has one of the most consistently solid discographies from their debut until now, never once wavering in terms of quality. With each and every track on this album, it is clear as soon as it starts that “this is definitely MONSTA X.”
