유학 시절 불렀던 빌리 조엘(Billy Joel)의 〈Just the Way You Are〉가 제 인생을 바꾸었듯이, 배리 매닐로우의 오마주가 또 제 인생을 바꾼 거더라고요.
〈Fly Away, Emily〉

Kim Kwang Jin: The Years Pass, but the Songs Remain
“Oh, there were fans who had been waiting for me all along.”
For singer-songwriter Kim Kwang Jin, returning to the stage after nearly two decades away was not the result of some grand plan or life-changing decision. It began with something far simpler: the voices of people who had never stopped waiting for him.
From “Magic Castle,” the beloved hit by his 1990s band The Classic, to “The Letter,” “Girl from Tokyo,” and “Fox,” Kim’s music has remained part of listeners’ lives long after its original release. Songs that once defined an era have found new life through younger artists, reaching a generation that may be discovering his melodies for the very first time.
On November 11, Kim will release FLY AWAY, a two-track mini-album featuring his first new songs in nine years. The record brings together two contrasting sounds: the energetic rock track “Fly Away, Emily” and the comforting ballad “Haetbyeot” (“Sunshine”). Together, they reflect where Kim finds himself today, once again making music with the stage and his audience in mind.
In a written interview with Rolling Stone Korea, Kim reflects on the unexpected moment that brought him back to performing, the lessons he learned while navigating careers in music and finance, and the creative possibilities he has yet to explore.
01. Kim Kwang Jin, Reintroduced
Q. To begin, could you introduce yourself to Rolling Stone Korea readers?
“Hello, Rolling Stone Korea readers. I’m Kim Kwang Jin. I was active in the 1990s as a member of the band The Classic, and since 2023, I’ve been actively making music again. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
02. Finding His Way Back to the Stage
Kim returned to performing in 2023, following nearly two decades of relative inactivity. What began as a simple invitation to perform would eventually reconnect him with an audience he hadn’t realized was still waiting.
Q. After such a long hiatus, what brought you back to the stage?
“For almost 20 years, I wasn’t really active. There was a long period when I simply wasn’t interested, no matter what anyone suggested.
Then, around 2023, I received a call from producer Kim Hyung Joon at CBS, asking if I’d like to do a show. I said, ‘I’m in,’ right on the spot. I guess, at that moment, I simply wanted to do it.”
03. The People Who Never Stopped Waiting
That first return to the stage left Kim with a memory he would never forget. In a small theater in Seoul’s Daehangno district, he discovered that his music had remained close to people’s hearts, even during the years he had been away.
Q. Since your return, what moment has stayed with you the most?
“It was a small theater in Daehangno, a very warm, intimate space where I felt close to the audience.
After the show, I was signing autographs when a young male student, who had just received his autograph, sat down at a nearby piano and started playing ‘The Letter.’ Then all the fans waiting in line began singing along.
I was deeply moved. I could hardly believe what was happening. ‘Oh, there were fans who had been waiting for me all along.’ That was the moment I realized it.”
Q. Your performance videos have also introduced your music to a wider audience. One particularly memorable performance brought together footage from an earlier television appearance and your present-day performance. What inspired that idea?
“I continued performing and even held encore shows, but performing outside Seoul was still difficult. I realized I wouldn’t have unlimited time to keep singing, so I thought it would be a good idea to upload videos of my performances to YouTube.
In 2011, I went to see Barry Manilow perform in Los Angeles. During the concert, he played footage of himself from the 1970s, sitting at a piano and singing ‘Mandy’ on television. Then, as the second verse began, he appeared onstage and continued the song with his band.
I was incredibly moved. You could really feel the weight of all those years.
I wanted to try something similar at a concert in Busan. We played footage from the first episode of Lee Sora’s Propose in 1995, showing me singing ‘Just Like the First Time’ with Lee Sora. Then I appeared onstage during the chorus and continued the song with the band.
We uploaded that performance to YouTube, and it went on to reach around 9.4 million views. It played a major role in introducing my music to people again.
Just as singing Billy Joel’s ‘Just the Way You Are’ during my time studying abroad changed my life, paying homage to Barry Manilow ended up changing my life once again.
Now I’m wondering what I should do with Elton John next. Haha.”
04. Two Worlds: Music and Finance
Kim’s career has never followed a conventional path. Alongside his work as a singer-songwriter, he built a career in finance, working as a fund manager and analyst. Moving between these seemingly unrelated fields gave him a perspective on creativity, discipline, and the importance of staying motivated.
Q. Moving between two very different worlds, music and finance, what have you learned?
“During The Classic years, I was working at a financial firm while making music at the same time. I was incredibly busy, but I spent a lot of my weekends working on music and managed to release three albums.
Maybe it was possible because I was young, or maybe I just had so many things I wanted to do.
Later, I left my job to focus on music, but my musical activities weren’t particularly active, even through the release of my Solvage album. Eventually, I returned to work and spent more than a decade concentrating on finance.
I missed music, but there was also a period when the songs just wouldn’t come.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from moving between those two careers, it’s that your mindset matters most, whatever the circumstances.
For me, the important thing was finding a way to keep encouraging myself to write songs, to keep that desire alive.”
05. Melodies That Cross Generations
Songs such as “Magic Castle,” “The Letter,” and “Girl from Tokyo” have continued to resonate across generations, often finding new audiences through covers and reinterpretations by younger musicians. Kim has also contributed compositions to albums by artists including Han Dong Joon, Lee Sora, Lee Seung Hwan, Sung Si Kyung, IU, and Park Hyo Shin. For him, hearing his music through someone else’s voice is both a source of joy and an opportunity to learn.
Q. Your songs have remained beloved for decades. What do you think allows music to stand the test of time?
“Once we’ve finished making a song, what happens afterward is really out of our hands, so I honestly don’t know.
Having people love your music is an incredibly happy thing, and something I’m very grateful for. I think the fact that so many younger artists have covered and remade my songs has helped keep them in people’s memories.”
Q. How does it feel to hear younger artists reinterpret your music?
“It means a lot when younger musicians remake my songs.
They each have their own sensibilities and voices, and hearing them express something different from what I originally felt is incredibly rewarding. It makes me happy, and I learn a lot from it, too.
At this point in my career, connecting with younger artists and encouraging them is also very meaningful to me.
I enjoy taking on challenges involving songs by younger musicians. Trying music from different genres is exciting, and it’s a challenge for me as well.”
Q. You’ve also been connecting with younger audiences through festivals and other performances. Have you noticed a change in how people discover and engage with music?
“In the past, records and television were really the only ways we could reach fans.
These days, there are so many different platforms that allow us to communicate with people. It’s easier to feel closer to fans and to connect with others who share similar musical tastes.
I don’t think returning to music would have been easy in the past. I might never have known that people were still cheering me on.
I feel very fortunate. It’s also wonderful to be able to reach younger music fans who may not have known me before, especially through festivals.”
06. After Nine Years, a New Chapter
On November 11, Kim Kwang Jin returns with FLY AWAY, a two-track mini-album featuring his first new songs in nine years. Bringing together the upbeat rock sound of “Fly Away, Emily” and the comforting ballad “Haetbyeot” (“Sunshine”), the release explores two distinct sides of his musical identity.
The title track, “Fly Away, Emily,” pairs an infectious rock rhythm with Kim’s signature melodic sensibility. Singer-songwriter Cho Kyu Chan contributes backing vocals, while Park Yong Joon, Kim’s longtime musical collaborator since their days in The Classic, handles the arrangement. Mixing by sound engineer Noh Yang Soo brings clarity to the individual instruments while allowing Kim’s vocals to shine.
In contrast, “Haetbyeot” offers a gentler expression of comfort for those going through difficult times. Kim’s understated, heartfelt vocals are complemented by Park Yong Joon’s delicate arrangement and instrumental performance, giving the song a quiet emotional resonance.
One track offers renewed energy; the other extends a reassuring hand. Together, they showcase Kim’s ability to move between genres while keeping melody at the heart of his music, offering a glimpse of the artistic direction he hopes to pursue as he returns to the stage.
Q. What kind of music can listeners expect from FLY AWAY, your first release in about nine years?
“On November 11, I’ll be releasing FLY AWAY, a mini-album featuring two new songs. I’m grateful to all the fans who have waited so long.
The title track, ‘Fly Away, Emily,’ is a rock song that I hope will give younger listeners a fresh burst of energy. I’m looking forward to bringing its sound to the stage.
The second track, ‘Haetbyeot’ (‘Sunshine’), is a ballad about reaching out to people who are feeling down or going through difficult times. It’s about offering comfort and finding the strength to move forward together.
The two songs have very different sounds.”
Q. What inspired you to start writing new music again after such a long time?
“Once I started performing regularly and appearing on different stages, I found myself wanting to sing more rhythmic songs.
I began thinking about the kind of music I wanted to perform live, and that naturally made me want to write again.
I wanted to create something a little different from my existing repertoire.”
Q. You’ve been making music since your days with The Classic. How has your approach to songwriting and production evolved over the years?
“I still work on arrangements with Park Yong Joon, my fellow member of The Classic. In that sense, our approach is quite similar to what it was back then.
I still prefer real instruments over virtual ones, building the sound around live performances on instruments such as drums and bass. I also continue to compose my songs on my own.
Of course, the technology involved in recording, mixing, and editing on computers has become much more convenient.”
07. The Music Still to Come
On December 5 at 6 p.m., Kim will take the stage at KBS Arena in Seoul for his solo concert, FLY AWAY. Having rediscovered the joy of performing, he is now looking beyond his familiar repertoire toward new sounds and creative possibilities.
Q. Your solo concert, FLY AWAY, is coming up on December 5. What kind of experience do you hope to share with the audience?
“I want people who come to the concert to experience my musical imagination and the different genres I’ve explored.
I hope they leave feeling, ‘I’m glad music like this exists.’
And I’ll do my very best to deliver the kind of incredible sound that you can only experience at a live concert.”
Q. After so many years in music, are there any new creative directions or genres you’d still like to explore?
“I’d like to try genres I’ve never explored before.
I’d love to write something with a darker sound, maybe even a grunge rock song.”
Q. Finally, what would you like to say to the fans who have supported your music for so many years, as well as those discovering it for the first time?
“I don’t want to disappoint the fans who have remembered and supported me all these years, or the people who are just discovering my music and looking forward to what’s next.
I suppose the best way to repay them is by giving them the best music and performances I possibly can.”
There was a time when Kim Kwang Jin didn’t even know that anyone was still waiting for him. Today, he is answering that devotion with new songs and a renewed commitment to the stage.
Some melodies endure long after the years have passed. And even for the artists who created them, there are always stories left untold.
For Kim Kwang Jin, another chapter is only just beginning.
