RSK: 〈Dive Into You〉에는 인물들의 몸이 뒤바뀌는 설정이 등장합니다.

From WJSN to Acting: Kim Ji-yeon on Love and Loss in Dive Into You
Best known as a member of the K-pop girl group WJSN and for her roles in Twenty-Five Twenty-One and Pyramid Game, Kim Ji-yeon takes on a psychologically demanding new lead in Dive Into You. Co-produced by and available exclusively on Viki, the K-drama features Jiyeon as Yoon Ha Na, a successful actor whose life has been quietly hollowed out by emotional numbness. Her world is further fractured by the death of her longtime friend and bodyguard, Jung Woo Jae (Park Seo Ham). Then the series bends reality altogether: following a mysterious accident, Ha Na and her twin brother, Yoon Ha Ru (Jang Se Hyuk), are transported back to 2010, where they find themselves inhabiting each other’s bodies—and confronting the possibility that they might be able to alter the circumstances that led to Woo Jae’s death.
For an actor, any one of those premises would be substantial material to excavate. Jiyeon is asked to contend with all of them at once, moving between grief and romance, physical comedy and existential uncertainty, while inhabiting a character whose sense of self is repeatedly destabilized—sometimes literally. Yet Dive Into You resists becoming merely a puzzle box of time loops and supernatural mechanics. Beneath its genre flourishes is a more intimate story about three people whose lives have been intertwined since adolescence, and about what friendship, love and grief can demand of us when we are given the impossible opportunity to change the past. It is within that tension—between the fantastical and the deeply human—that Jiyeon finds Ha Na’s complexity.
Jiyeon spoke with Rolling Stone Korea about inhabiting Ha Na, navigating the role’s many acting challenges and finding the emotional truth at the heart of a story that defies the boundaries of time and identity.
RSK: Ha Na experiences emotional numbness throughout the story. What were the challenges of portraying someone who has difficulty accessing or expressing her emotions? How did you use your physicality, facial expressions, or voice to communicate what she was feeling without making her performance seem flat or emotionless?
Kim Ji-yeon: I tried to portray emotional numbness in scenes that required intense emotional expressions, such as being unable to cry during a shoot, or feeling no joy upon being cast or winning an award. However, because Hana is a skilled actress, I figured she would use acting to express appropriate emotions for the given situations in her everyday life. Furthermore, I wanted to honestly portray the vulnerable state of anxiety she was driven into by her emotional numbness, specifically when she was in front of Woojae.
RSK: In the first episode, Ha Na apologizes and says that crying is her specialty. Do you have a particular acting skill or “specialty” that you feel especially proud of?
Kim Ji-yeon: I tend to synchronize well with characters emotionally. There were times when it was difficult, but now I consider it a strength and am trying to fully accept it.
RSK: Ha Na’s acceptance speech is one of the moments when she finally allows herself to be completely honest and vulnerable. What was it like to film that scene? What do you think gave Ha Na the courage to express those emotions so openly?
Kim Ji-yeon: I think the award acceptance speech scene was a moment that required immense courage from Hana, as it could mean giving up her career. And that courage was something she could only muster because of Woojae. Furthermore, I think Hana’s line, “I hope you will believe in me,” carried dual emotions because it was something she wanted to say not only to the public, but also to Woojae.
RSK: What was your approach to playing Ha Ru while he is inside Ha Na’s body? What aspects of Ha Ru did you want to preserve while still making it clear that we were seeing him through Ha Na?
Kim Ji-yeon: To help viewers intuitively understand, I made my voice tone thicker than Hana’s usual one and tried to blend in the everyday tone and mannerisms of Haru, played by actor Jang Se Hyuk. I also focused on Haru’s emotional line, truly thinking of myself as acting the character ‘Haru.’
RSK: Did you and Se Hyuk discuss each character’s mannerisms, speech patterns, or personality so that you could accurately reflect how Ha Na and Ha Ru might behave when they were suddenly in each other’s bodies? Were there any details you specifically borrowed from each other?
Kim Ji-yeon: We did a lot of group readings before filming, reading each other’s lines and having many conversations about how Hana and Haru would act in each scene. We referenced each other’s physical habits a lot, like our gaits or how we sat in chairs, and paid close attention to even minor details like wiping away tears.
RSK: Ha Na accepts the extraordinary situation of time travel surprisingly quickly. Do you think her experience as an actor—being used to imagining different situations and stepping into different realities—helps explain why she is able to adapt to something so unbelievable?
Kim Ji-yeon: I think the overwhelming drive to save Woojae, no matter the situation or method, played a huge role. Also, as will be shown in the latter part, because of Hana’s background as an actress who has done a lot of filming, some fun moments naturally arise as she quickly grasps the situation.
RSK: Because Dive Into You involves body swapping, if you could temporarily swap roles with another actor in the drama and perform one of their scenes, whose scene would you choose and why?
Kim Ji-yeon: Thinking of Woojae, since I’ve always looked at him from Hana’s perspective, I’m also curious about how Hana looks from Woojae’s point of view. It would also be fun to act out cool judo scenes.
RSK: Director So Jaehyun has said that while developing the drama, he thought about a theme song for each character. As someone with a background in music, how much can a song or score help you understand a character? Do you ever make playlists for the characters you play?
Kim Ji-yeon: In this project, it felt like playing several characters with uniquely different traits, so I relied a lot on the help of music. I created and listened to a playlist of songs with lyrics fitting each specific situation—from a teenager experiencing youth and unrequited love, to a high school athlete possessed by Haru’s soul, to Hana starting her first love in her twenties, all the way to Hana dealing with emotional numbness in her thirties and saying goodbye to Woojae—and I think it was a huge help.
