글로벌 스타로 떠오른 안효섭이 자신의 출발점으로 돌아왔다. 안효섭은 애니메이션 영화 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스(KPop Demon Hunters)>의 진우 역과 드라마 <사내맞선>의 강태무 역으로 잘 알려졌지만, 원래는 JYP엔터테인먼트에서 연습생 생활을 시작했다. 그는 갓세븐 멤버들과 함께 숙소 생활을 하기도 했다. 그리고 지난 5월 22일, 마침내 칼리드(Khalid)와 협업한 신곡 <Something Special>을 통해 공식 솔로 아티스트 데뷔를 알렸다.

이번 싱글은 국내 기업 뮤직카우(Musicow)가 락네이션(Roc Nation)과 손잡고 선보인 신규 프로젝트 ‘팬덤(FANDOM)’의 최신 결과물이다. 해당 프로젝트는 미국 증권 규제 체계에 기반한 투명하고 합법적인 구조를 통해 음악 저작권 지분을 분할 소유할 수 있도록 함으로써, 팬들이 자신이 사랑하는 음악과 더욱 가까워질 수 있는 경험을 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다.

곡 공개를 앞두고 <롤링스톤 코리아>는 안효섭과 만나 이번 글로벌 협업의 비하인드, 칼리드와 함께 작업한 소감, 그리고 언어의 장벽을 넘어 확장되는 현대 팬덤의 의미에 관해 이야기를 나눴다.

1. [RSK] 안녕하세요, 효섭 씨! 오늘 인터뷰에 함께 해줘서 감사합니다. 먼저 칼리드와 함께한 신곡 <Something Special> 발매를 축하해요. 팬덤 플랫폼을 통해 협업 소식이 처음 공개됐을 때 많은 분이 ‘의외의 조합이지만 정말 흥미롭다’라는 반응을 보였는데요. 이번 협업은 어떻게 성사됐나요?

바로 그런 의외성이 이번 협업을 더 흥미롭게 만든 것 같아요. 음악적으로는 서로 다른 배경을 갖고 있지만, 감정적인 결에서는 공통점이 많다고 느꼈거든요. 저 역시 오래전부터 칼리드의 음악을 즐겨 들었던 팬이었기 때문에, 함께하게 될 기회가 생겼을 때 어떤 분위기의 음악이 나올지 정말 궁금했어요. 실제로 이야기를 나누고 작업을 시작해 보니 생각보다 훨씬 자연스럽게 호흡이 맞았고요.

2. [RSK] 두 사람의 보컬 스타일은 각기 다른 개성을 가지고 있는데도, 이번 곡에서는 자연스럽게 어우러지며 하나의 사운드를 만들어냈어요. 그 이유가 무엇이라고 생각하나요?

보컬의 색깔 자체는 분명히 다르지만, 감정을 표현하는 방식은 굉장히 비슷하다고 생각해요. 저희 둘 다 무언가를 과하게 보여주기보다는 곡이 가진 진심과 따뜻함을 자연스럽게 전달하고 싶어 했거든요. 때로는 비슷한 목소리를 가진 것이 중요한 게 아니라, 노래가 담고 있는 감정을 같은 방식으로 이해하는 것이 더 중요한 것 같아요. 그런 부분에서 좋은 시너지가 만들어졌다고 생각합니다.

3. [RSK] 현재 두 사람 모두 굵직한 프로젝트를 진행 중인데요. 칼리드는 <IT’S ALWAYS SUMMER SOMEWHERE TOUR>를 통해 북미 전역을 순회하고 있고, 효섭 씨는 넷플릭스 시리즈 <오늘도 매진했습니다>에 출연했습니다. 이렇게 바쁜 일정 속에서 <Something Special>을 함께 녹음할 시간을 어떻게 마련했나요?

정말 많은 밤을 새워야 했어요. 하지만 창작적으로 의미 있는 작업이라고 느껴지면 어떻게든 시간을 만들게 되더라고요. 촬영하는 동안에도 이 프로젝트는 늘 제 머릿속 한편에 자리하고 있었어요. 그만큼 진심으로 기대하고 있었던 작업이었거든요.
 

4. [RSK] 이달 초에는 두 사람이 처음으로 대면하는 모습을 담은 독점 영상도 공개됐는데요. 실제로 처음 만났을 때 어떤 생각이 들었나요? 

솔직히 말하면 안도감이 가장 컸어요. 창작적인 교감이 먼저 이뤄지면 실제로 만났을 때도 같은 에너지가 느껴질지 궁금해지잖아요. 그런데 막상 만나 보니 정말 편안하고 자연스러웠어요. 어색함은 전혀 없었고요. 

5. [RSK] 작업 과정에서 두 사람의 창작적 비전을 모두 실현하기 위해 어떤 노력을 기울였나요?

무엇보다 중요한 건 서로에 대한 존중이었다고 생각해요. 의견이 다른 순간도 있었지만, 누구도 자기 생각을 관철하려고 하지는 않았어요. 항상 ‘어떻게 하면 이 노래가 더 좋아질까’에 초점을 맞췄죠. 덕분에 작업 과정이 스트레스가 아닌, 협업에 가까운 경험으로 느껴졌어요.


6. [RSK] 이번 곡을 통해 리스너들에게 전하고 싶은 핵심 메시지나 감정이 있다면 무엇인가요?

저에게 이 노래는 예상치 못한 누군가에게서 위로를 발견하는 순간을 담고 있는 곡이에요. 따뜻한 온기가 있으면서도 어딘가 향수를 불러일으키는 감정이 담겨 있죠. 무엇보다도 각자의 방식으로 이 노래와 감정적으로 연결될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

7. [RSK] 이번 프로젝트는 K팝과 미국 R&B를 잇는 협업이라는 점에서도 의미가 큰데요. <Something Special>을 함께 작업하면서 두 장르 사이에서 발견한 공통점이 있었나요?

두 장르 모두 감정과 스토리텔링을 매우 중요하게 생각한다는 점을 새삼 느꼈어요. 스타일이나 프로덕션 방식에는 차이가 있을 수 있지만, 결국 핵심은 사람들의 마음을 움직이고 공감을 끌어내는 데 있더라고요. 지금은 바로 그런 감정의 진정성이 전 세계 음악을 연결하는 힘이라고 생각합니다.

8. [RSK] 칼리드는 오랫동안 국내 음악 팬들에게 많은 사랑을 받아온 아티스트이고, 효섭 씨는 아카데미 수상작 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>에서 진우 역을 맡으며 미국에서도 큰 인기를 얻었습니다. 두 사람의 작품이 전 세계 많은 사람의 공감을 얻는 이유는 무엇이라고 생각하나요?

이제는 언어보다 진정성에 더 크게 반응하는 시대라고 생각해요. 음악이든 연기든, 관객들은 그것이 진심에서 비롯된 표현인지 느낄 수 있거든요. 문화적 배경은 달라도 외로움, 위로, 희망, 사랑 같은 감정은 모두에게 공통된 것이니까요. 그런 보편적인 감정들이 사람들의 마음에 닿는 것 아닐지 생각합니다.

9. [RSK] 마지막으로 <롤링스톤 코리아> 독자들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면 부탁합니다.

무엇보다도 늘 보내주시는 사랑과 응원에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 이런 프로젝트를 통해 전 세계의 더 많은 분과 새로운 방식으로 만날 수 있다는 사실이 정말 감사하게 느껴져요. <Something Special>이 누군가의 하루에 작지만 의미 있는 위로가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

Ahn Hyo Seop’s Solo Debut in Collaboration with Khalid is  “Something Special” 

Rising global star Ahn Hyo Seop is returning to his roots. While best known for acting in projects such as K-Pop Demon Hunters (Jinu) and Business Proposal (Kang Tae-moo), he originally started out as a K-Pop trainee under the esteemed JYP Entertainment, even living in a dorm alongside the members of GOT7. On May 22nd, he finally made his official debut as a solo artist with the brand new single “Something Special” in collaboration with Khalid. 

The release is the latest drop under FANDOM,  a new project launched by South Korea–based company Musicow in partnership with Roc Nation. The goal of this joint venture is to bring audiences closer to their favorite music by purchasing fractional shares of copyrights through a regulated, transparent structure under U.S. securities frameworks.

Just before the song came out, Rolling Stone Korea heard from Ahn Hyo Seop about the cross-border collaboration, what working with Khalid was like, and how fandom is able to transcend language barriers in the modern era.

[RSK] Hello Hyo Seop! Thank you for making time to speak with us today. We’d like to congratulate you on your new single “Something Special” with Khalid! When your collaboration was first announced via the FANDOM platform, many people thought it was an amazing, but also surprising match. How did this partnership first come about?

I think that surprise is what made it exciting. We come from different backgrounds musically, but emotionally I felt there was a lot of overlap. I’ve genuinely enjoyed Khalid’s music for a long time, so when the opportunity came up, I was curious what kind of atmosphere we could create together. Once we started talking, it actually felt very natural.



[RSK] What do you think is the reason that each of your unique vocal styles are able to seamlessly flow together and create the sound for the track?

I think our vocal colors are distinctive, but the way we approach emotion is very similar. Neither of us wanted to overdo anything. We wanted the song to feel honest and warm. Sometimes chemistry isn’t about sounding alike, it’s about understanding the feeling of the song in the same way.

[RSK] Right now, the two of you have huge projects in the works. While Khalid has been travelling across North America for the It’s Always Summer Somewhere Tour, you are currently starring in the drama series Sold Out on You airing on Netflix. How were you able to make the time to meet and record “Something Special” in between it all?

It took a lot of late nights. But when something feels creatively meaningful, you naturally make time for it somehow. Even while filming, this project stayed in the back of my mind constantly because I was genuinely excited about it.



[RSK] Earlier this month, an exclusive clip was released of you meeting in person for the first time. What kinds of thoughts went through your heads at that moment?

Honestly, relief. Because sometimes you connect creatively first, and you wonder if the real-life energy will feel the same. But the moment we met, it felt very easy and comfortable. There wasn’t any awkwardness.
 

[RSK] How did you ensure that each of your creative visions could be realized at the same time during the production process?

I think respect was the most important thing. Even if we had different ideas at times, nobody was trying to “win” creatively. We were always focused on what would make the song better. That made the whole process feel very collaborative instead of stressful.


[RSK] What is the main message and overall feeling you are hoping to get across to listeners with the track?

To me, the song feels like finding comfort in someone unexpectedly. There’s warmth to it, but also a little nostalgia. More than anything, I hope listeners feel emotionally connected to it in their own personal way.

[RSK] This cross-market release brings together K-Pop and U.S. R&B. After working on “Something Special” together, are there any striking similarities between the genres you were able to notice?

I realized both genres care deeply about emotion and storytelling. The styles and production approaches may differ, but at the core, both are really about making people feel understood. I think that emotional sincerity is what connects music globally now.

[RSK] Khalid has been widely beloved by Korean music fans for many years and you have gained an immense amount of popularity in the States for your role as Jinu in the Oscar-winning film K-Pop Demon Hunters. Why do you believe that your works are able to resonate with so many people around the world?

I think people respond to honesty more than language now. Whether it’s music or acting, audiences can feel when something comes from a genuine place emotionally. Even if cultures are different, emotions like loneliness, comfort, hope, or love are universal.

[RSK] As we wrap up this interview, is there anything else you would like to share with Rolling Stone Korea readers?

First of all, thank you sincerely for all the support and love. I feel very grateful that projects like this allow me to connect with people in new ways around the world. I hope “Something Special” can become a small but meaningful comfort to someone’s day.
