아티스트이자 프로듀서, 그리고 DJ이자  클럽 문화의 아이콘 페기 구(Peggy Gou)가 ‘Starry Night’을 발매한 이후 2년 만에 싱글인 ‘Nabi’로 돌아왔다.

신곡 'Nabi'는 유명 작곡가 에릭 사티의 피아노곡과 80~90년대 페기 구의 어머니가 어린 시절 집에서 연주하던한국 노래에서 영감을 얻은 98bpm 일렉트로닉 팝 스타일의 곡이다. 이번 신곡은 페기 구의 다양한 사운드와 영향의 다소 낯선 모습을 보여주면서 전자음악에 대한 그의 독특한 특징들을 보여주며, 향수를 불러일으킴과 동시에현대적 느낌을 한번에 받을 수 있는 곡이다.

한글 ‘나비’를 제목으로 하는 이 곡은  페기 구와  혁오밴드의 리드 싱어이자 기타리스트인 오혁의 첫 콜라보이기도 하다. 페기 구는 지난 2020년, 볼티모어의 테크노 전설인 모리스 풀튼(Maurice Fulton)( "Jigoo" 발매)과의공동 작업으로 화제를 일으켜 이번 신곡의 콜라보를 오혁과 진행할 수 있었다고 전했다. 

‘Nabi’는 페기 구가 앞으로 발표할 두 곡 중 첫 번째 곡으로 이후에 나올 후속곡은 빠른 템포와 킥으로 이루어져모두가 다시 함께 춤출 수 있는 여름을 사운드 트랙으로 만들 예정이라고 밝혔다. 그리고 이번 신곡 ‘Nabi’는 희망, 자유, 그리고 앞으로의 대한 긍정의 감정으로 채워진 노래라고 전했다.

이번 신곡을 발표하며 페기 구는 "사람들이 제 노래를 들을 때 희망과 긍정 그리고 좋은 기운을 느꼈으면 좋겠어요. 특히 ‘Nabi’를 들었을 때요. 우리 모두는 지난 1년 동안 너무나 많은 일들을 겪으면서 우리 삶의 문제와 부정적인 면을 직시하기도 했고 더불어 이 문제들에 대처하는 방법을 배웠어요. 이런 감정을 느끼는 것 또한 괜찮다는것을 받아들이게 된 거죠. 그래서 저는 대중들이 ‘Nabi’를 들을 때, 제가 이 노래를 통해 긍정적인 에너지를 받은것처럼 모든 것이 잘 될 것이라는 힐링의 느낌을 받을 수 있기를 바랍니다.”라고 전했다.
 

더불어 이번 콜라보에 참여한 오혁은 "Covid-19가 우리 사회의 일부분을 차지하게 된지 꽤 오랜 시간이 흘렀습니다. 이번 신곡은 ‘나비’가 되어 이전의 아름다운 날들로부터 날아가고 싶은 욕망을 담고 있는 노래입니다."라고 전했다.

한편 이번 페기 구의 신곡 ‘Nabi’는 지난 7일 공개되었다.

Artist, producer, DJ and club culture icon Peggy Gou returns with "Nabi" - her first single in over two years and the follow up to 2019's global crossover, "Starry Night".

 "Nabi" is an incredible piece of slow-burning, 98bpm electronic pop, inspired by 80s synth classics, the piano pieces of renowned composer Erik Satie and the 80s and 90s Korean songs Gou's mother used to play at home during her childhood. Showcasing a less familiar side of Gou's diverse sound and influences, it retains the hallmarks of her unique take on electronic music; at once both nostalgic and totally modern. 

"Nabi" - which translates as "Butterfly" - is also Gou's first ever vocal collaboration, as she teams up with fellow Korean sensation OHHYUK, the lead singer and guitarist in Hyukoh. It’s set to build on the widespread acclaim for her 2020 production collaboration with Baltimore techno legend Maurice Fulton (on his "Jigoo" release for Gudu) 

"Nabi" is the first of two songs Peggy Gou will release over the coming months. While the forthcoming follow up is set to dial up the tempo, kicks, 808’s and 909s to soundtrack a summer where we can all (hopefully) dance together in our thousands again, “Nabi” is very much the sound of now – a lowkey anthem fuelled by feelings of hope, freedom and positivity for what’s to come.

Speaking about "Nabi", Peggy Gou says: 

"When people hear my songs, I want them to feel hope, positivity, good energy. This is especially the case with Nabi. We've all been through so much over the last year and it's about facing up to the problems and negativity in our lives and learning how to deal with it. It's also about acceptance - accepting that it's ok to feel this way. When people hear "Nabi", they'll hopefully feel the same sense of healing - that feeling that everything's going to be ok - that I feel when I listen to the songs that inspired it"
