“Between Shadows, Empathy, and the Truth Within
Between darkness and empathy, the actor from Vikings reveals the sensitivity behind one of the most complex characters in contemporary television. Because in the end, beyond the character, what remains is emotion. And in that universal language, Alex Høgh Andersen has found his most honest way of connecting with the world.
We arrived at Alex Høgh Andersen for a very clear reason: his trajectory doesn’t just stand out—it reflects a broader shift in the industry. Today, Nordic cinema and television are claiming a powerful place on the global stage, bringing with them a language that is sophisticated, introspective, and deeply human. And Alex is undeniably part of that conversation.
That’s no coincidence. From his home in Denmark, he welcomed us with impeccable punctuality and a genuine enthusiasm that was felt instantly. There’s something about him that quietly breaks expectations: he’s not only the figure the world met through Vikings, but an artist in constant evolution.
At 32, his profile extends far beyond acting. Alex moves effortlessly across disciplines: he’s a filmmaker, a creative director for Oliver Green Watches, and a passionate photographer whose work—intuitive, almost contemplative—feels destined for gallery walls. It wouldn’t be surprising to see his photography soon exhibited, speaking with the same depth as the characters he portrays.
But beyond talent, what defines him most is the way he moves through the world. Warm, grounded, and deeply respectful, Alex carries a rare kind of authenticity. Whether he’s receiving praise for his work or engaging in everyday interactions, his responses come from a place of honesty. That same sensitivity extends into his support for humanitarian initiatives like Danish Red Cross Youth, reflecting an awareness that goes far beyond the screen.
And yet, his global impact remains closely tied to Ivar the Boneless. His performance in Vikings didn’t just make him an international breakthrough—it revealed an actor capable of taking on deeply complex roles from a young age. He began filming at just 21, portraying a character with a physical disability with such emotional precision that even medical professionals have recognized the authenticity of his work.
Today, that same drive is guiding him into new spaces. He spoke with excitement about his latest film projects, showcased at international festivals across the UK and beyond, and shared his growing connection to Asia—with a particular interest in the Busan International Film Festival. A space that not only celebrates his work, but also fuels his perspective as a creator.
Listening to him speak about cinema, discipline, and evolution… you realize his path isn’t built on ego, but on intention.
And that’s where his story becomes something more. Because what truly defines Alex Høgh Andersen is not just the impact of an iconic role, but his refusal to stay there. To repeat himself. To settle. In an industry that often rewards formulas, he has chosen risk: exploring filmmaking from behind the camera, shaping a visual identity through photography, and navigating between commercial and artistic spaces without losing his sense of self.
He belongs to a new generation of European actors who understand that real impact isn’t about constant visibility—it’s about building a voice. A voice that doesn’t need to be loud to be lasting.
And while the world may still remember him as the fierce Ivar, something far more compelling is unfolding in parallel: Alex is quietly writing a career that doesn’t rely on a single defining moment, but on continuous evolution. More freedom. More awareness. More ownership.
Because in the end, what remains isn’t just the character who conquered global screens—but the artist who chose to go beyond it. And in today’s world, that might just be the most rebellious thing of all.”
RSK: Your performance in Vikings left a deep impression on audiences. Personally, I came to the series through a family recommendation, but it was the complexity of your character that truly captured my attention. Given my background in medicine, I found the psychological dimension you built especially fascinating: a difficult profile, full of nuances and contradictions. In that sense, what was your preparation process like to bring such a demanding and unique character to life?
“Thank you very much. Interestingly, there wasn’t a traditional or extensive preparation. I was only 22 when I got the role, so I was very young and, honestly, less aware of many things than I am now. If I had to define it, I’d say my greatest tool has always been intuition. I relied heavily on it, because I didn’t have much life or professional experience to draw from.
But there was also something very clear to me: I’ve always been drawn to complex characters, antiheroes. I was never particularly interested in Superman, because he represents an almost unattainable perfection. On the other hand, I’ve always been fascinated by Batman, because he exists in that gray area between what is right and what is dark.
And when you’re given a character like Ivar, that’s exactly what you receive: a deeply contradictory being. Some would say he’s more anti than hero, but to me, he always had something heroic—at least from his own perspective.
We’re talking about someone born with a severe disability, in a time that neither understands nor accepts it, and who is also the son of a legendary figure. The pressure, the emotional neglect, the overprotection… all of that builds a deeply conflicted human being.
For me, the work wasn’t to judge him, but to defend him. To understand that every one of his actions—even the most questionable ones—came from a need to compensate for a deep sense of incompleteness.”
RSK: One of the most striking aspects of your performance is precisely its realism. From my medical experience, I was able to recognize family and emotional dynamics that felt very close to reality. Was it important for you to reach that level of authenticity?
“That is, without a doubt, the greatest compliment I could receive. From the beginning, I felt a great responsibility, because this wasn’t just fiction—it’s a reality many people live with. I wanted to portray it with respect, with truth.
So hearing that someone with your experience perceives it as real… that means the work fulfilled its purpose. For an actor, there is nothing more important than that: that it feels authentic.”
RSK: Beyond the emotional aspect, your performance also required a great physical and technical effort. What was that experience like on a daily basis during filming?
“It was an incredibly challenging character, but also very fun from a creative standpoint. Physically, it was demanding: I spent hours on the ground, wearing uncomfortable costumes, limited in movement. While others could move freely, I had to constantly adapt.
But that was exactly where the richness was. It was a character full of layers, contradictions, constant resistance, and nuances. And the fact that I got to portray him for 51 episodes was a gift. You don’t always get the opportunity to explore a character so deeply over time.
It was also very meaningful to hear people with disabilities say that, for the first time, they felt represented as strong characters. Because they are usually portrayed as weak or dependent, and here was someone who, despite his limitations, fought, survived, and, in many ways, triumphed.”
RSK: When a character is so intense and remains on screen for so long, it inevitably leaves a mark. From your experience, what was the process like of letting go of that identity and returning to yourself?
“That’s a very interesting question. For me, it wasn’t that difficult, because I’ve always had a clear connection with myself. Also, Ivar is very different from me, and that makes it easier to separate things.
Now, something important: I don’t use my personal experiences directly for acting. What I use are my emotions, because emotions are universal. I may not have lived exactly the same things as the character, but I understand what loneliness, pain, and frustration feel like. And that’s where I build from. For me, the most important thing in acting is empathy: the ability to put yourself in someone else’s place and understand why they do what they do.”
RSK: Your character has transcended the screen and become a reference for many viewers around the world. How do you experience that direct impact with the audience?
“When people call me Ivar on the street, I see it as a huge compliment. In an industry where new series, films, and content are constantly being released, having a character remain in people’s memory is very rare.
I’ve even seen tattoos of the character… and that’s a very real level of impact. It’s an enormous privilege.”
RSK: In the middle of a demanding and often distant industry, your closeness with the public is striking. There’s a sense of authenticity, respect, and genuine humanity. Where does that way of connecting with others come from?
“Thank you, truly. I think it all comes from my upbringing. I had very present parents who taught me the value of respect, empathy, and love as a daily language. I also think it’s important to recognize the privilege one has. I don’t always do it perfectly, but I try to stay aware of it.
At the end of the day, we’re all human. I would probably get nervous too if I met someone I deeply admire, like Jesse Plemons.”
RSK: Your career continues expanding into new horizons. What recent or upcoming projects can we expect to see, especially internationally?
“I’m working on Red, White & The Royal Wedding, an international project. I also participated in The First Murder, where I play a police officer in 1927. It was my first leading role in Denmark, and that came with a great level of responsibility.
I went from being part of an ensemble to carrying the weight of an entire story, and that was as exciting as it was challenging.”
RSK: The Asian film industry, particularly South Korea’s, has gained undeniable global relevance. From your perspective as an actor, what inspires you about this kind of cinema?
“I find it fascinating. South Korea is a global reference in cinema. Films like Memories of Murder, Parasite, and Past Lives have something very special.
There’s a different sensitivity: a combination of intelligence, originality, and a great ability to use silence. Sometimes, a look communicates far more than an entire dialogue, and that kind of storytelling feels deeply powerful to me.”
RSK: Beyond acting, you’ve developed a strong visual sensibility through photography. What role does this discipline play in your creative life?
“Thank you. Photography has always been a very important part of my life. It’s almost like a form of therapy. It helps me stay creative, especially during downtime on set. I always carry my camera with me because I’m interested in capturing real, spontaneous moments. I like to think that my life revolves around creating and capturing moments, both in front of the camera and behind it.”
RSK: On a more personal level, projects like Call Me Dad reflect a very particular creative curiosity. How did this idea come about, and what did it mean for you to develop it?
“It was born during COVID, at a time when everything had stopped. It started from a simple but provocative idea: what if your best friend started dating your mother?
From there, we built a full project. It was an incredible experience because I didn’t just act—I was also involved in the creation and production.”
RSK: Your creative profile also extends into design and business. What new projects are you currently developing?
“I like to stay active and creative in different areas. I’m the creative director of Nordgreen & Oliver Green. I’m designing new products, working on audiovisual projects, and constantly exploring new ideas.
There’s also the possibility of a continuation of The First Murder, which would be very exciting.”
RSK: It has truly been a pleasure speaking with you, Alex. Thank you for sharing not only your work, but also your perspective on life and art.
“No, thank you, truly. This has been a very special conversation. I think it’s always beautiful when an interview becomes more than just questions and answers—when a real connection is created. And I feel like that happened here.
For me, the most important thing, both in my work and in my life, is to stay curious, to keep learning, and to never lose that ability to empathize with others. In the end, that’s what allows me to do what I do: to understand other human beings, even when they are very different from me. I also try to constantly remind myself how fortunate I am. Being able to live from something creative, to tell stories, to connect with people across different parts of the world… that’s not something I take for granted.
If there’s one thing I’d like people to take from my work, it’s not just entertainment, but perhaps a small sense of having understood someone else a little better. Because I believe that if we can achieve that—even for a moment—the world becomes a little closer, a little more human. So thank you for this conversation and for the space.”
