아티스트들의 다양한 시도 속에 점점 더 음악의 스펙트럼이 넓어지고 있는 요즘. <롤링스톤 코리아>는 꾸준히 자신만의 색으로 활약하고 있는 덥비전(DubVision)을 만났다. 솔로로서, 할로(HALŌ) 프로젝트의 일원으로서 여러 무대를 넘나드는 그가 이야기하고자 하는 것들에는 하나같이 '설렘'이 묻어있었다.

1. [RSK]: <투모로우랜드 브라질(Tomorrowland Brazil)>, <월드 디제이 페스티벌(World DJ Festival)>, <송크란 뮤직 페스티벌(S2O Songkran Music Festival)> 등 주요 무대에서 공연하며 정말 바쁜 한 해를 보냈어요. 2025년은 덥비전(DubVision)에게 어떤 해로 기억될 것 같나요?

올해는 정말 정신없이 바쁜 한 해였습니다. 전 세계를 누비며 수많은 멋진 공연을 펼쳤죠. 올해는 메인스테이지 프로그레시브 사운드(MainStage Progressive sound)의 부활로 기억될 것 같고, 우리도 그 과정에서 큰 역할을 했다고 생각합니다. 올해는 지난 몇 년보다 한 단계 도약한 느낌이고, 내년을 위한 많은 기회들도 이미 펼쳐져 있어요. 그래서 어떤 의미에서는 지난 한 해가 새로운 시작처럼 느껴집니다.

2. [RSK]: 최근 할로(HALŌ) 프로젝트를 공식 발표했는데요, 이 아이디어는 오래전부터 마티스 & 사드코(Matisse & Sadko), 써드파티(Third Party)와 함께 논의됐다고 들었습니다. 할로 아이디어가 처음 떠오른 순간을 기억하나요?

이 업계에서 우리는 오랜 친구 사이였고 비슷한 음악 스타일에 대한 열정도 같았습니다. 그렇게 자연스럽게 할로가 시작됐죠. 처음엔 b2b 공연으로 시작했는데, 솔로 공연과는 또 다른 즐거움과 신선한 흥분을 느꼈어요. 커뮤니티의 관심도 점점 커졌고, 4월쯤 이름을 정해 보다 구체화하기로 했습니다. 콘셉트와 이름을 고민하며 시간을 보낸 끝에 결국 할로로 정했습니다.

3. [RSK]: <암스테르담 댄스 이벤트(Amsterdam Dance Event)> 기간 중 비밀리에 열린 팝업 공연과 <시카고 소셜 클럽(Chicago Social Club)>에서의 데뷔 무대가 엄청난 화제를 모았습니다. 덥비전으로 공연할 때와 비교해 할로로 처음 무대에 섰을 때의 기분은 어땠나요?

함께 무대에 오르는 건 정말 놀라운 경험이에요. 우리는 서로의 작업을 정말 좋아하기 때문에 하나의 무대에서 조화시킬 수 있다는 게 대단하죠. 조금 더 자유로운 솔로 공연도 정말 즐겁지만, 이번 프로젝트는 또 다른 멋진 선택이었고 친구들과 함께 공연하는 느낌이 더 강했어요. 게다가 프로젝트에 대한 반응도 뜨거워서 성장을 지켜보는 게 정말 만족스러워요.

4. [RSK]: 음악적으로뿐만 아니라 비주얼과 퍼포먼스 스타일 면에서도 할로는 덥비전과는 아주 다른 분위기예요. 이번 프로젝트를 통해 어떤 사운드를 실험해 보고 싶었나요?

음악적으로 할로는 우리 음악 스타일을 혼합하면서 신선함을 더하는 방식을 모색 중이에요. 우리는 메인스테이지 프로그레시브를 사랑하지만, 더 많은 청중에게 어필할 방법이 있다고 생각합니다. 할로는 시네마틱 사운드에 더 집중하고, 비주얼과 프로덕션을 결합해 완전한 경험을 선사할 거예요. '감정'은 항상 우리 음악에서 큰 부분을 차지하니까요. 지금 우리는 훌륭한 멜로디, 감동적인 보컬, 그리고 수준 높은 에너지를 유지하는 데에 집중하려 해요.

5. [RSK]: 최근 <투모로우랜드 상하이(Tomorrowland Shanghai)>에서는 할로로 성공적인 공연을 보여줬습니다. 글로벌 관객은 할로의 음악과 콘셉트에 어떻게 반응했나요? 그 순간은 당신에게 어떤 의미였나요?

첫 번째 <투모로우랜드 차이나>에 참여하게 된 건 우리에게 큰 영광이었어요. 우리는 <투모로우랜드> 크루와 친밀한 관계를 유지하며, 솔로와 B2B로 수많은 에디션에 참여해 왔습니다. <투모로우랜드>는 메인스테이지 프로그레시브 사운드로 가장 잘 알려진 페스티벌이라고 생각합니다. 이 페스티벌이 지향하는 '통합'이라는 콘셉트와 잘 어울리죠. 관객들의 반응은 벨기에와 브라질에서와 마찬가지로 놀라웠어요. 덕분에 우리는 매 순간을 즐겼습니다.

6. [RSK]: 할로를 "시대를 초월한 프로그레시브 하우스(Progressive house)"와 미래지향적인 사운드를 연결하는 프로젝트라고 설명했는데요. 현재 프로그레시브 하우스(Progressive house)는 어떤 단계에 와 있으며, 그 안에서 할로는 어떤 역할을 하게 될까요?

프로그레시브 하우스가 마침내 다시 부상하고 있다고 생각합니다. 테크노, 테크 하우스, 아프로 하우스 같은 장르들이 지난 몇 년간 주류를 이뤘지만, 사람들은 프로그레시브 하우스가 선사하는 황홀한 감정을 갈망하고 있다고 봐요. 저희의 B2B 공연뿐만 아니라 솔로 공연에서도 그 열기를 다시 확인할 수 있으며, 이는 계속해서 커지고 있습니다. 그 과정에서 이미 그렇지만, 할로가 미래에 큰 역할을 할 거라고 생각합니다. 

마틴 개릭스(Martin Garrix), 알레소(Alesso), 스웨디시 하우스 마피아(Swedish House Mafia) 등 여러 아티스트와 함께 우리는 이 사운드의 개척자예요. 프로그레시브 하우스를 다시 위대하게 만드는 것이 우리의 사명처럼 느껴집니다. 우리는 이 사운드를 사랑하기 때문에 커리어 내내 고수해 왔어요. 이제 그 사운드가 부활하는 만큼, 우리에게 주어진 임무는 이를 새롭게 재해석하고 새로운 세대의 프로듀서와 DJ들에게 영감을 주는 겁니다.

7. [RSK]: <Follow Your Heart>, <Rise Again>, <Endless Dreamers> 같은 덥비전의 대표곡들과 비교했을 때, 할로의 음악에서 감정적 방향성이나 메시지는 어떻게 다른가요?

방향성은 비슷할 거예요. 결국 우리 음악에서 가장 중요한 것은 감정이니까요. 다만 할로의 경우 더 영화적인 사운드와 시각적 경험을 결합한 형태를 추구하는 반면, 덥비전은 곡 자체에 더 중점을 두고 있습니다.

8. [RSK]: 덥비전과 할로의 여정을 함께 응원해 주시는 팬 분들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지가 있다면요?

여러분 한 분 한 분께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 팬 여러분이 없었다면 우리가 지금 하는 일을 해낼 수 없었을 거예요. 그래서 공연마다 가능한 한 많은 분을 직접 만나려고 노력합니다. 앞으로 몇 년 동안 여러분께 선보일 것들이 정말 기대돼요. 정말 대단한 일이 될 거예요!

9. [RSK]: 한국에서 공연하고 투어하는 경험은 어땠나요?

솔직히 한국이 제가 세상에서 가장 좋아하는 나라라고 생각해요. 사람들은 친절하고 따뜻하며, 팬분들은 정말 열정적이죠. 올해는 음악 작업도 했지만, 그저 한국을 즐기는 데에도 많은 시간을 보냈어요. 그리고 많은 사람들과 특별한 유대감을 쌓았죠. 게다가 한국 음식은 제가 가장 좋아하는 음식이에요, 하하. 제가 특히 좋아하는 건 김치찌개, 김치찜, 냉면이에요. 내년에도 서울을 자주 방문할 계획이에요!

10. [RSK]: 덥비전의 향후 1년 계획은 어떻게 되나요?

현재 제 일상에서 할로가 큰 비중을 차지하고 있지만, 여전히 덥비전에 집중할 시간을 내고 있어요. 내년에는 이미 몇몇 대형 공연이 예정돼 있고, 음악적으로는 오리지널 덥비전 사운드에 집중하고 있습니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 아티스트들과 신예 프로듀서들과의 협업도 많이 있을 예정이고요. 할로는 덥비전의 리브랜딩에도 영감을 주었기에, 2026년은 덥비전에게도 새로운 시작이 될 거예요.

These days, as artists explore diverse approaches, the spectrum of music continues to broaden. <Rolling Stone Korea> met with DubVision, who consistently shines with his own unique color. Whether performing solo or as part of the HALŌ project, traversing various stages, his words consistently carried a sense of excitement.

1. [RSK]: You’ve had an incredibly busy touring year, playing major stages like <Tomorrowland Brazil>, <World DJ Festival>, and <S2O Songkran Music Festival>. Looking back now, how do you think 2025 will be remembered for DubVision?

Its been a very hectic year, flying all across the world and playing so many amazing shows. I think this year will be remembered as the resurrection of the MainStage Progressive sound and I think we played a big part in that. This year feels like a step up from the past years and a lot of opportunities for next year have already unfolded. So in a sense the past year has felt as a new beginning.

2. [RSK]: You recently officially announced the HALŌ project. We’ve heard this idea had been talked about for a long time with Matisse & Sadko and Third Party. Do you remember the moment when the idea of HALŌ first came to life?

We’ve all been friends for a long time in this industry and we have the same passion for a similar style of music. So HALŌ started kind of organically. We started with some b2b’s and we had so much fun and got some new excitement compared to our solo shows. The hype from the community also started growing and we decided to make it more concrete with a name around April. We took our time thinking about the concept and the name and eventually decided on HALŌ.

3. [RSK]: The secret pop-up during the <Amsterdam Dance Event> and your debut show at <Chicago Social Club> created a huge buzz. How did it feel stepping on stage as HALŌ for the first time compared to performing as DubVision?

Its amazing to step on stage all together. We are big fans of each others work so being able to blend it in one set is amazing. I really enjoy performing solo too because I have a little bit more freedom but its a great alternative and feels more like performing with a group of friends. Also the hype around the project has been amazing so its very satisfying to see the growth.

4. [RSK]: Not just musically, but in terms of visuals and performance style, HALŌ shows a very different vibe from DubVision. Through this project, what kind of sound were you most excited to experiment with?

Musically HALŌ will be a blend of our music styles but we are finding a way to make it fresh. We love MainStage Progressive but we feel like there is a way into making it appeal to a wider audience. HALŌ will be focused more on a cinematic sound and combined with visuals and production to make a full experience. Emotion will always play a big part in our music so that what we are focussing on now; great melodies, moving vocals and still keeping the energy levels up.

5. [RSK]: You recently performed successfully as HALŌ at <Tomorrowland Shanghai>. How did the global crowd react to HALŌ’s music and concept, and what did that moment mean to you?

Being part of the first <Tomorrowland China> was a huge honour for us. We are very close with the <Tomorrowland> crew and we’ve played a lot of editions, either solo and b2b. I think <Tomorrowland> is the festival that is most know for the MainStage Progressive sound. It fits the overall concept of unity that the festival has. The crowd reaction was amazing, similar to Belgium and Brazil and we enjoyed every moment.

6. [RSK]: You’ve described HALŌ as a project that connects “timeless Progressive house” with a more futuristic sound. From your perspective, where is Progressive house right now, and what kind of role do you see HALŌ playing in its future?

I think Progressive house is finally on a rise again. Genres like Techno, tech house and afro house have dominated the last couple of years but I think people are longing for that euphoric feeling that progressive house delivers. We can see the hype at our b2b’s but also our solo shows again and it continues to grow. I think HALŌ will (and already has) play a big roll in the future. 

We are the pioneers of this sound (together with artist like Martin Garrix, Alesso and Swedish House Mafia to name a few) and it feels like our duty to make Progressive house great again. We’ve sticked to this sound throughout our whole careers because it is what we love and now that its coming back its on us to make it fresh and inspire a new generation of producers and dj’s.

7. [RSK]: Compared to iconic DubVision tracks like <Follow Your Heart>, <Rise Again> and <Endless Dreamers>, how is the emotional direction or message different in HALŌ’s music?

The direction will be similar because in the end what matters most in our music is the emotion. However, for HALŌ we are looking at more cinematic sounds combined with a visual experience where as DubVision is more based on the songs itself.

8. [RSK]: What message would you like to share with the fans who are supporting both DubVision and HALŌ on this journey?

I am very grateful for each and everyone of you. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our fans. That’s why at every show I try to meet as many of you in person. We can’t wait to show you all what is coming for the next couple of years, its going to be epic!

9. [RSK]: How did you experience performing and touring in Korea?

I honestly think Korea is my favourite country in the world. People are so friendly and warm and my fanbase here is so dedicated. I’ve been spending a lot of time in Seoul this year to work on music but also to just enjoy the country and I’ve made some very specials bonds with people here. Besides that Korean food is my favourite cuisine so I’ve been eating a lot too haha. My favourites are 김치찌개, 김치찜, 냉면. Im planning on visiting Seoul more often next year too!

10. [RSK]: What are the plans for DubVision in the next year(s)?

With HALŌ being such a big project in my daily life at the moment im still finding time to focus on DubVision. I have some big shows lined up for next year already and musically im focussing on the original DubVision sounds. There will be a lot of collaborations with some of my favourite artist and also up and coming producers. HALŌ has inspired me in a way to rebrand DubVision too, so 2026 will be a fresh start for DubVision too.
