올해 봄 여섯 번째 EP [Beautiful Mind]를 발매한 엑스디너리 히어로즈(Xdinary Heroes)가 본격적으로 세계 무대를 향해 나섰다. 현재 진행 중인 투어와 더불어, 세계 최대 규모의 음악 페스티벌 중 하나인 롤라팔루자(Lollapalooza)에도 이름을 올린 것. 첫날 ‘더 그로브(The Grove)’ 스테이지의 클로징 무대를 맡은 이들은, 이번 공연을 오래 기억될 순간으로 만들고자 했다. 공연을 불과 몇 시간 앞두고, 롤링스톤 코리아가 시카고 현장에서 그들을 만났다.

1. [RSK] 롤라팔루자가 열리는 시카고에서 이렇게 만나게 돼 반갑습니다. 먼저 멤버별로 소개 부탁드려요.

건일: 드럼을 맡고 있는 리더 건일입니다.

정수: 키보드와 보컬을 맡고 있는 정수입니다.

Jun Han: 리드 기타 준한(Jun Han)입니다.

주연: 베이스와 보컬을 맡고 있는 주연입니다.

O.de: 신시사이저를 맡고 있는 오드(O.de)입니다.

가온: 기타와 보컬을 맡고 있는 가온입니다.

2. [RSK] 공연을 앞둔 지금, 어떤 기분인가요?

건일: 롤라팔루자는 저희가 데뷔 때부터 꿈꿔온 무대 중 하나였어요. 드디어 이 자리에 서게 됐죠. 오늘 아침에 리허설을 했는데, 그 순간 ‘오늘 무대는 무조건 불태우겠다’는 확신이 들었어요. 지금 정말 기대되고 설렙니다.

정수: 아직도 꿈같아요. 실감이 잘 안 나요!

3. [RSK] 오늘 무대를 본 관객들이 ‘Xdinary Heroes’라는 이름을 떠올릴 때, 어떤 생각이 들었으면 하나요?

가온: 놀 줄 아는 놈들이 왔구나. 제대로 음악하는 밴드가 나타났다는 반응이면 좋겠어요. 

4. [RSK] 오늘 셋리스트는 단독 콘서트보다 짧죠. 어떤 기준으로 선곡했나요?

건일: 한 시간뿐이라 최고의 곡들만 골라야 했어요. 또 페스티벌이니만큼 현장 분위기에 잘 어울릴 곡들로 구성했습니다.

5. [RSK] 다른 후보 곡들도 있었나요?

건일: 네, 많았죠! 근데 지금은… 기억이 잘 안 나네요.(웃음)

6. [RSK] 페스티벌에서 보고 싶은 아티스트가 있나요?

가온: Cage The Elephant!

주연: 2hollis! 그리고 Korn이요. 이 밴드와 꼭 한번 같이 작업해보고 싶어요.

7. [RSK] (인터뷰일 기준) 롤라팔루자가 끝나기도 전에, 8월 2일 뉴욕에서 미국 투어 첫 공연을 하죠. 투어 중 쉬는 시간에는 주로 어떻게 보내나요?

가온: 무조건 많이 자요. 최대한 숙면을 취하려고 해요.

건일: 비행기에서도, 호텔에서도, 쉬는 시간이 생기면 꼭 자는 편이에요.

O.de: 저는 운동이요. 운동할 때 살아있다는 기분이 들어요.

8. [RSK] 악기를 연주할 때 ‘맑은 정신’과 ‘건강한 몸’ 중 어느 쪽이 더 중요하다고 생각하나요?

Jun Han: 충분히 연습이 돼 있다면, 정신이 조금 흐릿해도 몸이 편안하면 연주를 이어갈 수 있어요. 그래서 저는 신체 컨디션이 조금 더 중요하다고 생각해요.

9. [RSK] 지난 투어 이후 1년이 넘었는데, 라이브 무대에서 달라진 점이 있다면요?

O.de: 무대에서 더 많이 뛰어다닐 수 있는 곡들을 쓰기 시작했고, 전반적으로 음악이 조금 더 무거워졌어요. 메탈을 좋아하는 팬분들도 함께 즐길 수 있게 된 것 같아요.

10. [RSK] 신곡 <FiRE (My Sweet Misery)>는 멤버 전원이 작사·작곡에 참여했죠. 각자의 의견을 어떻게 조율하나요?

건일: 음악뿐 아니라 많은 사람과 함께 일할 때는 각자 의견이 있기 마련이라, 어떤 걸 선택할지가 중요해요. 그 핵심은 ‘잘 듣는 것’이라고 생각합니다. 귀는 두 개, 입은 하나잖아요. 자기 주장만 하기보다 서로의 이야기를 잘 듣고, 그중에서 여러 명이 좋아하는 방향을 택하는 편입니다.

11. [RSK] 최근 <나를 깨워줘>가 드라마 착한 사나이 OST로 쓰였는데요. 앞으로 또 참여해보고 싶은 OST가 있을까요?

건일: 개인적인 꿈인데, 다른 멤버들 중에서도 공감하는 사람이 있을 것 같아요. 게임 리그 오브 레전드 월드컵인 EWC 무대에서 주제가를 맡는 거요. 작년에는 린킨 파크(Linkin Park)가 했는데, 언젠가 기회가 된다면 저희도 꼭 해보고 싶습니다.

12. [RSK] 마지막으로 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면요?

O.de: 롤라팔루자 같은 큰 무대에서 공연하게 돼 정말 영광이에요. 오늘 함께해주셔서 감사합니다.

건일: 미국 투어를 하게 돼 정말 기쁩니다. 작년에는 뉴욕과 LA만 갔지만, 올해는 더 많은 도시를 방문할 수 있어 기대돼요. 넘치는 사랑과 응원을 보내주신 팬분들께 감사드리고, 그 사랑에 보답할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다.

Xdinary Heroes Brought the Fire to Lollapalooza Ahead of U.S. Tour

After the release of the band’s sixth EP “Beautiful Mind” earlier this spring, Xdinary Heroes have set their sights on international domination not only through their currently ongoing tour, but also an appearance at one of the largest music festivals in the world: Lollapalooza. With a key time slot as the closing act of The Grove stage on the very first night, it was the hope of all of the members to make this performance memorable. Just a couple of hours before, Rolling Stone Korea had the opportunity to hear from Xdinary Heroes about the upcoming set.

1. [RSK] Thank you for taking the time to speak with us here in Chicago during Lollapalooza! Let’s get an introduction from each member of the band.

Gun-il: My name is Gun-il. I'm the leader and I play the drums. 

Jungsu: I'm Jungsu. I'm a keyboardist and also a vocalist. 

Jun Han: Hi, my name is Jun Han. I’m the lead guitar of Xdinary Heroes. 

Jooyeon: Hi. I'm Jooyeon and I play the bass and sing.

O.de: My name is O.de and I play the synthesizer.

Gaon: My name is Gaon. I'm a guitarist and also a singer.

2. [RSK] Can you describe what you’re feeling leading up to the performance later?

Gun-il: Lollapalooza is one of the stages that we always dreamed of since we debuted. And now we're finally here. We just had a rehearsal this morning. And while we were doing the rehearsal, we just knew that tonight, we were going to blow the stage up. So we're very excited right now. 

Jungsu: I feel like I'm dreaming. It still doesn’t feel real!

3. [RSK] What’s one thing you’d want festival attendees to think when they hear the name ‘Xdinary Heroes’ after seeing you on stage tonight?

Gaon: “These guys really know how to play. People who know how to rock things out are here, finally!”

4. [RSK] Your Lollapalooza set is obviously quite a bit shorter than the one for full concerts. How did you decide on these specific songs?

Gun-il: Since it's just an hour, we had to narrow down our songs to the best of the best of the Xdinary Heroes playlist. And because it's a festival, we chose the songs that have a more festival vibe/mood. 

5. [RSK] Were there any others that the group debated on using instead?

Gun-il: Yeah, we had a bunch! But I can't really remember right now. Haha.

6. [RSK] Do you guys have any artists you’re particularly excited about seeing at the festival?

Gaon: Cage The Elephant!

Jooyeon: 2hollis! And Korn - I'd love to collaborate with the band Korn sometime.

7. [RSK] Xdinary Heroes are so busy - before Lollapalooza ends, you’ll all be in New York for your first U.S stop on August 2! In what ways do you all like to unwind when traveling between shows?

Gaon: We sleep a lot. We try to get a lot of sleep. 

Gun-il: On the plane. In the hotel. Whenever we're not doing anything.

O.de: For me, working out. When I'm working out, I feel alive. 

8. [RSK] Which do you think is more important when playing an instrument, having a sound mind or sound body? (i.e. clear head, or well rested physically)

Jun Han: If you’ve practiced enough, when your body is relaxed, your mind can be a bit disoriented but you can still keep going. So I think being well rested physically is a little more important.

9. [RSK] It has been over a year since your last tour - how would you say Xdinary Heroes have leveled up your live performances?

O.de: First, we started writing more songs where we can bounce around on stage better. And the music overall has become a bit heavier. I think it allows fans who enjoy metal music to dance with us. 

10. [RSK] We noticed that on your latest English track, “FiRE (My Sweet Misery),” all of the members have writing and composition credits. When working together, how do you make sure each individual’s creative opinion is taken into consideration?

Gun-il: It's a very complex question. In general, not just in music making but when working with lots of people, everyone has their own opinion, so it's very important how we choose what to go with. I think the key to coming to terms with all of these opinions is listening to each other very well. You have two ears but one mouth, so it's more important to listen rather than just forcing your own. We tend to really listen to what each other is saying and if there's some that go together and some that more people like then that's the way we’ll usually stick to.

11. [RSK] Your song “나를 깨워줘" (Break The Darkness) was recently featured in the drama “착한 사나이” (The Nice Guy) - Is there a dream series (movie, drama, video game) OST you would be interested in being a part of?

Gun-il: So this is one of my personal dreams, and I'm pretty sure some of the members share it as well - there's this game called League of Legends, and they have this World Cup event called EWC. Linkin Park just did the theme song last year. Maybe next time, if there's an opportunity, Xdinary Heroes might be able to do it!

12. [RSK] And finally - any closing words?

O.de: Thank you for joining us today. I'm so honored that we're here doing a performance at Lollapalooza and to be able to be on stage at such a huge event. Thank you.

Gun-il: We're also very happy that we're going on tour in the U.S. I know that lots of U.S. Villains wanted to see us. Last year, we were only able to visit New York and L.A. This year, we are able to visit more cities, so we're really looking forward to it. Thank you so much to our fans for their overflowing love and support. We will always do our best to keep up with that love.
