롤링쿼츠(Rolling Quartz)는 밴드의 불모지로 불리는 대한민국 대중음악계에서 특히 주목을 받는 록밴드이다. 20대 중반인 그들의 젊은 혈기와 창의력은 국내뿐 아니라 해외 팬들의 열렬한 지지를 이끌어냈다. 그리고 유튜브를 통해 팬 15만 명과 활발하게 소통하고 있다.
보컬 자영, 기타 아이리, 기타 최현정, 베이스 아름, 드럼 영은으로 구성된 롤링쿼츠는 강렬한 사운드와 날카로운 보컬로 대한민국 메탈 사운드의 명맥을 당당히 이어가고 있다.
멤버 5명이 각각 다른 매력을 지닌 롤링쿼츠는 이제 다음 목적지를 향해 나아갈 준비를 하고 있다. 015B와 김장훈 등 거물급 선배들의 주목을 받으며 당찬 행보를 이어가고 있는 롤링쿼츠를 롤링스톤 코리아가 만나보았다.

영은: 안녕하세요. 롤링쿼츠의 드러머 영은입니다.
아이리: 안녕하세요. 한국인 5인조 록밴드 롤링쿼츠에서 아이리로 활동하고 있는 빨간 머리 기타리스트입니다! 가끔 탬버린도 치고 건반도 치고 눈웃음도 칩니다.
아름: 롤링쿼츠는 5인조 하드록 밴드이며 저는 베이스와 헤드뱅잉을 맡고 있는 아름입니다.
2. RSK: 롤링쿼츠는 2020년 데뷔 싱글앨범 [블레이즈(Blaze)]의 발매 후 6개월 만에 유튜브 구독자 15만 명이 생기면서, 먼저 해외 팬들로부터 반응을 얻으며 성장했어요. 롤링쿼츠의 어떤 매력이 글로벌 팬덤을 만들었다고 생각하시나요?
자영: 일단 록의 불모지에서 마니아적인 장르를 한다는 것 자체를 특별하게 봐주시는 것 같고 무대 위에 있을 때와 아래에 있을 때의 갭 차이를 굉장히 좋아해 주세요. 또 많은 온라인 공연으로 해외 팬분들도 같이 즐길 수 있었고요. 동시통역해 주시는 선생님들께도 감사를 드립니다.
영은: 한국에서 록 음악이 대중적이지 않은데 그런 상황에서도 열심히 저희의 길을 가며 노력하는 모습을 좋게 봐주시고, 저희의 에너지 있는 음악을 많이 좋아해 주십니다. 팬분들의 댓글을 보면 저희 음악을 듣고 위로를 많이 받으면서 행복해졌다고 해주셔서 너무 감사해요. 앞으로도 많은 분에게 희망과 행복을 주는 음악을 들려 드려야겠다는 결심을 많이 합니다! 또 5인 5색의 각기 다른 매력을 좋게 봐주시는 것 같습니다.
3. RSK: 다음 앨범을 준비하는 와중에도 바쁜 날을 보내고 있죠? 대종상영화제 시상식인 ‘대종의 밤’ 무대에도 올랐고요. 시상식 무대에서 라이브 공연을 하는 것은 평소 음악방송에 설 때와는 또 다른 긴장이 있었을 것 같아요. 앞으로도 다양한 무대에 서게 될 텐데, 각자가 생각하는 꿈의 무대는 어떤 것인지 궁금해요. 목표로 하는, 롤링쿼츠의 공연이 올라가는 것을 상상해 본 무대가 있다면 자유롭게 말씀해 주세요.
영은: 오프라인 공연을 많이 못 해봐서 오프라인 공연을 가장 하고 싶고, 전 세계 ‘다이아뎀’과 함께 한곳에 모여 소통하고 가까워지고 싶어요! 팬분들의 얼굴을 직접 보고 공연하고 싶고, 격식 있는 공연도 좋지만 “다 함께 신나게 놀자! 우리는 하나다!”라는 파티 분위기로 공연해 보고 싶습니다. 당장은 다가오는 6월 4일 홍대 상상마당에서 저희의 첫 단독 공연이 있습니다. 일단은 가장 근접하게 상상하는 무대입니다.
아이리: 저는 유명한 록밴드라면 다들 서 봤을 영국의 음악페스티벌 ‘글래스톤 배리 페스티벌’ 무대에 서보고 싶어요! 제가 사랑한 밴드들이 섰던 곳이고 라이브 영상을 자주 보다 보니 제일 먼저 생각나는 곳이에요. 영원히 꿈으로만 남게 되는 무대도 있어요. 어렸을 때 홍대에 공연 보러 다니면서 '나도 꼭 저 무대에 서 봐야지!'라고 생각했던 ‘고고스2’, ‘클럽 타’, ‘스팟’ 등등 지금은 사라진 수많은 클럽이 있었어요. 불가능하지만 그 무대들에도 서보고 싶어요. 그리고 이번에 '대종의 밤' 무대는 많은 배우분과 관계자분을 대상으로 하는 공연이어서 조금 긴장되었지만 정말 재밌었고 인상 깊었습니다. 다른 시상식 축하 무대가 필요하신 관계자분들, 이 글을 보시면 롤링쿼츠 많이 불러주세요! (웃음)
아름: 온라인 콘서트를 할 때 동시 접속자 수가 1500명 정도가 되었고 전체 공연 시청자는 1만 명 정도였는데, 눈으로 보이는 게 숫자뿐이어서 도통 어느 정도의 인원이 우리 공연을 보고 계시는지 잘 그려지지 않았습니다. 우선 관객 1500명과 함께 뛰어놀고 싶어요!
4. RSK: 롤링쿼츠는 데뷔 전 각각 밴드 ‘로즈쿼츠’와 ‘롤링걸스’로 활동하던 이들이 모여서 결성되었다고 들었어요. 하나의 다섯으로서, 롤링쿼츠가 되기로 결심했을 때 가장 염두에 두었던 부분은 무엇인가요?
최현정: 사실 로즈쿼츠 멤버와 유대감이 깊은 사이가 아니었고, 롤링걸스 멤버도 처음 보았어요. 또 전에 하던 밴드도 마냥 좋게 끝난 것이 아니었기 때문에 걱정과 고민이 컸습니다. 그래서 멤버들 각자에게 따로 물어보기도 하고, 소속사 크루들의 얘기도 많이 들어보면서 무엇보다도 밴드 멤버들과 소속사 크루들을 믿고 한번 가보자는 생각으로 롤링쿼츠가 되기로 결심했습니다.
영은: 음악으로 하나가 되어야 해서 서로의 음악적 취향이 잘 맞는지를 염두에 두었고 같은 곳을 바라보며 함께 가야 하는 멤버들이다 보니 우리가 오래오래 함께할 수 있을까를 걱정했는데 그 걱정이 무색하게도 서로 너무 잘 배려해 줘서 싸운 적도 없이 잘 지내고 있어서 오래오래 즐겁게 함께할 것 같습니다!
아름: 제발 싸우지 말고 나가지 말고 오래오래 같은 팀으로 활동할 수 있기를 가장 많이 걱정했어요. 근데 거짓말이 아니라 지금까지 한 번도 멤버들끼리 싸운 적이 없습니다!
5. RSK: 롤링쿼츠는 데뷔 초에 015B의 프로젝트 [New Edition]에 참여했죠. 또 김장훈 선배는 음악방송 <쇼! 챔피언>에 이어, 최근 개최한 온라인 콘서트에도 게스트로 참여하면서 롤링쿼츠에 대한 지원사격을 아끼지 않고 있어요. 선배 록 가수들이 롤링쿼츠의 등장을 환영하고, 음악적 행보를 흥미롭게 지켜보고 있다는 생각이 듭니다.
자영: 너무 감사해요. 제가 어렸을 때 TV와 음악으로만 접했던 대선배님들과 협업할 수 있는 건 정말 큰 영광이에요. 부모님도 너무 좋아하시고, 저희를 이렇게 기특하게 생각해 주시고 예쁘게 봐주셔서 감사드려요. 선배님들이 열심히 갈고닦아 놓으신 길을 후배인 저희가 예쁜 꽃길로 만들어 보겠습니다!
아이리: 저희가 운 좋게도 좋은 선배님들을 뵙게 되어서, 선배님들과 정말 즐겁게 활동했어요. 전 세계적으로 록이 죽어버린 이 시기에 그래도 어떻게든 록을 하고 싶어서 안달이 난 여자애 다섯이 모여서 밴드를 하고 있는 것을 기특하게 생각해 주시는 것 같아요. 저희는 하고 싶은 음악을 하고 있는 것일 뿐이라고 생각했어요. 홍대에는 록밴드도 많고 저희는 그 안에 살고 있다 보니, 외부에서 록이 처한 상황을 잘 느끼지 못했었던 것 같기도 해요. 선배님들이 직접적인 도움도 많이 주셨지만 다양한 활동을 하게 되면서 시야도 넓어지고 배우는 것이 참 많은 것 같아요.
6. RSK: 앞으로 롤링쿼츠로서 지키고 싶은 음악적 기조와 새롭게 시도해 보고 싶은 퍼포먼스에 대해 말씀해 주시겠어요? 아울러 롤링쿼츠의 새 앨범 작업은 현재 어떤 단계에 있는지 힌트를 주시면 더욱 기대될 것 같아요!
최현정: 록이라는 장르 안에서도 다양함을 보여드리고 싶어요. 밝거나 어두운 분위기, 감동적이거나 긍정적인 에너지 등등 많은 모습이요. 새롭고 다양한 모습을 보여드리기 위해 노력하겠습니다. 요즘은 여러 촬영과 합주 연습, 무대 준비, 작곡, 커버 곡 준비, 인터뷰 등 바쁘게 지내고 있습니다. 아직 [Fighting] 앨범으로 활동 중이라서 새 앨범은 시간이 조금 걸릴 것 같아요. 남은 활동에 더 집중하고 좋은 음악을 또 들려 드릴게요. 감사합니다!
아이리: 저희가 발매한 곡이 많은 편도 아니고 활동을 많이 한 편은 아니라 앞으로 어떤 스타일로 음악 활동을 하게 될지 장담할 수 없지만, 그래도 분명한 건 저희의 곡이 듣는 이의 감정을 건드리고 공감할 수 있는 음악을 하고 싶다는 거예요. 응원이 되고 위로가 되며, 몰입이 되고 삶의 원동력이 되는 음악이요. 저는 개인적으로 무용하시는 분들과 뮤비 컬래버를 해보고 싶어요. 저희의 곡이 춤으로 표현되면 어떤 느낌일지 궁금하기도 하고, 호주의 유명 가수 시아가 미국 출신의 댄서 매디 지글러와 함께 작업한 뮤비들을 보면서 신선한 충격을 많이 받았어요. 음악과 가사가 현대무용적인 퍼포먼스와 만나서 전달력과 흡입력이 더해지는 것이 인상적이었어요. 저희가 무대에서 춤출 수 없기도 하고요. 저희는 이제 막 미니앨범의 프로모션 활동이 끝났고, 이제 기존에 작업하던 곡들과 새로운 곡으로 다음 앨범을 준비하게 될 것 같아요. 아직 앨범을 목표로 진행하고 있는 건 없어요. 하지만 다음 앨범은 롤링쿼츠의 느낌과 새로운 모습을 보게 되실 수도 있습니다!

Rock Will Never Die, Rolling Quartz
Rolling Quartz has become prominent in the Korean pop music scene (also referred to as a "wasteland for rock bands"). The youthful spirit and creativity of the members in their mid-20s have drawn enthusiastic support from fans worldwide. The band is actively communicating with its 150,000 fans through its YouTube channel.
Rolling Quartz keeps the legacy of Korean metal alive with its intense sounds and sharp vocals. The band consists of five members: vocalist Ja young, guitarist Iree, guitarist Choi Hyunjung, bassist Arem, and drummer Yeong eun.
With each member exuding a different appeal, Rolling Quartz is getting ready for the next stage of its journey. Rolling Stone Korea recently met this band, which has drawn the attention of famous rock singers such as 015B and Kim Jang-hoon.
1. Rolling Stone Korea (RSK): Hello, everyone. Please introduce yourselves and the band Rolling Quartz to our readers.
Choi Hyunjung: Hello! My name is Choi Hyunjung. I'm a guitarist for the Korean rock band Rolling Quartz. Nice to meet you!
Ja young: Hi. I'm Ja young. I am the energetic vocalist in the one-and-only Rolling Quartz.
Yeong eun: Hi. I'm Yeong eun, the drummer for Rolling Quartz.
Iree: Hello, everyone. I'm Iree, the red-haired guitarist of the five-member rock band Rolling Quartz! Sometimes I play the tambourine or piano, and I also smize.
Arem: Rolling Quartz is a five-member hard rock band. I'm Arem, the bassist, and a headbanger.
2. RSK: Rolling Quartz reached 150,000 YouTube subscribers just six months after releasing its first single album, “Blaze,” in 2020. The band grew with the support of international fans. What do you think made the band so appealing to create global fandom?
Ja young: First of all, I think many people find it noteworthy that we're making music in a crazy genre considered the "wasteland for rock music." Also, they like the difference between when we're on and off stage. International fans have enjoyed our music thanks to a series of online performances. I'm grateful to our synchronized interpreters.
Yeong eun: Many of our fans view us favorably as we tirelessly pave our own path even though rock music isn't very popular in Korea. Also, they love our energetic music. Reading the comments from the fans, I feel so grateful since they say they are happy and comforted by listening to our music. I want to make more music that gives hope and happiness to many people. Also, I think our fans are fond of the different styles of each member.
3. RSK: You must be busy preparing your next album. You performed at the “Grand Bell Awards.” I believe having a live performance at an awards ceremony might have given you a different type of stress than a regular music show. You'll be playing various stages in the future. But I'm wondering about your dream stages. Is there any stage you've imagined that Rolling Quartz will perform on? If so, please tell us about that.
Yeong eun: We haven't done many offline performances. So, I want to perform in person. Also, I want to get together with Diadem worldwide! I want to meet our fans in person. I want a formal performance. But, I also want to have a party-like one where we can shout, "Let's rock together! We're one!" We will soon have our first solo performance at Sangsangmadang Hongdae on June 4, 2022. That's the stage I'm imagining now.
Iree: I want to be on the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival, the British music festival where some of the most famous rock bands have performed! My favorite rock bands have been on that stage, and I've watched many of their live videos. There are some stages that I can only dream of. When I was young, I visited many clubs in Hongdae to watch performances. I wanted to perform at GOGOS 2, Club TA, or Spot sometime in the future. But, many of them disappeared. I know it's impossible now, but I still long to perform on those stages. The performance at the Grand Bell Awards was for many actors and staff. So, I was nervous but had a lot of fun. If anyone needs performers for another awards ceremony, please call us! (laughter)
Arem: The number of simultaneous viewers at our online concert was about 1,500, and the total number of viewers was about 10,000. But it was difficult to feel how many people were watching the show because all we could see was just numbers. First of all, I want to have fun with 1,500 audience members!
4. RSK: I heard that the band members of Rose Quartz and Rolling Girlz formed this band, Rolling Quartz. What was your priority when deciding to create Rolling Quartz?
Choi Hyunjung: In fact, I didn't have a deep connection to the members of Rose Quartz, and I'd never seen the members of Rolling Girlz. I had a lot of worries because the previous band I was in disbanded following some issues. I talked to each member individually, heard many stories from my crew members, and decided to trust the band and crew, to become a member of Rolling Quartz.
Yeong eun: I first wondered whether each member's musical tastes would fit together because we had to be on the same page when it comes to music. Since we had to look at the destination and travel there together, I worried about whether or not we'd be able to work together for a long time. But we have been so considerate of each other that we've never fought and have gotten along rather well. I think we'll be together for a long time!
Arem: I really hope that we never fight, no one leaves the band, and we five work as a team for a long time. But it's not a lie; we've never been in a fight with the members!
5. RSK: Not long after Rolling Quartz made its debut, you became part of the 015B's “New Edition project.” In addition, you appeared on Kim Jang-hoon's music “show! Champion,” as well as a recent online concert as guest performers. It seems like he is a big supporter of Rolling Quartz. I think older generations of rock singers are welcoming the birth of Rolling Quartz and keenly watching how your music and performance grow.
Ja young: I appreciate their support. It's a tremendous honor to actually collaborate with the great rock singers I've only seen on TV or growing up. My parents appreciate that as well. We are grateful to the rock stars for being proud and encouraging us. We will try our best to keep the great path they've paved alive.
Iree: I think we're lucky to have met great rock singers. It was fun to work with them. I think they appreciate that these five girls, who desperately want to make rock music, perform as a rock band when rock is dying worldwide. We thought we were just making the music we love. Since we usually perform in the Hongdae area in Seoul, where many rock bands perform, we were not quite aware of how the rock scene was doing elsewhere. Older rock stars directly helped us in many ways. At the same time, I think we have learned a lot, and our perspectives have broadened as we engaged in various activities.
6. RSK: Can you tell us about a music style you'd like Rolling Quartz to try or a performance you want to do down the road? Also, can you give us a hint of when your new album will come out? This will excite many fans!
Choi Hyunjung: We want to show various styles and moods in the rock genre, like light, dark, emotional, positive vibes, etc. We will work hard to bring you new and colorful music. We've been quite busy with various shoots, ensemble rehearsals, stage preparations, songwriting, cover song preparations, and interviews. We are currently performing songs on the album “Fighting.” So, it will take us some time to bring you a new album. We want to focus on performances left with this album and come back with good songs. Thank you!
Iree: We haven't released many songs or been on stage. So, we cannot say which style of music we're going to do. But one thing is for sure; we want to make music that touches people's hearts and identifies with them. We want to make music that cheers people up, comforts them, and drives their life. I personally wish to collaborate with ballet dancers for a music video because I wonder how they would express our song through dance. I was really amazed by Sia's music video in which American dancer, Maddie Ziegler, was involved. It was impressive that the music and lyrics met modern dance performance and became powerful and captivating. We aren't good dancers on the stage. We just finished promoting our mini-album. I think we'll prepare for the next album with songs we have completed and will make. We are not working on anything for the next album yet. But, you will definitely see something new in our style in the next Rolling Quartz album.
