1. [RSK] Welcome to Rolling Stone Korea, Ryan. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing very positive feedback about your work. I must confess that it was through the official Copa América song that I discovered your music. That piece struck me as exceptional—full of energy and authenticity. We sincerely hope that the South Korean audience can connect with you in the same deep and special way that you already do with the Latin American public. We’d love for you to introduce yourself: Who is Ryan Castro?
Ryan Castro: Essentially, I am a young man forged in the heart of the neighborhood, born and raised in the north of Medellín. My story is rooted in those streets where dreams grow amid struggle and hope, alongside my lifelong brothers—the “parceros” from the ghetto, as I like to say—with whom I shared the desire to become artists and transform our reality.
From those first steps, the neighborhood was both my cradle and my school. I started there, amid challenges, always searching for a way forward. In that search, I made the difficult decision to leave Colombia for a while, living on a foreign island where I continued working toward my dream. There was a time when I brought my music to Medellín’s public transport. I sang for the people, on buses and at stations, and that stage deeply marked my path, strengthening my career and shaping my character both as an artist and as a human being. It’s a part of my story that my followers truly value because it speaks of genuine effort and resilience.
That’s Ryan Castro: a dreamer from the neighborhood, a son of the ghetto who never forgets his roots. I proudly carry the slogan “El Cantante del Gueto” because I always want to remember—and for the world to remember—that I come from a humble place, and that my origins are an essential part of my identity and my art.

Ryan Castro: Like many artists, I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve tried many things; some didn’t work out, but most did, and that has taught me to keep going, stay strong, knock on doors, and strive to improve every day. Being surrounded by the right people has also been key, as well as staying connected with what’s happening in the industry. Urban music moves at an incredible pace, constantly changing, and you never know what’s coming next. That’s why keeping up with what’s trending on platforms, on the streets, what resonates with people, is vital. I feel that mindset, along with persistence and the drive to improve myself, is what has brought me this far.
Achieving success is incredible, but the goal is always to go for more—to push yourself as an artist and as a team. That’s what keeps us in the game, with the same energy and passion. You don’t settle for just one hit; you want to keep creating, doing more tours, connecting with more audiences, traveling, learning about cultures, opening new territories. 3. [RSK] I sense you’re someone who has never been ashamed to have started from the bottom with real effort and has never lost humility when sharing who you are and all that you’ve achieved. What do you think is the secret—or maybe the motivation—that has allowed you to keep being yourself, grounded and authentic?
Ryan Castro: I believe it all starts with not forgetting who I am or where I come from. Even though I no longer live in my neighborhood, I’m still very connected to it, and that keeps me grounded. My family, my longtime friends, the people who work with me—most of them have been with me since the beginning—are a key part of that. They are with me not because of what I have or the artist I am, but because of the person I’ve always been, and that helps me not lose my way.
With them, I’m not the public figure; I’m the friend, the son, the brother, and that allows me to enjoy what I do as an artist but also live peacefully as a human being. Staying connected to the people I love, to my neighborhood, reminds me that fame and money don’t define who I am or change me. That’s my motivation: to stay true to my essence.
4. [RSK] Let’s talk about that key moment in your career—the turning point when Ryan moved from performing his music only on buses, stations, and public spaces to establishing himself as the solid and structured artist who now leads with his unique style. How was that step, that change? What motivated you to show yourself to the world with such strength?
Ryan Castro: Honestly, everything that has happened in my career still amazes me. In urban music, the dreams that once seemed so far away can come true overnight, and that constantly surprises me. But one thing I’m clear about is that I never forget where I come from or everything I’ve been through to get here.
I believe in respecting the process. I like to enjoy every step and appreciate what comes when it’s supposed to come. Even if I could fill a stadium, I prefer to fill a club first, then an arena, and only after that aim for something bigger. What drives me is completing the whole journey without skipping anything.
That way of seeing things comes from when I started singing on public transportation—bringing my music from the streets to the radio, from the radio to clubs, and now being here, featured in international media like Rolling Stone Korea, with my music reaching new territories. For me, living each stage to the fullest is what makes this journey so special.
5. [RSK] Now, let’s dive into “El ritmo que nos une.” What an incredible track! It struck a chord and moved emotions on a global level. It’s a key moment because our football players are admired all over the world. Even in Korea, Colombians have made a name for themselves—it was very noticeable when Mauricio Molina played for FC Seoul. And now you’re making waves with this global hit. Tell us, how was this song born? What was the creative process behind a track that resonated so deeply with people? And how did you experience that boom when it went viral so organically and powerfully?
Ryan Castro: Creating “El ritmo que nos une” was an exciting challenge that came as a blessing. When I was offered the project, I knew it wouldn’t be easy to make a song that could bring everyone together through football, but I decided to follow my heart. Alongside my producer, we enjoyed the process and created something we ourselves would want to hear on the pitch.
I have a good relationship with players like Lucho Díaz and Juanfer—I invited them to sing on the track. We wrote their verses, and they joined the song, which made the experience even more special. Seeing global football stars lend their voices was incredible, and it definitely helped the song go viral. It was a unique moment.
I felt a bit nostalgic not being in Colombia to experience the full excitement of the song because I had just left for the Copa América, so I lived it all from the United States, where it was playing everywhere. More than just an anthem for the national team, it became the song of the tournament—every team was playing it and felt it was theirs. Witnessing that connection was incredible. I believe the song really motivated the team and left a mark. I'm sure it will continue to be heard during the World Cup and will remain a part of our national team's history. It was a process full of magic and heart.
6. [RSK] In Korea, we’ve always felt a warm welcome for our Latin rhythms, and that fills us with gratitude. From your perspective as a Latin artist, have you had the chance to explore or listen to anything from the K-pop industry? Is there something that has caught your attention about this global phenomenon?
Ryan Castro: Yeah, definitely. In fact, a lot of K-pop songs make it over here—I don’t know if it’s because they’re promoted directly, but I get a lot of ads on YouTube, and honestly, I like what I hear. I've had the chance to learn a little about the artists and the movement, and I think it's really cool. I’m super grateful that they’re aware of us. If the opportunity to collaborate ever comes up, trust me, we would bring all the love and energy to create something truly amazing.
7. [RSK] On your journey, you've not only achieved major milestones but also collaborated with some heavyweights—like J Balvin, who’s also been featured in Rolling Stone. Out of all those collaborations, which have been the most special to you, and which would you highlight so people are encouraged to check them out?
Ryan Castro: Most of my collaborations have come from good energy and a genuine connection, beyond whether someone is trending or not. For me, making music with another artist is something special, so I always look for chemistry and mutual respect. I don’t like forcing things just for the sake of strategy—I prefer to work with people I truly vibe with.
Of the most memorable ones, I’d highlight the songs I’ve done with Ferxxo, J Balvin, Karol G, Mexico’s Peso Pluma, Chris R—most of them from Colombia—and also big names from Puerto Rico like De La Ghetto and Myke Towers. They not only inspire me with their talent but have also shown me friendship and respect, and that’s what I value the most. I admire a lot of artists, but if there’s no real connection, I prefer to keep that admiration from a distance and not force a collaboration.
8. [RSK] We were so happy to see you sold out your U.S. tour. How did you experience that, and what did it mean to you to connect with the audience there?
Ryan Castro: It was an incredible experience. Beyond the tour itself, what made it really special was the context: the music industry in the U.S. was going through a tough time—many artists were canceling shows, and ticket sales were low, especially in urban music. In the middle of all that, we sold out. That meant a lot to me—seeing my fans showing up strong, supporting us no matter what. It was a unique moment I hope to experience again—hopefully in even bigger venues—and continue bringing my music to that audience that always responds with so much love.
9. [RSK] There was a concert in Medellín that became iconic. I saw the posts on Instagram—it was wild how you packed the stadium. And on top of that, J Balvin showed up as a surprise guest! That’s huge. What was that like for you? What did it mean to perform in your city and share the stage with such a massive name?
Ryan Castro: It was a show made from the heart. We wanted to give Medellín and Bogotá an unforgettable party—not for business, but out of love for the fans. We went all in so people could enjoy it, with incredible guests like Karol G, J Balvin, Feid, and Carlos Vives, who are also close friends. It was an epic celebration for the city, the country, and for everyone who’s been there since day one.
10. [RSK] Let’s talk about “A Poca Luz”, a song that became a major hit and has an incredible production alongside The Prodigiez. How did this collaboration come about? I’d love to know what it was like working with them—especially since they’ve also produced for big stars like you. What role did they play in the creative process, and what made this track so special?
Ryan Castro:
The Prodigiez are like brothers, and they’ve got a super fresh sound—with influences from afrobeat, amapiano, and all that energy that connects with Africa, Jamaica, and Nigeria, which I personally love. For this one, I wanted to collaborate with Hamilton, an artist from Cartagena who’s also very close to me, and I felt like that fusion would be something special. The Prodigiez had exactly the sound we were looking for, so we chose them to produce “A Poca Luz.”
Everything flowed perfectly—from the vibe in the studio to the music video—and people connected with the song instantly. Honestly, we were so happy with how it turned out that we want to keep creating more music with that same energy. I’ve got several tracks with them coming soon, and not just in the afro style—we’re also dropping trap, reggaetón, and other vibes that will probably come out later this year.
11. [RSK] Now let’s talk about the “A Poca Luz” video, which was especially meaningful for me because it helped shine a light on a part of Cartagena’s culture—an epicenter of Colombian independence—that hadn’t been in the spotlight before. It was powerful to see those roots portrayed so authentically, and in a way that really resonated with a global audience.
Ryan Castro: Like we said before—Ryan Castro is barrio, is essence—and I like to show that in my videos, in my travels, in everything I do. In this case, Hamilton—the artist I collaborated with—is from Cartagena, and we decided to film in El Pozón, a humble neighborhood where many people might not have the chance to come to our concerts. We wanted to connect with those people, bring them joy, and the energy we experienced there was incredible. The video came out amazing and really captured what we were hoping for.
That’s the beauty of music, right? Being able to connect, to bring emotion and happiness to places where sometimes there’s only chaos, and to make people—even if just for a moment—smile and feel like they’re part of something bigger.
12. [RSK] We’d love for you to tell us about your experience paving the way in Curaçao. We know you decided to move there to broaden your musical horizons, to learn, and take your career to the next level. How did you experience that process, and what kind of impact did it have on you as an artist?
Ryan Castro: Living in Curaçao was a very special experience for me. I spent some time there, and it really enriched me musically. In fact, it was while I was living on the island that my music started to take off—both in Colombia and in other places. I connected even more deeply with Caribbean sounds, with afrobeat, with dancehall—not just because I liked them, but because living that culture up close opened my mind to new rhythms, languages, and ways of experiencing music.
That sound is part of my essence, and even though I’ve explored other styles, my roots are in Caribbean music, afrobeat, reggae. This year, I want to return to more of that because my fans—especially those who’ve followed me from the beginning—keep asking for it. In fact, I recently released “Parte y choque,” and people went crazy hearing me back in that flow. So yes, that connection with the island and those rhythms continues to be a key part of my career and who I am as an artist.
13. [RSK] We noticed something curious—you’re the first artist to become a partner in a basketball club. How did that opportunity come about? What motivated you to get involved in sports that way?
Ryan Castro: I’ve always liked basketball, influenced by hip-hop culture. Even though I grew up playing soccer, I started practicing basketball and even built a court at my house. Then I met a business partner connected to the NBA, and he offered me the chance to be part of a team in Colombia. That’s how the opportunity came about—to become a partner and support a sport I’m also passionate about.
Right now, we’re working hard to bring more visibility to Colombia’s basketball league and Medellín’s team, which didn’t get much exposure before. We want the players to gain more fans, to get more support, and to have people come watch them play. I love it because it brings together music and sports, it connects culture with the dreams of many players who, like me, come from the neighborhood and are fighting to move forward. Being a part of that process fills me with pride.
14. [RSK] What inspires me the most about interviewing you is that you’re living proof that nothing is impossible. With hard work, discipline, and faith, you’ve achieved goals that may have even gone beyond your dreams—and that’s powerful. It’s an honor to share such a resilient and empowering story. How would you like the Rolling Stone Korea audience—and all of Asia—to receive your music and this interview?
Ryan Castro: Thank you so much, truly. I hope the audience receives my work the way I’ve always presented it: beyond the achievements, I want them to enjoy my music, my videos—everything that represents Ryan Castro. But above all, I hope they take away a message of inspiration, discipline, and hard work. I want people to understand that everything is possible if you focus and fight for it. It’s not about ego—it’s about showing that if I could do it, anyone can. I want my story to inspire, to serve as a real example of overcoming the odds.
