진정으로 ‘자유롭다’는 감각이 어떤 것인지 생각해본 적 있는가. 키노는 지금, 그 답에 한 걸음씩 다가가고 있다. 세 번째 EP [Lost and Found] 발매 몇 주 만에, 싱어송라이터이자 펜타곤의 멤버인 그는 솔로 투어 <FREE KINO>의 미국 마지막 일정에 돌입하며 뉴욕에서 그 시작을 알렸다. 공연을 앞두고 <롤링스톤 코리아>는 키노를 만나 새 앨범에 담긴 이야기와, 자신을 보다 솔직하게 표현하게 되기까지의 과정을 들어봤다.


1. [RSK] 안녕하세요, 키노! 오늘 함께해 줘서 감사합니다. 먼저 <롤링스톤 코리아> 독자들을 위해 간단한 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

안녕하세요, 키노입니다! 저는 펜타곤이라는 K팝 보이그룹 멤버이고, 지금은 솔로 활동도 하고 있어요. 현재 투어로 미국에 와 있고, 더 많은 팬분들을 직접 만나고 싶습니다!


2. [RSK] 세 번째 EP [Lost and Found] 발매 축하드립니다! 이번 앨범은 자신감, 시선, 자기 수용 같은 주제를 다루고 있는데요. 작업 과정에서 이러한 주제에 대한 생각이 어떻게 달라지거나 유지되었나요?

두 번째 EP 이후로 앨범을 만드는 방식을 바꿨어요. 제 진짜 감정에 더 집중하고, 음악 안에서 제 자신을 더 잘 드러내고 싶었습니다.


3. [RSK] 이전 인터뷰에서, 이번 EP가 <CLUB SEX CIGARETTES>이라는 곡을 통해 아이돌 문화에서 금기시되는 주제를 다루며 겪었던 강한 반응 속 비롯된 감정에서 출발했다고 말한 적이 있습니다. 한국에서는 다소 논란의 여지가 있는 주제로 받아들여졌지만, 해외 팬들은 그 솔직함을 높이 평가하기도 했는데요. 지금 돌아봤을 때, 시간을 되돌린다면 다르게 바꿀 부분이 있을까요?

다르게 바꿀 부분은 없어요. 다만 요즘은 제 관점을 조금 바꾸려고 노력하고 있어요. 어떤 사람들은 불편함을 느낄 수도 있지만, 제가 하는 작업을 좋아해 주고 지지해 주는 분들도 있거든요. 그래서 이제는 다른 시선보다, 제 생각을 기준으로 더 많은 결정을 하려고 합니다.

4. [RSK] [Lost and Found]는 전반적으로 일렉트로닉 사운드가 두드러지는데요. 이런 스타일을 시도하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?

이번 앨범은 2000년대 초중반 음악에서 많은 영향을 받았어요. 그 시기의 프로덕션 스타일이 제게 특별하게 다가오는 이유는 ‘단순함’이에요. 굉장히 직관적이어서 들을 때 편안함을 느낄 수 있거든요.


5. [RSK] 타이틀곡 <TAXI>는 반복되는 일상 속에서 가끔은 자신을 풀어주는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 이야기합니다. 최근 휴일에 평소라면 시도해보지 않았을 활동을 해본 적이 있나요?

가끔 레이브나 페스티벌에 가서 다양한 파티 음악을 듣기도 해요. 힘든 시기를 겪을 때 숨을 돌릴 수 있는 시간이 되기도 하고요. 그런 자리에서 많은 영감도 얻어요. 요즘은 더 다양한 경험을 하려고 노력하고 있고, 언젠가는 이비자(Ibiza)에도 꼭 가보고 싶어요!


6. [RSK] 대중의 시선을 항상 받는 직업이지만, <BIG HOODIE (feat. Mikey Angelo)>는 집에 머무는 일상의 편안함을 담은 밝고 유쾌한 분위기가 인상적입니다. 아티스트로서 일과 휴식의 균형은 어떻게 유지하고 있나요?

저만의 시간을 보내는 가장 좋은 방법은 그냥 누워서 12시간 정도 푹 자는 거예요. 그게 가장 잘 회복되는 방식이고, 가장 편안함을 느끼는 시간이거든요. 그 외에는 반복적인 음악을 계속 틀어놓고 듣는 것도 좋아해요. 단순한 음악을 들으면 생각을 내려놓을 수 있어서 굉장히 리프레시되는 느낌이에요.

7. [RSK] <HENNESSY (feat. 이윤정)>는 현실로 돌아오는 순간을 담으면서, 특히 1절에서는 ‘완벽한 셀러브리티 이미지’를 깨는 감정을 드러냅니다. 본인을 직접 보지 않으면 사람들이 잘 믿지 못할 것 같은 모습이 있다면 무엇인가요?

제 안에 분노가 꽤 많다는 점이요. 오랫동안 카메라 앞이나 대중 앞에서는 밝은 모습만 보여줘야 했거든요. 그래서 사람들이 제가 긴장도 하고, 화도 낸다는 걸 잘 모르는 것 같아요. 저도 결국 같은 사람이에요. 항상 단순하고 깨끗한 모습만 있는 건 아니거든요.


8. [RSK] <ALL LOVE!>는 진정한 인간적인 연결과 지금 이 순간을 살아가는 것의 중요성을 강조하는 곡입니다. 스스로 고립되어 있다고 느끼고, 그 상태를 깬 후 다시 세상으로 나가야겠다고 결심했던 순간이 있었나요?

작년 8월과 9월, 새 앨범을 준비하던 시기였어요. 비판을 받는 게 너무 두려웠거든요. 실제로도 제 생각을 더 깊이 드러내고, 제 안의 어두운 면까지 보여준 건 처음이었기 때문에 악플도 많았어요. 하지만 더 이상 숨고 싶지 않았어요. 그래서 제 안에 있던 벽을 깨고, 용기를 내보려고 했습니다. 그 이후로는 제 모습을 있는 그대로 보여줘도 괜찮다는 걸 알게 됐어요. 사실 아무것도 달라지지 않았거든요. 있는 그대로 살아도 괜찮다는 걸 깨달았고, 그게 세 번째 EP로 이어지게 됐습니다.



9. [RSK] <FREE KINO> 투어를 통해 이번 앨범의 서사를 어떻게 이어가고 싶나요?

<FREE KINO>는 [EVERYBODY'S GUILTY, BUT NO ONE'S TO BLAME]과 [Lost and Found]를 잇는 하나의 다리 같은 존재라고 생각해요. 공연에 오시면, 무대 위에서 제 안의 답답함을 해방시키려는 모습을 보실 수 있을 거예요. 그리고 관객분들이 저와 함께 소리 지르고, 에너지를 나누고, 함께 춤추면서 결국에는 같이 자유로워지는 순간을 만들고 싶습니다.


10. [RSK] 인터뷰를 마무리하며, <롤링스톤 코리아> 독자들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면 부탁드립니다.

축하드립니다. 새로운 최애 아티스트를 발견하셨어요! (웃음) 

제 음악을 들을 때 저를 완전히 이해하지 않아도 괜찮다고 말씀드리고 싶어요. 제 가사 속 한 문장, 한 단어에라도 공감해 주신다면 그걸로 충분합니다. 제가 아티스트로서 전하고 싶은 건, 여러분이 혼자가 아니라는 거예요. 아주 작은 부분일지라도, 여러분과 닮은 사람이 여기 있다는 걸 느끼셨으면 합니다.

KINO Was Lost, Found, and Finally Freed Through The Release of His Third EP

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to feel truly free? Well, KINO is on the way to finding that out. Only a few weeks after the release of his third EP Lost and Found,  the singer-songwriter and member of globally recognized group PENTAGON embarked on the final U.S. leg of his solo FREE KINO tour, kicking things off in New York City. Before the show, Rolling Stone Korea met up with KINO to discuss the new album and how he has been able to finally express himself authentically to the world. 


[RSK] Hello KINO, thank you for joining us today! Let’s begin with a quick self introduction for our readers.

KINO: Hi, my name is KINO! I'm a member of a K-Pop boy band called PENTAGON, and I’m doing my own thing now. I'm currently in the U.S. for my tour, where I hope to meet even more fans in person!


[RSK] Congratulations on the release of Lost and Found! The EP touches on themes like confidence, perspective, and self-acceptance - how has your outlook on these subjects changed or stayed the same throughout the creation of this album?

KINO: After my second EP, I changed the process of how I make albums. I wanted to focus on more of my real emotions and represent myself in the music. 


[RSK] You’ve mentioned before that this EP was inspired by the emotions you felt while dealing with harsh backlash for addressing taboo topics in idol culture on the song “CLUB SEX CIGARETTES.” While the subjects were considered controversial by many in Korea, a lot of international fans appreciated the candor of your music. Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently? 

KINO: There isn't anything I’ve done that I would do differently, but what I’ve been trying to do lately is change my perspective. Some people might take offense or feel uneasy about things, but there are others who appreciate what I put out there and support me. So I’m trying to focus more on making decisions based on my own thoughts.

[RSK] Lost and Found leans heavily into electronic production. What motivated you to try out this kind of sound? 

KINO: This album was influenced a lot by music from the early and mid-2000s. The reason styles of production from that time stand out to me is their simplicity. They’re very direct, which is why you’re able to feel at ease while listening.


[RSK] The feature track “TAXI” leans into the monotony of everyday life and how important it is to just let loose once in a while. Is there an activity you’ve done on a day off recently that you never imagined trying before?

KINO: Sometimes I attend raves or festivals to listen to different kinds of party music. It gives me a chance to breathe when I’m going through hard times. I also get a lot of inspiration from those events. I'm trying to go out and experience a lot more things now. I really want to travel to Ibiza at one point!


[RSK] Despite being in an industry where you are often in the public eye, your song “Big Hoodie” with Mikey Angelo has a playful, lighthearted vibe that really encapsulates what it’s like to be a homebody. How do you maintain a proper work-life balance and make sure to get proper rest as an artist?

KINO: My favorite kind of me-time is when I can just lay down and sleep for like 12 hours. It's the best way for me to recharge and when I feel the most comfortable. But besides that, I like to listen to repetitive songs on loop. The simplicity of the music allows me to really let go and not have to think about anything. It’s very revitalizing.

[RSK] “Hennessy” featuring Lee Yunjeong is a snap back to reality, with the first verse especially leaning into the feeling of destroying that ‘perfect’ celebrity image in someone’s head. What’s one thing about you that people probably wouldn’t believe about you unless they saw it?

KINO: That I have a lot of anger in my mind. I’ve had to show happy faces in front of cameras and in public for a long, long time. So people don’t fully recognize that, yeah, I get nervous. I get angry, too. I’m also a human just like them. We're not all plain and pure.


[RSK] “ALL LOVE!” emphasizes the necessity for real human connection and living in the moment. Was there ever a time when you felt isolated (either figuratively or literally) and knew you needed to break the cycle and get back out into the world?

KINO: Last August and September, back when I was preparing for my new album. I was so scared of getting criticized. And honestly, there were a lot of hate comments because it was the first time I allowed the world to see deeper into my thoughts and showed a more negative side of myself. But I knew I didn’t want to hide anymore, so I tried to break the wall in my mind and be brave. After that, I learned it really was fine to show me to the world. Nothing had changed, actually. I realized it is okay to live as who I am, which brought me to making my third EP.

[RSK] How do you hope to continue the narrative of this album with your <FREE KINO> Tour?

KINO: I’d say that <FREE KINO> is the bridge between Everybody's Guilty, But No One's To Blame and Lost and Found. If you come to my show, you'll see that I'm going to try to liberate myself from frustrations on stage. And the more the crowd shouts and freaks out with me, we share our feelings and dance and finally become free together.


[RSK] As the interview is coming to a close, is there anything else you would like to share with Rolling Stone Korea readers?

KINO: Congratulations. You’ve discovered your new favorite artist! That's all. (laughs) 

I’d like to say to readers that you don't have to understand everything about me to listen to my music. If you can relate to even one sentence or word of my lyrics, it’s enough for me. What I want to convey through my activities as an artist is that you are not alone. There is a person who is like you, even if the similarities might be small.
