언제나 제 맘속의 1등은 <사이다>일 것 같아요. - 원흠
2005년 노라조가 세상에 등장했을 때 우리는 우리의 눈과 귀를 의심했다. 아니 그렇게 데뷔하겠다고 한 가수와 그렇게 데뷔시킨 제작사도 이해하지 못했다. 그들이 강렬한 록과 정상의 메탈 밴드를 연상케 하는 엄청난 가창력을 가지고서 내놓은 음악은 ‘일상의 농담’이었다. 당시 이들에 대해 ‘컨츄리꼬꼬 이후 유머러스한 음악 시장의 영역이 다소 주춤한 시기에 해당 시장에 치고 들어오려고 나온 팀’이라는 평도 있었다. 16년이 지난 지금 음악에 대한 그들의 자세를 재조명해 보면 사뭇 다른 결론을 내릴 수밖에 없다. “이 형들, 원래부터 제대로 미쳤었구나.”
이 ‘미친 형들’은 그렇게 16년간 싸이월드를 지나 모바일 시대를 거치는 동안 숱한 ‘밈’을 스스로 제공하며 대중의 곁에서 노래했다. 그들은 2005년도에는 ‘엽기’가 되었고 지금은 ‘병맛’(이 단어도 이제 옛말이 되어간다)이자 ‘빌런’이 되었지만, 사실은 늘 그 자리에서 그 모습으로 노래를 불러 왔다. 이렇듯 노라조가 대중에게 사랑받는 이유는 변치 않는 모습으로 끊임없이 노력하고 있기 때문이다. 혹자는 ‘어디 내놔도 부끄러운 형들’이란 표현으로 이들의 모든 것을 압축한다. 꼭 맞고 익살스러운 표현이지만 오늘 인터뷰에서만큼은 다음과 같이 표현하고 싶다. “어디에 내놔도 자랑스러운 유쾌한 우리 형들” 바로 그 노라조를 롤링스톤 코리아에서 직접 만나 보았다.
안녕하세요, 만나 뵙게 되어 반갑습니다. 인터뷰에 앞서 간단한 소개와 인사를 부탁드립니다.
조빈: 안녕하세요! 노라조에서 리더와 이상한 행동을 담당하고 있는 조빈입니다!
원흠: 안녕하세요. 저는 노라조의 신형 부스터 원흠입니다.
어느새 두 분이 함께하신 지 3년이 넘었네요! 두 분의 첫 느낌은 어떠셨는지 궁금합니다.
조빈: 원흠의 첫인상은 차분하고 부끄러움도 많고 소극적일 것 같은 이미지였는데 함께 활동을 해 보니 저보다 더 대외적이고, 미쳐 있고, 아주 훌륭한 B급 정서를 가진 가수라는 걸 알게 됐습니다! 노라조에게는 정말 천군만마 같은 존재랍니다.
원흠: 빈이 형을 만나기 전에는 무대 위의 모습만으로 판단할 수밖에 없었는데 많은 분이 공감하시겠지만 그냥 ‘돌+아이’가 아닐까 싶었습니다. (웃음) 그런데 웬걸! 처음 딱 만나 보니 점잖고 차분하고 조용한 모습에 좀 놀랐죠. ‘아, 이렇게 차분한 분이 무대에선 그렇게 광기를 뿜으셨구나. 정말 프로시다.’라는 생각을 했습니다.
지금까지 대중과 팬분에게 선보였던 많은 음악 중 노라조 님에게 가장 의미 있거나 애정이 가는 곡이 있다면 어떤 노래인가요?
조빈: 저희 노래 대부분이 기쁨과 즐거움을 드리기 위해 만들었다면 이번에는 들으시는 분의 감정과 감성 그리고 공감을 위해 만들었습니다. 바로 <형>이라는 노래와 <멍멍이> 그리고 <mother of mine>, <가이아> 이렇게 4곡입니다. 힘들어하는 청춘들을 위해서 <형>으로 힘을 주고, 또 <멍멍이>라는 노래로 요즘 점점 늘어나는 반려동물의 반려인과 함께 마음을 나누며, <mother of mine>은 부모님께 고마움과 사랑을 표현하는 곡입니다. <가이아>는 기존 록 팬의 기대를 만족시키기 위해 준비한 11분이 넘는 클래식한 메탈 넘버입니다. 이 곡들은 평범하면서도 독특함을 보여줄 수 있는 노래여서 애정이 가장 많이 가는 것 같습니다.
원흠: 저는 단연 <사이다>를 꼽고 싶습니다. 아마 앞으로 계속 노라조 활동을 하면서 많은 곡을 발표하겠지만 언제나 제 맘속의 1등은 <사이다>일 것 같아요. 노라조는 기존의 팬 층이 아주 두텁고 마니아분도 많았던 터라 제가 새 멤버로 들어갔을 때 팬분들이 받으실 이질감을 어떻게 하면 최소화할 수 있을까 하고 정말 고민과 걱정이 많았거든요. 다행히 첫 곡 <사이다>를 많은 분이 사랑해 주셨고, 그 결과 광고까지 찍게 되어서 정말 감사하지 않을 수 없는 곡입니다.
어느새 노라조가 세상에 나온 지 16년이 되었어요. 16년이라는 시간 동안 노라조로 많은 사랑과 관심을 받았는데요, 이러한 노라조 님에게 꿈이지만 현실이 되었으면 하는 것이나 혹은 실제로 꿈에서 현실이 된 것이 있나요?
조빈: 노라조 노래를 좋아하는 많은 분을 찾아 뵙고 인사드리는 콘셉트의 팀이다 보니 다 같이 모여서 즐길 수 있는 콘서트를 꿈꾸게 됩니다. 특별히 데뷔 20주년이 될 때, 전국을 투어하며 대규모 콘서트를 여는 것, 이것이 저희의 큰 꿈입니다. 꿈에서 현실이 된 일이라면, 많은 사람 앞에서 노래하는 가수가 되는 게 꿈이었는데, 그 꿈이 진짜 이뤄졌습니다! 꿈을 하나하나 현실로 이루어가고, 현실에서는 그 꿈을 점점 키워서 마지막에는 궁극의 꿈을 실현해 보겠습니다!
원흠: 저는 노라조 합류하기 전부터 ‘왜 노라조는 해외 활동을 많이 하지 않을까?’ 하는 생각을 했어요. 이렇게 유니크한 그룹은 전 세계에 흔치 않다고 생각했거든요. 앞으로 열심히 해서 월드 투어를 한번 해 볼 수 있는 날이 온다면 정말 꿈이 이루어진 것처럼 느껴지지 않을까 싶습니다.

We Proudly Present, Norazo
The antic of these group members have provided countless memes. They have been part of the public in Cyworld to the mobile phone era for the past 16 years. They were "bizarre" in 2005, but now they are considered "weirdly funny rascals." In reality, they have always made the same kind of music. The reason the public loves Norazo is that they have always been true to their identity. Some may say that Norazo can be summarized by defining them as the "perpetually embarrassing friends." Although this definition may not be all wrong, today, we want to show this group's different, more fitting, wittier side. Rolling Stone Korea proudly presents Norazo.
Hello, Norazo. It's really nice to meet you through this interview with Rolling Stone Korea. Before our interview, please briefly introduce yourself and say hello.
JOBIN: Hello! I'm JOBIN, the leader of Norazo. I'm in charge of weird behaviors.
ONEHM: Hello, subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea. I'm Norazo's newly added member, ONEHM.
It's already been three years since you two have worked together! What was your first impression of each other?
JOBIN: My first impression of ONEHM was that he was calm and a bit timid. But now that I've worked with him for a while, I've learned that he is crazier and more extroverted than I am. He is a singer with a great sense of humor! He has such a strong presence in Norazo.
ONEHM: Before I got to meet Bin, I only got to see him on stage. So I thought he was a lunatic. I'm sure many of you would agree with me. (Chuckle) But wow, when I met him for the first time, I was so surprised to see that he was calm, reserved, and quiet. I thought to myself, "Wow, this guy turns it around 180 degrees on stage. He's one heck of a pro."
Out of all the songs you have showcased to the public, is there one song that is meaningful or you like the most? Which song would it be and why?
JOBIN: If most of our songs were made to give joy and entertainment to people, the more recent music was created to evoke the listener' s emotions, sentiments, and sympathy. The four songs are Brother, SWEET DOG, Mother of Mine, and GAIA. We wanted to encourage the struggling youth with Brother, share our emotions with the increasing population of pet owners with SWEET DOG, and express our love and gratitude to our parents with Mother of Mine. Lastly, GAIA is a classic metal song, over 11 minutes long, to satisfy our existing rock fans. These are ordinary songs, but yet also unique. So, I really like them.
ONEHM: By far, it would be CIDER for me. I know we're going to release many more songs as Norazo. But in my heart, CIDER will always be number one. Because the original fan base of Norazo was solid and had a lot of fanatics, I was concerned about how I could get to know the fans better. Fortunately, many people loved Cider which was my first song with Norazo. We even got to shoot a commercial for it. So it's a song I will always be grateful for.
It's already been 16 years since Norazo debuted. You have been getting a lot of love and attention from people throughout these past 16 years. Are there be any dreams you wish would come true? Or is there a dream that has come true?
JOBIN: Since we're a team and enjoy the fans who love Norazo's songs, I dream of a concert where we can all gather together. For our 20th debut anniversary, a big dream of mine is to go on a national tour and have huge shows. As for a dream that became true, I always wanted to perform as a singer in front of many people. So this dream has come true! I plan to fulfill my dreams one at a time, keeping on until I can make my ultimate goal come true!
ONEHM: Before I even joined Norazo, I wondered, "Why doesn't Norazo do promotions overseas?" I thought there weren't many groups worldwide that were this unique. When the day comes, and we go on a world tour, I will really feel like my dreams have come true.
