미국 힙합 스타 스눕 독(Snoop Dogg)이 2026 밀라노·코르티나 동계올림픽을 앞두고 미국 대표팀 ‘팀 USA’의 사상 첫 명예 코치로 임명됐다.

미국올림픽·패럴림픽위원회(USOPC)는 스눕 독이 동계올림픽 기간 전후로 미국 선수들을 응원하고 지원하는 홍보대사이자 서포터 역할을 맡게 됐다고 공식 발표했다.

스눕 독은 최근 올림픽 무대에서 미국 팬들에게 익숙한 얼굴이다. 그는 2024 파리 올림픽 당시 NBC의 특별 특파원으로 활동하며 큰 화제를 모았고, 개막식에 앞서 프랑스 생드니에서 성화를 봉송했다. 또한 2028년 로스앤젤레스 올림픽 개최지 인계식 무대에서 공연을 펼치기도 했다.

‘코치 스눕(Coach Snoop)’이라는 별칭으로 불리게 될 그는 미국 내에서만 2천만 장 이상의 앨범을 판매한 세계적인 힙합 아티스트다. USOPC는 스눕 독이 특유의 유머와 따뜻한 에너지로 미국 대표팀에 활력을 불어넣을 것이라고 기대감을 나타냈다.

스눕 독은 성명을 통해 “팀 USA 선수들이 진정한 주인공이다. 나는 그저 옆에서 응원하고 격려하며, 가끔은 작은 지혜를 전해주기 위해 왔다”며 “이 팀은 스포츠가 지닐 수 있는 최고의 가치인 재능, 열정, 투지를 보여준다. 여기에 조금이라도 사랑과 동기부여를 더할 수 있다면 그걸로 충분히 의미가 있다”고 밝혔다.

현재 54세인 스눕 독은 이탈리아에서 열리는 이번 동계올림픽에서도 NBC 중계진으로 다시 합류할 예정이다.

한편, 2026 밀라노·코르티나 동계올림픽은 내년 2월 6일부터 22일까지 이탈리아 북부 지역에서 열린다.

Snoop Dogg is set to make another high-profile appearance on the Olympic stage, taking on dual roles at the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics as both an honorary coach for Team USA and a featured member of NBCUniversal’s broadcast team.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) recently confirmed that the hip-hop icon will serve as the first-ever honorary coach for the American delegation, acting as an ambassador and morale booster for athletes before and during the Games. At the same time, NBCUniversal announced that Snoop Dogg will once again contribute to its Olympic coverage, offering his trademark commentary and fan-focused perspective.

Snoop Dogg became one of the breakout personalities of the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he appeared as a special correspondent for NBC, attended events ranging from equestrian sports to track and field, and took part in the Olympic torch relay ahead of the opening ceremony. He also performed during the handover event for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, cementing his status as a familiar face of the Olympic movement.

“I’m excited to be back with my main man Mike Tirico for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina,” Snoop said in a statement. “I’ll be on the ground celebrating with the athletes, their families, and the fans. The Olympics is the biggest stage in the world, and I’m all about sports, bringing people together, and keeping the energy fun.”

Known affectionately as “Coach Snoop” in his Team USA role, the 54-year-old artist — who has sold more than 20 million albums in the United States — is expected to bring his humor, warmth, and enthusiasm to the American athletes. He emphasized that the competitors remain the true focus of the Games, noting that his job is simply to uplift and support them from the sidelines.

NBC Olympics executive producer Molly Solomon welcomed his return, calling him the network’s “Ambassador of Happiness.” “We can’t wait to see how the kid from Long Beach handles the snow and ice of Italy at his first-ever Winter Olympics,” she said.

Snoop Dogg will travel between the Games’ two main hubs — the urban setting of Milan and the dramatic Dolomites mountain range — interacting with fans and athletes alike while documenting the Winter Games experience.

The Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in northern Italy from February 6 to February 22.
