«<Paper Plane>은 수줍으면서도 낙관적인 곡이에요. 종이비행기를 보내고 원하는 곳에 착륙하기를 바라는 어린아이같은 희망에서 영감을 받았어요. 어렸을 때 우리는 쪽지를 보내거나 친구들이 중간에서 메신저 역할을 하곤 했잖아요. 어른이 된 우리는 여전히 얼굴을 맞대고 소통하지 않습니다. 앱과 문자를 사용할 뿐이죠. »
페더 엘리아스는 아시아에서 큰 성공을 거두고 있으며, 서울에서의 슈퍼스타로서의 삶과 오슬로에서의 일상 생활의 차이는 크지만, 그에게 음악은 항상 가장 최우선 순위다. 올라운더 아티스트인 페더 엘리아스는 작사, 작곡 및 악기 연주, 프로듀싱을 할 수 있지만, 다른 사람들과 함께 일하는 것을 더 선호한다.
«서로를 밀고 격려하는 것도 중요하지만, 제게 가장 큰 동기를 부여하는 것은 제가 아이디어를 공유하고 방에 있는 모든 사람들이 아이디어를 얻었을 때입니다. 우리는 서로의 반응을 면밀히 살피죠. 그 순간이 너무 좋아요!»
때때로 이것은 온전한 노래가 될 것이고, 이외의 것은 언젠가 노래가 될 재료다: 운문, 코러스, 탑라인 또는 구절. <Paper Plane>의 경우, 학교에서의 기억이 서로의 시선을 사로잡고 종이비행기를 접어 보내는 이미지에서 시작되었다. 이는 곡의 초안이 되었다.
«저는 Tormod (Løkling)와 Iselin (Solheim))과 함께 <Paper Plane>을 썼습니다. 우리는 처음부터 순진하게 낙관적인 합창에 대한 아이디어를 가지고 있었지만, 그것을 끝내는 것은 실제로 약간의 노력이 필요했습니다. 우리는 하루 종일 네 개의 라인을 붙잡고 씨름했는데, 하루가 끝나갈 무렵 갑자기 전체 프리 코러스가 제자리에 들어서며 노래가 순식간에 완성되었죠.»
재능과 노력은 종종 행운의 기회를 만들어 낸다. 그리고 이는 재능 및 근면성실함의 가치를 더욱 빛내고, 그러면 긍정적으로 자기 강화를 하며 지내게 된다. 페더 엘리아스가 자신의 현주소로 느끼는 곳이 바로 그런 것이다.
«사실입니다. 저는 지금은 열심히 일하지만, 운과 타이밍이 제 편에 있기 때문에 더 많은 것을 성취한다고 느낍니다. 그것은 안팎으로 많은 압박으로 이어지지만, 동시에 동기부여가 된다고 생각합니다. 단지 히트를 치고 트로피를 받는 것을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 저와 제 음악에 진정성이 있는 팬들을 만나는 것은 저에게 큰 일이죠. 그리고 저의 첫 번째 한국 방문은 팝 스타의 꿈을 더욱 현실적으로 만들었지만, 그것은 사람들에게 존경받는 것이 아니라 제 음악으로 사람들에게 다가갈 수 있는 것의 가치를 확인시켜주었습니다.»
<Paper Plane>은 밝은 분위기로 진행되는 곡이지만, 지금 당장 우리에게 필요한 것은 '당신을 생각하는 사람들이 있다는 것을 상기시켜주는 것'이라는 점에서 의미있다.
페더 엘리아스는 3월 24일 금요일에 사람들의 마음 및 플레이리스트에 도착하기를 바라며 <Paper Plane>을 날려 보냈으며 현재 모든 음악 플랫폼에서 감상 가능하다.

«Paper Plane is a shyly optimistic song, inspired by the almost childlike hope in sending a paper plane and hoping it will land where you want it to. As kids we would send notes, or have friends act as go-betweens. We still don’t communicate face to face, using apps and texting.»
Peder Elias is enjoying great success in Asia, and though the contrast between life as a superstar in Seoul and everyday life in Oslo is large, music is always front and center.
The multi-talented artist can write texts and melodies, play instruments, and produce on his own, but much prefers to work with others.
«Pushing and inspiring each other is import- ant, but what gives me the most motivation is when I share an idea and everyone in the room just gets it. We’re all synced up and bounce off of each other. I love that!»
Sometimes this will result in a full song, and others something that can one day become one: a verse, a chorus, a topline or a phrase. For Paper Plane the memory of childish school crushes, catching each other’s eye and folding paper airplanes – perhaps with a secret message in it – to send. And this turned into a draft that took a little time to grow into a song.
«I wrote Paper Plane with Tormod (Løkling) and Iselin (Solheim). We had the idea for the naively optimistic chorus from the start, but finishing it actually took a bit of work. We spent a whole day just labouring over four lines, and then at the end of the day suddenly the entire pre-chorus just fell into place and the song was done.»
An example of how talent and hard work often creates lucky breaks that accentuates the talent and work. Almost a self-reinforcing cycle of positivity. Which is where Peder Elias feels he is right now.
«It’s true. I work hard, because I cannot take my foot of the metaphorical accelerator now, but I feel that I accomplish more now because I have luck and timing on my side. It leads to a lot of pressure, from without and within, but I also find the great results very motivating. And I’m not just referring to having hits and getting trophies. Meeting fans who have a real connection to my music and me is huge to me. And my first visit to Korea really gave me an unique perspective in that it made my dream of pop stardom more real, but also confirmed that it’s not about being admired, but about being able to reach people with my music.»
«Paper Plane» with its slightly naive message of hope may not seem all that profound, but if there’s one thing we need right now it is a reminder that there are people out there that are thinking of you.
