그 이름에 걸맞은 컴백 무대로, 빅뱅이 지난 달 초 <코첼라 밸리 뮤직 앤드 아츠 페스티벌(Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival)>에서 전설적인 퍼포먼스를 선보이며 전 세계의 이목을 집중시켰다. 수천 명의 팬과 관객들은 야외 스테이지로 몰려들어, 그룹의 대표 히트곡과 각 멤버의 개성을 담은 솔로 무대로 구성된 두 번의 잊지 못할 공연을 함께했다. 화려한 복귀 무대 이후, <롤링스톤 코리아>는 빅뱅을 만나 페스티벌을 앞두고 느낀 감정, 지금까지 쌓아온 음악적 발자취, 그리고 데뷔 20주년을 맞아 앞으로 이어갈 여정에 관해 이야기를 나눴다.

1. [RSK] 안녕하세요, 빅뱅! <코첼라> 무대와 오랜만의 컴백에 관해 이야기 나눌 수 있어 기쁩니다. 이번 페스티벌 출연 제안을 처음 들었을 때 어떤 생각이 가장 먼저 떠올랐나요?

지드래곤: ‘재밌겠다’였어요. 오랜만에 빅뱅으로 서는 무대이기 때문에 재밌겠다는 생각에 설레더라고요.

태양: 6년 전 <코첼라>에서 공연할 기회를 놓쳤고, 다시는 오지 않을 거라 생각했어요. 저희의 20주년을 시작하는 시점에 이 무대에 설 수 있어 진심으로 감사하고, 운명처럼 느껴지네요.

대성: 2020년 <코첼라> 때 오지 못했던 것이 당시에는 아쉬웠지만, 시간이 지나고 보니 올해를 위한 과정이자 빌드업이 아니었나 생각합니다. 빅뱅의 20주년의 시작을 <코첼라>와 함께할 수 있게 되어, 서로에게 더욱 뜻깊은 시간이 아닌가 생각합니다.


2. [RSK] 첫 번째 주말 공연을 앞두고 준비 과정은 어땠나요?

지드래곤: 오랜만에 멤버들과 의견을 주고받으면서 빅뱅다운 무대를 준비했어요. 무대를 시작하는 인트로 영상부터 마지막 <봄여름가을겨울 (Still Life)> 엔딩 영상까지, 모두 빅뱅다울 수 있도록 세심하게 준비했어요.

태양: 오랜 시간 동안 셋리스트와 무대를 준비하며, 그동안 그리웠던 팬분들과 처음 저희를 보게 될 분들을 모두 떠올렸어요. 오랫동안 함께해 주신 팬분들께 의미 있는 무대를 선사하는 동시에, 새로운 관객분들께도 신선한 모습을 보여드리고 싶었습니다.

대성: 한국에서부터 어느 정도 준비는 하고 왔지만 LA 리허설을 하면서도, 리허설 마지막 날까지 수정할 만큼 멤버들 모두 오랜만에 좋은 무대를 보여드리고자 바쁘게 보냈습니다.

3. [RSK] <코첼라>는 전 세계 음악 팬들이 모여 상징적인 아티스트들을 기념하는 자리입니다. 오랜 팬이든 처음 접한 리스너든, 이번 무대를 본 관객들에게 꼭 전하고 싶었던 한 가지가 있다면 무엇인가요?

지드래곤: 음악을 통해 공감하고 하나가 되는 것. GD, 태양, 대성이 모여서 만들어낸 빅뱅으로서의 무대를 오래 기억해 주면 좋겠어요.

태양: 한 단어밖에 생각나지 않네요, ‘레거시(legacy)’ 입니다.

대성: 저희 음악에 이미 추억이 쌓인 분들은 이번 무대를 통해 그때의 기억을 다시 떠올리고, 또 새로운 기억이 더해져 나중에 이 순간을 기분 좋게 떠올릴 수 있는 시간이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 처음 접하신 분들 또한 빅뱅에 대한 첫 기억이 각자 좋은 기억으로 시작되어, 앞으로 오래 함께할 수 있는 원동력이 되었으면 합니다.


4. [RSK] 최근 월드 투어 준비 소식도 전해졌습니다! 이번 <코첼라> 무대가 앞으로 펼쳐질 투어의 예고편이라고 볼 수 있을까요?

지드래곤: 네, 기대해 주세요. 출발점이 좋아서 더 좋은 모습 보여드릴 수 있을 것 같아요.

태양: 맞아요. 이제 시작일 뿐입니다.

대성: 물론입니다. <코첼라>는 모든 아티스트가 서기를 원하는 무대이고, 저 또한 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다. 이번 무대는 빅뱅의 극히 일부를 보여드리는 자리인 만큼, 앞으로의 공연도 많이 기대해 주시고 함께해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
 

5. [RSK] 태양은 과거 “언제까지나 좋은 음악을 하는 밴드, 롤링스톤스(The Rolling Stones) 같은 존재가 되자”라고 언급한 바 있습니다. 빅뱅으로서 앞으로 어떤 발자취를 이어가고 싶은가요?

지드래곤: 세대적 움직임이 오래 지속되길 바라며, 빅뱅은 늘 그렇듯 그 움직임을 계속 이어갈 겁니다.

태양: 그 말을 했을 당시 저는 어렸고, 롤링스톤스는 저희에게 매우 큰 영감을 준 존재였어요. 이제는 저희가 그 기준이 되어야 할 때라고 생각해요. 저희만의 발자취를 남기고, 저희만의 레거시를 만들어가고 싶습니다.

대성: 참 운이 좋은 그룹인 것 같습니다. 긴 시간 동안 사랑받아 왔고, 지금도 여전히 저희 무대를 기대해 주시는 분들이 많다는 점에 감사드립니다. 지금까지처럼 어떤 무대도 소홀히 생각하지 않고 앞으로도 계속 노래해 나간다면, 그 과정에서 자연스럽게 쌓여갈 좋은 기억들이 최고의 유산이 아닐까 생각합니다.
 

6. [RSK] 마지막으로, 팬들과 <롤링스톤 코리아> 독자들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면요?

지드래곤: 오랜만에 빅뱅으로 다 함께 인사드릴 수 있어서 기쁩니다. 올해는 빅뱅이 시작된 지 20년이에요. <코첼라>를 시작으로 자주 얼굴을 뵐 테니 기대해 주세요. 곧 또 기쁜 소식으로 만나요! 감사합니다.

태양: <코첼라>에서 20주년을 맞이하게 되어 정말 큰 축복이라고 생각해요. 지난 20년 동안 많은 것을 배웠지만, 아직도 모르는 것들이 많은 것 같아요. 하지만 한 가지 확실하게 아는 건, 바로 여러분의 사랑과 관심입니다. 여러분의 사랑과 응원이 없었다면 여기까지 올 수 없었을 거예요. 진심으로 감사드립니다!

BIGBANG’s 20th Anniversary Coachella Comeback Felt “Like Destiny”
 

With a comeback stage befitting of their name, BIGBANG made headlines around the world following their legendary performances at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earlier this month. Fans and curious onlookers made their way over to the Outdoor Stage by the thousands to witness two unforgettable sets consisting of the group’s most iconic hits as well as solo stages representative of each member’s unique personalities as an artist. Soon after their epic return, Rolling Stone Korea got to hear from BIGBANG about their emotions leading up to the festival, the legacy they have established so far, and how they will continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a group. 
 

[RSK] Hello BIGBANG! We are thrilled to have you here with us to speak about your historic Coachella stage and highly anticipated comeback. When you all heard that you were invited to perform at the festival this year, what were the first thoughts that came to mind?

G-DRAGON: ‘This is going to be incredible.' It had been a while since we last stood on stage as BIGBANG, so we felt excited thinking about how much fun it would be. 

TAEYANG: Six years ago, the opportunity to perform at Coachella slipped away and we didn’t think it would come back. We’re truly grateful to be on this stage as we kick off our 20th anniversary - it feels like destiny. 

DAESUNG: Although it was disappointing at the time that we couldn’t make it to Coachella in 2020, looking back, we feel it may have been part of the journey—a kind of build-up leading to this year. Being able to begin BIGBANG’s 20th anniversary together at Coachella makes it all the more meaningful for us. 


[RSK] What had preparations been like leading up to the first weekend?

GD: As it has been a while, we exchanged ideas with one another and prepared a performance that truly feels like us. From the intro video that opens the stage to the ending video for ‘Still Life,’ we paid close attention to every detail so that everything would feel unmistakably BIGBANG. 

TY: We spent a lot of time creating the setlist and stage, thinking about the fans we’ve missed as well as those seeing us for the first time. We wanted to create something meaningful for our longtime fans, while also offering something fresh for new audiences. 

DS: We came prepared to some extent from Korea, but even during rehearsals in LA we kept making adjustments right up until the final day. The members stayed busy, all wanting to show a great stage after such a long time. 

[RSK] Coachella is a festival where people gather from all around the world to celebrate the most iconic names in music. For those that attended your set, whether they be diehard fans or casual listeners, what is one thing you wanted them to take away from your performance?

GD: We hope people will connect through the music and become one. I hope they will remember the stage that G-DRAGON, TAEYANG, and DAESUNG created together as BIGBANG. 

TY: I can only think of one word – legacy. 

DS: For those who already have memories connected to our music, we hope this performance brings those moments back while also creating new ones, so that this time can be remembered fondly in the future. For those experiencing us for the first time, we hope their impression of BIGBANG begins as a positive memory and becomes something that allows them to stay with us.


[RSK] You recently announced that a world tour is currently in the works! Would you say that this Coachella stage was a good preview of what is coming?

GD: Yes, please look forward to it. Since the starting point is so strong, I think we will be able to show you even better things ahead. 

TY: Definitely. This is just the beginning. 

DS: Of course. Coachella is a stage every artist hopes to perform on, and I’m truly honored to be here. As this performance represents only a small part of what BIGBANG has to offer, we would appreciate it if you look forward to our upcoming shows and continue to join us. 

[RSK] Taeyang previously mentioned that you used to say “Let’s be like the Rolling Stones, a band that makes great music forever.” What is the legacy you hope to continue building as BIGBANG?

GD: We hope this generational movement will continue, and as always, BIGBANG will keep carrying that movement forward. 

TY: When I made that statement I was young, and The Rolling Stones were a huge inspiration for our group. Now, I feel we should be the ones setting that standard and leaving our own footprint and building a legacy of our own. 


DS: We feel very fortunate as a group—to have been loved for such a long time and to still have so many people looking forward to our stage. We’re truly grateful. Just as we always have, we will continue to value every performance, no matter the stage. As long as we keep making music, we feel that the good memories that naturally build over time may become our greatest legacy.
 

[RSK] Finally, is there anything else you would like to share with your fans and Rolling Stone Korea readers?

GD: We are happy to be able to greet everyone together as BIGBANG again. This year marks 20 years since BIGBANG began. Starting with Coachella, you will be seeing us more often, so please look forward to it. We will be back with more exciting news soon. Thank you. 

TY: It’s a blessing to celebrate our 20th anniversary here at Coachella! During the past 20 years we’ve learned a lot, but there are many things we still don’t know. However, one thing we are sure about is your love. Without your love and support, we wouldn’t have been able to do this, so thank you! 

DS: Thank you for being with us at this meaningful moment as we begin our 20th anniversary. Please look forward to the future we will create together as BIGBANG, rather than being bound by the path we’ve taken. Thank you.
