라이징 얼터너티브 팝(Alternative Pop) 스타 슬레이터가 본격적으로 스포트라이트 한가운데에 올라섰다. 그는 최근 상징적인 레이블 컬럼비아 레코드(Columbia Records)와 계약을 체결하고 새 정규 앨범 [WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA]를 발표한 데 이어, 코첼라의 모하비 텐트(Mojave tent) 무대에서 인상적인 셋을 선보이며 첫 코첼라 무대까지 성공적으로 마쳤다. 사막 한가운데에서, <롤링스톤 코리아>는 슬레이터를 만나 신보와 페스티벌 경험에 대해 이야기를 나눴다.

1. [RSK] 페스티벌을 불과 며칠 앞두고 메이저 레이블 데뷔 앨범 [WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA]를 발표했어요. 코첼라 무대가 이 곡들을 처음 라이브로 선보이는 자리였는데, 어떤 마음으로 첫 주말을 맞이했나요?

솔직히 모든 걸 처음 선보이기에 완벽한 장소라고 느꼈어요. 저는 오래전부터 코첼라에서 큰 영감을 받아왔거든요. 특히 2011년부터 2013년 사이, 제가 10대였을 때 텀블러(Tumblr)를 보며 공연 사진들을 접했던 기억이 커요. 당시 저는 세인트루이스에 살고 있었고, 그곳에 가게 될 거라고는 상상도 못 했죠. 음악은 물론이고 사람들이 입었던 스타일, 화관까지 전부 기억나요! 제 음악에도 그 시기의 감성과 당시 인터넷 문화가 많이 반영되어 있어서, 이 공간에서 그 곡들을 무대 위로 구현하게 된 게 정말 특별하게 느껴졌어요.

2. [RSK] 이번 무대에서 가장 기대했던 곡은 무엇이었나요?

<CRANK>랑 <YES GODDD>가 가장 에너지 넘치는 곡들이라서, 공연할 때도 제일 신나더라고요.

3. [RSK] 코첼라 준비 과정은 일반 공연과 달랐나요?

네! 이번이 밴드와 함께하는 첫 공연이어서 준비 기간이 훨씬 길었어요. 디테일 하나하나에 신경을 많이 썼고, 각 트랙의 디스토션도 세밀하게 조정했어요. 어떤 곡은 벌스에서는 디스토션이 강하게 들어가고, 코러스에서는 훨씬 몽환적인 분위기가 나거든요. 그런 보컬 프로세싱을 완벽하게 맞추기 위해 시간을 많이 들였어요.

4. [RSK] 어린 시절의 자신이 지금 자신의 모습을 본다면 어떤 반응을 보일 것 같나요?

정말 믿기지 않을 것 같아요. 완전 감격해서 기뻐할 거예요! 코첼라는 세계에서 가장 유명한 음악 페스티벌 중 하나잖아요. 사실 저는 코첼라가 정확히 뭔지도 모르던 시절부터 그 이름을 듣고, 아티스트들이 커리어를 대표하는 무대를 펼치는 영상들을 보곤 했어요. 그래서 아마 굉장히 놀라면서도, 감동해서 눈물을 흘릴 것 같아요. 제가 직접 코첼라 무대에 선다는 게 정말 아름답게 느껴져요.

5. [RSK] 마지막으로, 이번 페스티벌에서 보고 싶었던 다른 아티스트도 있었나요?
 

정말 많았어요! 턴스타일(Turnstile), 에델 케인(Ethel Cain) 무대를 보고 싶었고요. 잭 화이트(Jack White)는 첫 주말에 이미 봤어요. 그리고 애디슨 레이(Addison Rae)랑 기스(Geese)도 정말 기대됐어요. 좋은 아티스트들이 정말 많았죠!

Alt Popstar Slayyyter Makes Breakout Coachella Debut

Rising alt popstar Slayyyter has stepped into the spotlight in a big way. Not only has the singer just signed with the iconic Columbia Records and come out with a brand new full length album, but she just made her Coachella debut with a standout set at the Mojave tent. While out in the desert, Rolling Stone Korea had the chance to ask Slayyyter about her latest releases and festival experience. 

[RSK] Only a few days before the festival, you had your major label debut with your new album Wor$t Girl in America! How did you feel going into the first weekend knowing your Coachella set would be the first time you’d get to sing these tracks live?

Slayyyter: I honestly felt like it was the perfect place to debut everything. I have been so inspired by Coachella, specifically by the performances from the years 2011-2013 when I was a teenager scrolling Tumblr and seeing photos. I was living in St. Louis, and I never thought I'd even be able to go. But I remember the music, the outfits people would wear, and the flower crowns! My music emulates a lot of that era, especially the internet culture around that time, so it felt really cool to have these songs be brought to life on stage in this setting.

[RSK] What song were you the most excited to perform and why?

Slayyyter: “CRANK” and “YES GODDD” are the most electric out of everything, so I think those are the most exciting to perform, honestly.

[RSK] Has preparing for Coachella been different than getting ready for a regular concert?

Slayyyter: Yes! It was my first time performing with a band, so the preparations for everything lasted a lot longer. I definitely took my time and was super specific with details and making sure the distortion per track was right. Some songs have distortion on the verses but are very ethereal during the chorus, so we really took our time to get all the vocal processing down.

[RSK] How do you think a younger version of yourself would react to finding out you are playing at the festival?

Slayyyter: Oh my gosh. I think my younger self would absolutely be over the moon! Coachella is one of the most famous music festivals in the world. Before I even really knew what it was, I would just hear that word and see videos of so many artists having these career-defining performances. So I’d be really shocked, but probably shed a tear at the idea. It feels very, very beautiful to be able to play Coachella myself.

[RSK] And finally: were there any other acts you wanted to see on stage?

Slayyyter: I had a lot! I wanted to see Turnstile, Ethel Kane. Jack White, who I saw the first weekend. And I was really excited to see Addison Rae and Geese. There were a lot of great acts!
