“I never took it as a game, even when we did it for fun, we knew internally it had to be done professionally, because we are not just friends working, some who were not on that wavelength left and despite that the conviction to do it doing things well was the key to what today we can say and show to the world. From the beginning we did things well, if you see my first videos and you realize that there was no budget, there wasn't much, but with very little we did the best possible."
Originally from the beautiful beaches of Mazatlán, Mexico, in an exclusive interview for Rolling Stone Korean, we received the talented Mexican singer and businesswoman, Kenia Os, who during the last decade has run a marathon of life in which she has grown in giant steps towards a success that today the whole world talks about and that serves as proof to show that “we are worthy of everything we dream of.”
Kenia's strength has allowed her to see there is no obstacle when there is disciplined work focused on achieving success. At 24 years old, she leads the most important music charts in Latin America such as billboard, among others, and is headlining in the most important festivals in the world, such as Lollapalooza, in which he recently performed in the Argentine capital. But since she has made success a habit, she is also the image of her makeup brandK Os Beauty, in addition to the face of globally positioned brands such asADIDAS.
All her great achievements are framed in a kind and humble personality from which we always receive the best disposition when it comes to empathizing with the public and the media, is why Kenia opened a quality space for us from his completely full itinerary to share with us a brief summary of her vast universe of achievements.
Our gentle guest artist told us about her life story, how she has prepared for the metamorphosis from influencer to singer and how her team led by a female front has been her key and support for everything to go smoothly.
After her successful performance at Lollapalooza Argentina, we have seen her continue forward with important collaborations with Latin American music groups such as the group Miranda, La Joaqui andVillano Antillano.
1. [RSK] Kenia! It is a pleasure for us to welcome you, we hope you have a good time sharing your multiphasic growth,
I'm really happy to greet you for the first time. I am a singer, Mexican, I have my makeup company. Started everything approximately six years ago. The first thing that was trending at that time on social networks was Vine, then I recorded Tik Toks and what I ended up liking the most was the YouTube platform so I started my social networks there, the music emerged a year after I started with my social networks. Three years after this, I signed with my label, Sony Music, and this whole beautiful path of a lot of growth in every sense began.
I started at 17 years old, now I am 24 and very connected and happy with what I do, I really enjoy my work.
2. [RSK] In my research I saw that your career as an influencer stands out for content that is meaningful, responsible and, above all, complete, as well as fun, it is not common today to find influencers who care about becoming cultural, it was already a very successful career world leveled but you decided to prioritize your musical career, how did that need to prioritize this part come about?
It was always in the plans to do something else outside of social networks, I always felt that the mere fact of recording videos was a hobby that I had not seen myself in for the next 10 years.
Since I was little, was a super fan of all the popstars: Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Hannah Montana, I loved seeing how their careers had evolved, they started acting, children's shows and so on and then seeing them become superstars, I loved seeing that and It was what I always aspired to do, all that fantasy of pop and singing, acting and being on the carpets.
Beyond social networks, I liked everything it meant to be in the world of the music industry.
I was very scared and I said, I don't know if I'm going to get it? I! From Mazatlán, which is a super small city, the possibilities were really very few.
I started like this, I think that having been on social networks made me a very loyal fandom, that helped me grow a lot. Social media right now helps you expand, and that's how people could be in the world.
3. [RSK] You are known for being one of the few artists who has been able to make a successful transition from influencer to singer. I would like you to give us a tour of your musical works and how you feel right now when you see the evolution you have had in this journey.
Well, going back to everything, in fact, I have a colleague who also started on social media, but for some reason, she kind of turned me off for me in that area.
For example, María Belcera, who is an incredible artist, also started Argentina on social networks. If we go on a musical journey, when I started my musical career, it was really like they showed me a song proposal and if I liked it, I would record it and nothing more. No, I was very involved with that creative process, I listened to the song and I recorded, let's say 10 songs, I would choose two of my favorites and release them, without knowing if they were pop without paying attention to the genre.
But now that I have had much more preparation, I preserve that spontaneity. If I like it and I vibrate with the song, I connect and affirm myself - this is the song! -
The musical genre or anything else is still not relevant. Little by little I was putting together my team, associating my composers and my producers as trustworthy and above all recognizing my musical identity, my style.
It is very difficult to have your own sound when you are starting out, something that characterizes you. But now, after this last album that I finished recording, it is where I feel more complete.
4. [RSK] The contrast between the first album “Cambios de Luna” and the following “K23” is very noticeable, the style, the composition, even the vibe they transmit, the appearance of an avatar of yours of original creation is also curious, let's talk about this creative display.
Yes, for “K23” I was doing another super different contrast and I wanted the K23 "monita" avatar to accompany me in everything that was animation. At that time I was watching a lot of anime, so it became something I wanted to include. I was watching Demon Slayer, I was watching a lot of anime in general.
Fact, my sister is a super fan, she invited me to watch and I liked it a lot, at that time in 2022 I was very obsessed with the entire world of anime and although I had not yet gone to Japan, I wanted it to have this inspiration, I wanted something very different from what “Cambios de Luna” was because this one came with a very girly butterfly aesthetic.
5. [RSK] A woman used to working hard for her goals just like you, before the world only sees the success already achieved but it is clear that there is a very strong journey in which not everything was easy, for you personally what is the key to Have you been able to make this transition in a really successful way in which people not only see you as a powerful influence but as an artist with a serious musical proposal?
Mainly it is that I took my job very seriously and the people around you, your work team, also have a lot of influence. I work with producers and composers who are incredible and it is also the commitment you have to your life project.
“I never took it as a game, even when we did it for fun, we knew internally that it had to be done professionally, because we are not just friends working, some who were not on that wavelength left and despite that the conviction to do it doing things well was the key to what today we can say and show to the world” From the beginning we did things well, if you see my first videos and you realize that there was no budget, there wasn't much, but with very little we did the best possible.
Really, in this industry, success does not depend on everything you invest. There are people who invest too much, but success does not come. It's what you are, why you shine here, I see.
It was never really something intentional, as I tell you, it didn't exist for me because it was simply making music and I liked it.
At first I did a little bit of reggaeton, but I felt like it didn't have my essence, I saw that it didn't complete me any more and until the "CAMBIOS DE LUNA " something transcendental happened in my life, I was about to leave music, I was going through many personal processes and started making this album as a catharsis.
I started writing and I realized when I did it, when I composed, when I was part of the entire creative process, it made pop and ended up making pop. Then I saw that this is my path and maybe it is not the most viral thing that is at the moment, but it is what I feel most identified with, what I enjoy most when singing on stage.
The record company also told me, -you are pop, you are a popstar-. I questioned it, but little by little I was heading towards this whole world of the pop universe and that's how it happened.
7. [RSK] Let's talk about the creative process. You are releasing an album and we already heard “Tortura” which has also been a sensation not only because of the catchy beat, but also because of the very fresh art of the video, what is that creative process like when Kenia gets into the studio to make her music, her magic?
Entering the studio means dedicating a lot of time, I am in a process of two months of rest, that no longer exists in my life, I only dedicate myself to making music and it means reaching out to the composers, producers, saying that I want to start to write, I make it very personal, almost always the songs that I end up writing the most are ballads.
I also have another path, which is venturing into professional composition fields. I go with them, they have three, four composers in each room and the same producers in different rooms. I come to a studio, I concentrate on doing something, I define a genre.
I'm not as involved in these responsibilities anymore, but I'm still super involved in the world of directing my project creatively. These are my two ways of working.
8. [RSK] Music is clearly your focus now but you remain steadfast in supporting each of your businesses, how you direct your energy to have each of your responsibilities successful.
The reality is that I don't do it alone, I have a huge team of super “CHINGONAS” women working behind me and the truth is I am very happy with this team, we work for that goal that we have in common, to always give our best and to be doing the best within the companies, it is incredible to be able to work with all these girls and continue growing the businesses, the dreams and goals that we have in both the long and short term.
I'm very concentrated, suddenly, I have to be recording, I can hardly take the cell phone, suddenly I also have to go into a business meeting, there is no rest.
The truth is that because I like and enjoy each of the areas of my work, people can perceive it. The preparation is noticeable, the work is not improvised at all and it really impacts me a lot because we can do all this when we really have discipline.
9. [RSK] You got a stunning international tour last year. How was this experience?
My tour last year was in Mexico and the United States. We were only in these two countries. Obviously, my all-time favorite place to sing is always Mexico, because it is my home, where my audience is. It was very challenging to do a tour, even though my audience is abundant, we sold out in almost all the cities where I was, but let's say that in some way it is also starting from scratch, starting a new country, a new audience like the United States.
Now I will be in different places in Latin America, which has me a little nervous, excited, but very nervous at the same time, because I don't know what to expect. I am used to here in Mexico, my always loyal fans and now going to other countries. You're in for a big surprise.
10. [RSK] Having around 14 million followers from your life as an influencer and now as a singer, although you have always been a woman with an impeccable image, people still believe that they have the authority to express daring opinions about your personal life , to judge your decisions. How do you face these challenges? What allows you to continue putting on that kind, respectful face and that professional attitude that characterizes you?
Well, I think it's like everything, learning to focus on knowing who I am, all the artists suddenly have their not-so-positive comments and in the end we are in the public eye and people give their opinions openly. I think it's more about working internally and not allowing those comments to affect you. Comments will always exist, people who will criticize you or who will not like what you do will always exist, it does not matter if you do things well or not, the most important thing for me is how I process those comments. and I do not allow them to have strength in my personal construction.
So, if it doesn't affect me, it really is a mental health issue.
11. [RSK] You already told us you visited Japan and South Korea, we would love to know how memorable it was?
I was in Seoul. Yes, I went on vacation. I mean, I had been planning that trip for a whole year because I was dying to see Japan, my sister was dying to see Korea, so we took advantage of the moment.
We spent nine days in Japan and we spent a day and a half, two, in Seoul. My sister is a super fan of kpop and dramas. For my part, I really admire and would love to do something withNew Jeans. I really like the whole project they have and I have been a big fan of everything they have done for quite some time and in general all the groups there seem incredible to me, the videos, their way of working, which are very professional.
It's another universe for me, I really respect it a lot. It would be a very cool match to do some collaboration with a Korean group.
12. [RSK] Now, getting into the subject, what projects are coming up for you right now?
This is a year of full festivals. I will be at festivals all over the world. I have some in the United States, festivals here in Mexico and many appearances at fairs. And in Latin America too, I have many and we are also going to be in Europe.
It's going to be a year of a lot of international work.
We were very successful in Chile and Argentina. I was very nervous because it was the first time we performed in another country, other than Mexico and the United States, but I felt very excited. It was a very nice experience and the public responded with great empathy for my work.
13. [RSK] Well, let's talk about Tortura, an emblematic song from this album, what can we share with the RSK audience?
I think Tortura, for quite some time I wanted to work on the full essence of my music. After my album K23, there was a very special song called Malas Desiciones, which opened up another panorama for me of what I could do musically especially in Spanish.
I grew a lot with that previous song and I realized that it was really the sound that I wanted to absorb for my career in terms of the spirit of singing, it was a wonderful experience to record it.
Showing the public this identity was how my new album was born and Tortura is part of this new album, it is a single that excites me quite a bit because it is full pop, we have shown it to many listeners and everyone has loved it. My audience has reacted with a lot of love to this one.
At this moment the most important thing for me is people like my music, regardless of whether it has numbers and the reactions, I want you to be able to listen to my music and make you feel good.
“No matter where you are from, from any part of the world, music for me has helped me, it has saved me, it has made me connect with very beautiful people and I think that is part of what I also want to transmit to my audience, no matter from what part of the world. Is very nice to see how my followers, even though they are from different countries, from different cultures, we all connect and music has helped us to heal, to be connected, to transmit many emotions and I like that they feel identified with my music , make them happy and feel that beyond being an artist I am also human and I am one of them here working and fulfilling one of my dreams.”
