2011년부터 바쁘게 달려온 울랄라세션이 어느새 10주년을 맞이했다. 10년은 결코 짧은 시간이 아닌데 유독 울랄라세션에게는 그 이야기가 통하지 않는다. 긴 시간 봐 왔어도 그들은 어째 영 나이를 먹지 않는 느낌이다. 그것은 <슈퍼스타K>에서 보여준 재기 발랄한 잔영과 <싱어게인>에서의 멋진 모습이 혼재되어 뇌리에 저장되었기 때문이리라. 생각해 보면 울랄라세션은 언제나 무대에 있었고 그들의 인생도 무대를 향하고 있었다. 그리고 언제나 우리가 찾기 쉽도록 그들은 쉼 없이 무대를 점거하고 다녔다. 그 변함없는 부분이 바로 울랄라세션이 세월을 비껴간 이유가 아닐까. 장담컨대, 울랄라세션은 대한민국 가수 중에 무대 위가 가장 즐거운 사람들로 손꼽힐 것이다.
이제 그들은 또 다른 출발선에 서 있다. 새 앨범의 제목도 새로운 울랄라세션의 당찬 포부를 말하고 있다. 새로운 시도도 있다. 무대 위에서라면 무엇이든 가능한 울랄라세션은 과연 어떤 노래를 들고 돌아왔을까? 그리고 그들의 무대는 이제 어떤 모습일까?
1. [RSK] 안녕하세요, 울랄라세션! 롤링스톤 코리아와의 인터뷰로 만나 뵙게 되어 반갑습니다. 본격적인 인터뷰에 앞서 간단한 자기소개와 인사를 부탁드릴게요.
안녕하세요, 울랄라세션입니다! 오랜만의 활동으로 설레고 반갑습니다.
2. [RSK] 울랄라세션의 새 앨범 [Session.1 ‘U’]의 <I AM FINE>으로 2년 만에 컴백하신 것을 축하드립니다. 신규 프로젝트 ‘U.L.S Project’의 첫 번째 노래 <I AM FINE>의 곡 소개를 부탁드립니다.
프로젝트 이름 ‘U’에 담긴 것처럼 ‘너에게 하고 싶은 말’에 의미를 담았습니다. 울랄라세션의 시작부터 꼬리표처럼 따라다니던 비난과 억측에 대해 하고 싶은 말을 가사로 담아낸 곡입니다. 제목 그대로 ‘우리는 괜찮으니까, 신경 쓰지 말아 달라’는 의미입니다.
3. [RSK] 지금까지의 울랄라세션의 음악과는 색다른 비주얼과 비트의 댄스곡으로 컴백하셨어요. 새로운 도전을 결심하게 된 특별한 계기가 있을까요?
승일: 저희는 낯선 도전을 한 게 아니에요. (웃음) 처음부터 저희는 늘 항상 새로운 도전을 해왔어요. 다만 조금 달라진 게 있다면, 발라드에만 제한을 두고 진중하고 무게감 있는 에너지를 전달하려 하는 것, 혹은 댄스곡에서는 신나고 밝고 유쾌한 에너지에만 집중하는 등 제한을 두지 않으려고 했어요. 그런 제한 대신, ‘우리의 포부에만 집중하자’는 의도를 가지고 작업하다 보니, 많은 분께서 새로운 모습으로 봐주신 것 같습니다.
명훈: 모든 것이 새로운 요즘, 함께하게 된 AAA와의 새로운 모습이 필요하다는 생각을 했고 기존과는 달라진 울랄라세션의 음악과 퍼포먼스로 뭔가가 남는 무대를 만들고 싶은 마음입니다.
4. [RSK] 이번 앨범을 통해 울랄라세션과 메가 퍼포먼스 팀 제로백의 특별한 컬래버레이션을 볼 수 있었어요. 같이 작업하는 과정에서 기억에 남는 에피소드가 있었다면요?
안무 연습을 특히 많이 했는데, 하체를 많이 써서 많이 힘들었어요. 다들 나이가 나이인지라. (웃음)
5. [RSK] 새로운 장르로 돌아오신 만큼, 이번 앨범을 준비하는 과정에서 특별히 더 신경 썼던 부분이 있다면요?
승일: 저는 아무래도 무게감 있는 댄스곡은 처음이다 보니, 안무와 감정선에 모든 신경을 다 기울였던 것 같아요.
명훈: 개인 파트가 상당히 고음역대여서 목 관리하는 데 신경을 많이 썼어요. 특히 하체 운동을 틈틈이 했답니다.
도원: 안무적인 부분을 많이 신경 썼어요. 기존의 유쾌하고 재밌었던 퍼포먼스에서 벗어나 좀 더 시크하고 심도 있는 안무와 제스처에 포인트를 맞추었던 것 같습니다.

Ulala Session, Come What May on Stage
It is already Ulala Session’s 10th anniversary since their debut in 2011. A decade is no short span of time, but it doesn’t feel that way for Ulala Session. Although it’s been over ten years, the band doesn’t seem to be getting old, thanks to the memories of their brilliant performances on ”Superstar K” and ”Sing Again” that are engraved in our brains.
Come to think of it, Ulala Session is a group that’s lived its life in front of an audience. The band members were always on stage, which made it easy for us to find them. Maybe it’s their
steadfastness that has helped them withstand the test of time. I can assure you, Ulala Session is probably one of the happiest music groups on stage in Korea.
They are now standing at yet another starting line. Their new album title reflects their bold aspirations and desire to attempt new things. Come what may on stage, Ulala Session makes everything possible. What song have they prepared for us this time? And what kind of performances can we expect?
1. [RSK] Hello, Ulala Session! It’s a pleasure to meet you for this interview for Rolling Stone Korea. Before we begin, could you please introduce yourselves?
Hello, we are Ulala Session! We are very excited for our comeback!
2. [RSK] Congratulations on returning after a long two-year break with the song “I Am Fine” from your new album “Session.1 ‘U’.” Could you please tell us about the first song “I Am Fine” from your new project “U.L.S. Project”?
The “U” in the project name means “things I want to say to you.” The lyrics of this song contain what we want to say about the criticisms and speculations that have followed us around ever since Ulala Session debuted. As you can tell from the title, we are saying to the world, “We are okay, so don’t worry.”
3. [RSK] You’ve come back with a new look and dance music, which is different from your usual music style. Is there a reason you decided to take on this new challenge?
Seung il: It’s actually not a new challenge for us. (smiles) We have always been trying new things from the beginning. But, what’s different is that we tried to not limit ourselves to only one genre. For example, we are not limiting ourselves only to ballads that try to transmit seriousness and solemnness, or only to dance music where we focus solely on fun and light energy. Instead, we worked, absolutely “focused on our aspirations,” and I think many people feel and see that difference.
Myung hoon: Everything is new for us. We thought we needed something new as we’re just beginning with AAA (agency). With the new music and performance, we want to create a show that audience members will remember for a long time.
4. [RSK] On this album, we saw a special collaboration between Ulala Session and the mega performance team Zero Back. Were there any memorable incidents that happened during preparation?
We practiced the choreography a lot, and it was difficult because it required a lot from the lower body. And you know our age. (laugh)
5. [RSK] Is there anything in particular that you paid special attention to while preparing for your comeback with a new genre of music?
Seung il: For me, it’s my first serious dance music, so I focused all my attention on the choreo and on expressing emotions.
Myung hoon: My part is quite high-pitched, so I took special care of my throat. I also frequently worked on my lower body.
Do won: I paid special attention to the choreography. I focused more on the chic and intense gestures and tried to move away from our usual happy and fun performance.
