Even as the choreographer executed a sophisticated dance move with a strong body, what we remember vividly is a small girl who was dancing alongside and executed the choreography lightly and naturally, while displaying smooth dancing lines and overflowing energy. We were all captivated by the presence conveyed by her movements, which seemed to become one with the music, and we had no choice but to watch her grow continuously. From being the main vocalist and leader of a group that has produced many hit songs to standing alone on a stage, over the years, this little girl has been diligently expanding her language of music and dance.
She says that dancing is her life, and she wants to connect with the audience through her songs. Her story, the story of an artist who stands proudly in front of her fans with new music, begins here.
1. [RSK] Hello Min. I am glad to finally meet you and interview you through Rolling Stone Korea. Before we begin with the interview questions, can you introduce yourself briefly and greet us?
Hi. I am Min, and I am back with a new single, “Hit Me Up.”
2. [RSK] I'd like to hear about your recent status from you. How is everything?
After releasing my first single, “ONION,” in November last year, I received an offer to be cast in a Broadway musical and became involved in practice. Later, I returned to Korea and worked hard on music while preparing for my new single, “Hit Me Up,” which will be released on April 18. Moreover, since I enjoy playing games as a hobby, I started my own channel on Twitch and I communicate frequently with my fans.
3. [RSK] After you announced your comeback as a solo artist, you aroused a lot of anticipation from your fans through Instagram posts and more. How do you feel about that?
I thought a lot about how to let people know about my new single. When a friend told me that marketing would be even more effective if I wore a ring on the fourth finger of my left hand to promote this single, I thought it was a good idea, so I posted it on Instagram. I was so thankful for all the interest, which was more than I expected, and I think it will be remembered as a funny incident or episode.
4. [RSK] Through your solo debut song “ONION,” released in November last year, we were able to recognize your colorful charms as a solo artist. What new images will you portray through this new album “Hit Me Up”?
I am trying this hip-hop/R&B genre for the first time with this song. It’s a genre I usually listen to, and it was my first time filming a music video in an emotional atmosphere, so I think you'll be able to see a side of me that's different from what many people know. Moreover, JMIN of H1GHR MUSIC features in this song, and I think his voice and “Hit Me Up” are like a perfect match.
5. [RSK] I was impressed by the message "Everyone in the world has different sides, and we need to embrace and accept each other’s diversity," delivered through the last album, “ONION.” What message do you want to deliver to the public with this album, “Hit Me Up”?
If you like someone, be courageous and "hit them up"! That someone may be waiting for your call, just like in my song. As a solo artist, I want to be an artist who can move people with my voice and connect with them through my songs.
6. [RSK] Min, you are a vocalist with delicate yet lively tones, but you are also a powerful dancer who can grab everyone’s attention. In March last year, you posted a dance practice video with the phrase "trance," along with its meaning. In another interview, you said you feel alive when you dance. When I watch you dance, I am suddenly immersed in it and I feel the "trance" as well (laughter). Hence, I must ask, what does dancing mean to you?
Dancing is life to me. DANCE IS MY LIFE! I choreographed a “Hit Me Up” dance yesterday. Join the “Hit Me Up” challenge! I hope to display dazzling dancing moves in the next album. If so, the song will be titled "Trance." (laughter)
7. [RSK] Before the release of the song, you showed off your singing skills through MBC's Masked Singer, which aired on April 3. I'm curious to know about the process of preparing for the broadcast and I want to understand how it feels to have your voice heard by the fans through the stage.
It has been 6 years and 9 months since I appeared in The Masked Singer, so it was meaningful to me to make an appearance on the seventh anniversary. Moreover, I wanted to let my fans hear my voice before the release of “Hit Me Up.” It was a fun experience. My grandmother was so delighted to see me on one of her favorite shows, The Masked Singer, so it made me very happy.
8. [RSK] You have continued your activities as a musical actor with The Musical Boys over Flowers in 2017 and Super Lunatic in 2021. This time, I heard that you are going to challenge a Broadway musical with a K-pop theme. As you are at the heart of K-pop, I think the feeling of participating in K-Pop, a Broadway musical that even covers various social issues, will be new. Do you have any specific goals?
It is a great honor to introduce a musical on the theme of K-pop, which could be about my life, on Broadway, where people from all over the world come to see it. It is both overwhelming and stressful to be able to showcase Korean culture and art, such as K-pop, in New York as a Korean. I will work hard and put on a show that I could be proud of as a Korean before I return. Please give me your support!
9. [RSK] You seem to enjoy active hobbies such as skiing and biking. Now that you are busy preparing and working on your album, what kind of hobby do you enjoy to relax?
I have a dog, so I often go for walks with my dog, and I like to go to the best eateries. I try to exercise frequently. I also enjoy playing games, mainly Overwatch. Beta 2 is out and I'm waiting with anticipation. I like to play games, so I started my own Twitch channel a while ago. Please come and visit. It’s @Therealminnn. (Laughter)
10. [RSK] What would you like to say to the fans who have been waiting for Min as a singer for a long time?
I missed you so much. I want to see you soon to perform and communicate. I thank you and love you for being with me all this time.
11. [RSK] Thank you for agreeing to an interview with Rolling Stone Korea. Lastly, please tell us briefly about your impression of this interview and leave us with your final greetings.
This is my very first interview with Rolling Stone Korea. It is also my first interview about this album, and I think it made me reflect on myself a lot. I ask for your continued support in the future, and go, Rolling Stone Korea! Thank you so much. Love you!
