“New world!” 빅톤(VICTON)은 그들의 한결같은 단체 인사말처럼, 현재 K-pop의 영역 내에서 자신들의 세계를 구축하고 있다. 한승우, 강승식, 허찬, 임세준, 도한세, 최병찬, 정수빈 등 7명으로 구성된 빅톤은 2016년 데뷔 이후 ‘새로운 세상을 향한 목소리’라는 캐치프레이즈 아래 쉼없이 새로운 영역을 개척해 가고 있다. 

성공을 거둔 많은 K-pop 그룹처럼 빅톤의 이번 컴백작에도 영어 가사 버전의 타이틀곡이 실려 있다. 싱글 3집 [Chronograph]는 이제 해외 팬에게도 자신들의 이야기와 목소리를 온전히 전하겠다는 야심과 배려가 동시에 담겨 있다.

롤링스톤 코리아는 새 앨범 준비에 바빴을 빅톤의 멤버 3명, 세준, 한세, 수빈을 만나 신작에 대한 이야기를 듣고, 더불어 그들의 사랑인 팬클럽 ‘앨리스’에 대한 애정도 동시에 확인해 볼 수 있었다.

안녕하세요. 빅톤(VICTON) 세준, 한세, 수빈 님, 만나 뵙게 되어 영광입니다! 먼저 자기소개와 간략한 인사말을 부탁드리겠습니다!

세준: 안녕하세요! 빅톤의 임세준입니다!

한세: 안녕하세요! 빅톤의 도한세입니다!

수빈: 안녕하세요! 빅톤의 정수빈입니다. 이렇게 인사드릴 수 있어서 기분이 좋아요!

1년이란 공백기를 지나 [Chronograph]이라는 싱글 3집으로 돌아왔어요. 준비하는 모든 과정이 소중했겠지만 멤버마다 느낀 바가 다를 것 같아요. 이번 앨범을 준비하며 각자 기억에 남는 일이 있었나요?

세준: 앨범을 준비하면서, 조금이라도 어색한 부분이 있으면 수정하고 또 수정하면서 정말 바쁘게, 정신없이 앨범 준비를 했던 게 생각납니다.

한세: 타이틀 곡의 안무 수정이 많았어요. 연습실에서 끊임없이 연습했던 일이 가장 기억에 남는 것 같습니다.

수빈: <Chronograph>의 영어 버전을 녹음하던 당시, 제가 독한 감기에 걸려서 상태가 좋지 못했어요. 그런데 음원 마스터 기한이 얼마 안 남아서 그날 꼭 녹음을 마쳐야 했던 상황이라, 무척이나 집중해서 녹음했던 일이 가장 기억에 남네요!

싱글 3집인 [Chronograph] 앨범에는 전 세계의 많은 글로벌 팬이 반길 만한 소식이 있었죠. (웃음) 처음으로 정식 앨범에 타이틀곡의 영어 버전을 공개하며 세계적으로 더욱 활발히 활동할 빅톤을 예고하는 듯했는데요, 앞으로 빅톤이 꼭 도전해 보고 싶은 세계적인 무대가 있나요? 

세준: ‘징글볼’ 투어에 참여해 보고 싶습니다! 해외에도 빅톤을 기다리시는 앨리스분이 많이 계신 것 같았어요. 그래서 팬분들과 좋은 추억을 만들기 위해 빅톤이 꼭 찾아가고 싶습니다!

한세: 세계적인 무대에 서 보는 것도 좋지만, 코로나19가 하루빨리 종식되어 한국은 물론이고 여러 나라를 다니며 투어를 하고 싶습니다!

수빈: 많은 그룹이 같은 마음이겠지만, 월드 투어에 꼭 도전해 보고 싶어요! 유럽 투어, 아시아 투어를 했을 때 느꼈는데, 전 세계의 팬을 만나는 건 정말 설레는 일인 것 같아요. (웃음)

현재 전 세계적으로 K-pop을 소비하는 국가가 더 늘어나고 있어요. 그만큼 다양한 콘셉트의 그룹들이 생겨나고 여러 장르의 음악이 매년 창작되면서 색다른 무대 퍼포먼스도 하나의 콘텐츠가 되기도 하죠. 그렇다면 빅톤이 생각하는 빅톤만의 장점이나 매력은 무엇인가요? 

세준: 저희 빅톤은 소화할 수 있는 음악의 장르가 굉장히 다양하다고 생각합니다. 앨범마다 다양한 콘셉트를 시도해 왔습니다. 다양한 장르를 소화할 수 있도록 꾸준한 노력하는 점도 저희의 매력이자 장점이라고 생각해요!

한세: 저희 음악은 장르가 다양하다 보니, 누구나 취향에 맞는 곡을 골라서 들을 수 있을 것 같습니다.

수빈: 이번 앨범으로 이야기하자면요, <Chronograph>는 저희가 생각하는 가치관을 음악에 녹여낸 것 같아요. 그래서 그 부분이 장점이고 매력이라는 생각이 들어요. 이번 앨범을 통해 빅톤의 음악이 가진 매력을 확인해 주셨으면 좋겠습니다.

 

한세 님은 작년 9월에 솔로 활동을 성공적으로 마무리 하셨는데요, 음악 활동에 있어 꾸준히 자신을 움직이게 하는 원동력이나 자극제는 무엇인가요? 

한세: 앨범 작업을 함께해 주신 분들, 새롭게 알게 되고 만나게 되는 아티스트 분들을 보면서 나도 더 열심히 해서 멋있는 모습을 많이 보여드려야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

수빈 님, 최근까지도 수준 높은 연기 활동을 꾸준히 이어 오셨어요. 음악과 연기, 다양한 방면으로 좋은 달란트를 많이 갖고 계신 것 같아요. 빅톤의 활동과 별개로 연기 활동을 할 때는 스스로 어떤 즐거움과 도전을 얻는 것 같나요?

수빈: 요즘 들어 연기에 좀 더 진득하게 임해 보면 어떨까라는 생각이 들었어요! 이번에 EBS1의 <하트가 빛나는 순간>이라는 드라마를 찍으면서, 좋은 제작진과 즐겁게 촬영하다 보니 욕심이 더 생기더라고요!

세준 님은 음악 활동 외의 아티스트적인 면모를 필름 카메라로 직접 촬영한 사진을 모아둔 인스타그램 계정을 통해 또 한 번 확인할 수 있었어요. 사진은 추억을 기록한다고 하잖아요? 만약 살면서 단 3장의 사진만 찍을 수 있다면 어떤 장면을 담고 싶으세요?

세준: 단 3장이라면… 무척 고민되는데요! 제가 환하게 웃는 모습, 눈 내린 들판 그리고 저의 카메라가 담긴 사진을 담아보고 싶네요. (웃음)

Like other successful K-pop groups, VICTON made a comeback with an English version of their title track. In their third single, “Chronograph,” each member’s stories and voices can be heard and appreciated by global fans while also displaying just how inspiring they are.

 SeJun, Hanse, and SuBin, who were very instrumental in making this new album, took the time to be interviewed by Rolling Stone Korea. They shared their stories about their recent work, as well as being tested on just how much affection they have for their beloved fan club, “ALICE.”

 

Hello, VICTON! it’s an honor to meet you. Before we begin, could you please introduce yourselves and say hello to the subscribers?

SeJun: Hello! I’m Lim SeJun of VICTON!

Hanse: Hello! I’m Do Hanse of VICTON!

SuBin: Hello! I’m Jung SuBin of VICTON. It feels great to be able to greet you all!

After a year of being on hiatus, you’ve returned with your third single album, “Chronograph.” Every moment of the process must’ve been important. But, it must’ve been a different experience for each member. Is there a particularly memorable moment you can share with all of us?

SeJun: While working on the album, I remember being really busy and absent-minded with editing and kept having to re-edit parts that were slightly awkward in any way.

Hanse: There were a lot of adjustments made to the choreography for the title song. I mostly remember practicing day in and day out in the dance studio.

SuBin: I had a terrible case of the flu and was in rough shape on the day I had to record my part for the English version of “Chronograph.” We had to finish recording on that day because the deadline for the mastering process was approaching. I remember just how hard I had to concentrate while I was recording!

There was some welcoming news for many of your fans worldwide regarding the third single album, “Chronograph.” For the first time, an English version was made for the title track on the official album, possibly hinting that there may be some global activities for VICTON. In the future, where are some places in this world that you would like to perform, and why?

SeJun: We would like to be part of the Jingle Ball Tour! We know there are ALICEs out there waiting for us. VICTON will go there and make wonderful memories with the fans!

Hanse: Performing on a global scale sounds great. I hope COVID ends soon so that we can tour around Korea and other countries of this world!

SuBin: I am sure every group feels the same, but I really want to do a world tour! During our Europe and Asia tours, I was able to experience the joy of being able to meet fans from all over the world. (Laughter).

Currently, more and more countries worldwide are becoming consumers of K-Pop. In that aspect, more and more groups with various concepts and music genres are created every year. Unprecedented performances on stages have become their own genre. With that in mind, what are some of VICTON’s strengths and appeal?

SeJun: We, VICTON, can execute many different music genres. We’ve tried new concepts for every single one of our albums. I believe that working hard to properly perform a variety of music are traits of strength and the appeal that we have!

Hanse: Since we do all types of music, we can cater to most everyone. Fans can pick and choose what they want to listen to.

SuBin: For this album, “Chronograph,” we’ve really infused our thoughts and values into the songs. That’s the biggest strength that we have. I hope all of you will be able to experience these qualities in VICTON’s newest album.

Hanse, you completed your successful career as a solo artist last September. What inspires and motivates you to continue with your music career?

Hanse: I’m motivated by those that take part in creating the album. Meeting new artists inspires me to work hard to reveal the best of who I am.

Subin, you’ve continued to show some great acting scales even recently. You’re very versatile and talented in both music and acting. Aside from your career with VICTON, what are some of the joys and challenges you experience when acting?

SuBin: These days, I’ve been seriously thinking about acting! I had fun working with such a great production team on the EBS drama, “The Moment the Heart Shines.” That kindled new desires in me!

SeJun, aside from your music career, you have a separate Instagram account for your photo albums that are taken with a film camera. They say that pictures are records of memories. What would you want to capture if you could only take three pictures?

SeJun: Only three photos… Wow, this is very difficult! A picture of me with a big smile, a field covered in snow, and a photo of my camera. (Laughter)
