단 몇 단어로 오드리 누나를 설명하기란 쉽지 않다. 특히 그가 무대에서 공연할 때, 그를 외면하기란 더욱더 어려울 것이다. ‘오드리 추’가 본명인 22살의 싱어송라이터이자 떠오르는 아티스트인 오드리 누나. 관객의 시선을 끄는, 그의 매력은 흘러넘친다.

한국에서 미국으로 이민 온 부모님으로부터 태어난 오드리 누나는 뉴저지에서 자랐으며, 현재는 에너지 가득한 뉴욕에서 독특한 음악을 만들고 있다. 그가 만든 소울 충만한 컨템포러리 R&B에는 마음을 편안하게 해 주는 달콤한 목소리와 황홀하고 서정적인 가사, 몸을 들썩일 수밖에 없도록 하는 비트가 들어 있다. 그래서 그런지 오드리 누나에게는 전염성 강한 에너지가 있다. 이 에너지는 그녀의 자신감과 야망, 잠재력을 그대로 보여준다.

오드리와의 인터뷰에서 우리는 다재다능한 크리에이티브로 살아가는 그의 삶을 자세히 엿볼 수 있었다.

올해 5월에 나온 데뷔 앨범인 [a liquid breakfast]에 이어서 좋은 활동을 이어가고 계신데, 영감의 원천이 무엇인가요?

저는 주로 공상을 하면서 아이디어를 많이 얻어요. 광고, 영화, 책 등 하루 동안 우연히 보고 들은 것들에 대해 생각해요. 특히 만화, 친구나 낯선 사람과의 대화, 사진에서 영감을 많이 받아요. 일상의 모든 것들이 영감의 원천이죠.

창작을 시작하기 전에 꼭 하는 일이나 특별한 루틴이 있을까요?

딱히 정해진 건 없어요. 작업을 위해 맛있는 음식을 먹는 것도 중요하고, 좋은 음악을 듣는 것도 중요해요. 낮에 창문으로 들어오는 햇살도요. 물론 제 뇌는 밤이 돼야 완전히 깨어나지만요.

요즘 가장 자주 듣는 노래 세 곡을 꼽는다면요? 그리고 같이 작업하고 싶은 사람이 있을까요? 음악이든, 예술이든 어떤 분야든지요.

제임스 블레이크의 <Life Is Not The Same>, 라디오헤드의 <Nude>, 테이 이와의 <Keeps>. 이렇게 세 곡이요. 그리고 언젠가 의상과 관련해 서혜인 씨와 작업하고 싶어요.

대중 그리고 한국에 있는 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지가 있나요?

즐거운 일을 하시고, 자유를 찾아 나아가세요. 제 아버지는 이런 말씀을 하셨어요. “꿈이 사라지면, 인생도 사라진다.” 이 말이 어린 저의 마음에 와닿았고, 지금 제가 이 자리에 있는 이유가 됐어요. 그리고 한국에서 제 노래를 듣는 모든 분께 정말 감사드려요. 

한국계 미국인 아티스트로서, 가까운 미래에 이루고 싶은 일들이 있나요?

미국을 비롯해 전 세계 여러 아티스트들과 더 많은 작업을 하고 싶어요. 특히 비주얼 스페이스(visual space) 쪽에는, 제가 부러워하는 재능과 작품을 가진 한국인 아티스트들이 많아요. 기대되네요.

오드리 누나의 새로운 음악과 향후 활동을 기대해 본다. 머지않아 누구나 그의 이름을 알게 될 것이다.

Carving Many Lanes: Audrey Nuna

It would be hard to describe Audrey Nuna in just a few words. If she walked onto a stage and started performing, it would be even harder to ignore her. But why would you? Born Audrey Chu, the 22-year old singer-songwriter, is an up-and-coming artist that you want to keep your eyes on.
 

Born and raised in New Jersey in the United States by immigrant parents from South Korea, and now living in bustling New York City, she makes music that is a bit of everything. It is soulful contemporary R&B with honey-sweet vocals that bring you comfort, hypnotizing lyrical wordplay, and beats that make you want to move. She transmits infectious energy that reflects her confidence, ambition, and potential.

Our interview with Audrey brought us many great insights into her life as a multi-talented creative artist.


 

On top of releasing your debut album, "A Liquid Breakfast," in May of this year, you've been putting out so much good stuff these days. What are your sources of inspiration?

I get a lot of my ideas while daydreaming, just thinking about random things I see and take in throughout the day, like commercials, movies, and books. I'm really inspired by cartoons, conversations with friends and strangers, and photography. A lot of everyday things inspire me.

Could you share some of your creative processes with us? Are there any "must haves" or routines before starting?

It's messy. Good meals are important to my process, as is good music and a window letting in natural light if it's daytime. My brain comes fully alive at night, though.

What are your top three most played songs right now? Is there someone you would like to work with, whether it's music, art, or something else?

"Life Is Not The Same" by James Blake, "Nude" by Radiohead, and "Keeps" by Tay Iwar. I would love to work with Hyein Seo on clothes.

What would you like your audience to learn from you? Do you have a message for your fans in Korea?

Do what excites you, and push yourself to find freedom. My dad used to always say to me: “꿈이 사라지면, 인생도 사라진다 (If your dreams disappear, then your life disappears too)." That really stuck with me as a kid, and it's the reason I am the way I am. Thank you to everyone in Korea listening to the songs.

What are some things you're looking forward to in the future when it comes to your career as a Korean American artist?

I am excited to work with more artists from the United States and the rest of the world. Especially in a visual space, there are a lot of Korean artists whose work and talent I admire.

We're looking forward to the music (and just about anything else) that Audrey Nuna creates. It's only a matter of time before everybody knows her name.
