영원히 멈추지 않는 트랙처럼, DJ 레이든

프로토콜레코딩스의 수장인 니키 로메로의 추천 이후로 레이든의 명성과 실력은 DJ 팔로워 사이에서도 늘 화제의 중심에 있었다. 평창올림픽 폐막식 무대에서도 그 모습을 드러낸 세계적인 DJ는, 소녀시대 유리와의 작업과 연이 닿았는지 대한민국 DJ 최초로 SM엔터테인먼트와의 계약도 이루어졌다.

이 거칠 것 없는 DJ가 첫 미니앨범 [Love Right Back]을 발표하며 추운 계절에 열기를 퍼부어줄 준비를 마쳤다. 롤링스톤 코리아와 함께 그 열기를 같이 느껴보자.

1. [롤링스톤 코리아 이하 (RSK)] 안녕하세요. 레이든 님, 롤링스톤 코리아와의 인터뷰를 통해 이야기 나누게 되어 영광입니다. 인터뷰에 앞서 간단한 소개 및 인사 부탁드릴게요!

안녕하세요 DJ 겸 아티스트 레이든입니다. 롤링스톤 코리아 구독자 여러분 반갑습니다.

2. [RSK] 첫 미니 앨범 [Love Right Back]을 발표하셨는데요. 국내외에 다양한 해외 팬들 사이에서도 반응이 좋습니다. 앨범에 대한 소개 부탁드립니다.

저의 첫 미니 앨범인 만큼 아껴두었던 곡들을 수록했습니다. 특히 피처링 진이 강력한 라인업인데요, 

NCT의 태일 씨, 래퍼 릴보이 씨, 여자아이들 미연 씨, WayV의 샤오쥔 씨, 래퍼 pH-1 씨, 위키미키의 최유정 씨 그리고 Nino Lucarelli 씨께서 참여해 주셨습니다. 

R&B, 인디 댄스, 디스코, 뭄바톤 등 여러 장르의 느낌을 받으실 수 있는데요, 각 트랙들의 분위기는 다르지만 제가 DJ인 만큼 일렉트로닉 사운드를 기반으로 결합한 것이 특징이기도 합니다.

타이틀곡 <Love Right Back> 은 전작 <Yours (feat. 이하이, 창모)>의 연장선이라고 할 수 있는 가사와 곡조를 이어가는 컨셉으로 제작하였습니다. 이별을 겪고 아쉬움 보다는 앞으로의 밝은 미래와 희망을 갖자는 내용인데요, 태일 씨와 릴보이 씨의 환상적인 케미가 빛을 발한 잔잔하지만 신나는 곡입니다. 

지금 코로나 세상으로 많은 분들이 힘든 시간을 겪고 계신데 이 곡을 통해서 힘을 드릴 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 

3. [RSK] 울트라 마이애미에서 5년 연속 공연하셨죠. 아시아 예술가에게는 큰 성취이자 드문 일이기도 한데요, 이 경험으로부터 새롭게 배운 점이나 다음에 기대해볼 만한 것들은 어떤 게 있을까요? 

아무래도 일렉트로닉 뮤직 축제를 대표하는 페스티벌 중 하나이고 온라인 생중계를 하기 때문에 긴장도 많이 했지만 아시아에도 훌륭한 DJ가 있다는 걸 입증해 보이고 싶어서 정말 열심히 준비했습니다. 해외 관객과 소통하는 법도 여러 경험을 쌓아가며 터득했고 자연스럽게 나중에는 더 위로 올라가 밤 타임에 공연하고 싶다는 목표를 갖게 되었습니다. 이런 경험들이 바탕이 되어 2018 평창 올림픽 폐회식에서도 공연을 할 수 있는 기회가 생겼던 것 같습니다.

4. [RSK] 작년에 찬열, 이하이 & 창모와 함께 메이저 콜라보 히트곡 <Yours>를 발표하셨는데, 레이든 님이 콜라보 하고 싶은 해외 DJ, 보컬, 래퍼가 있으신지요?

너무 많은데요, DJ Snake, Zedd, Marshmello, ZHU, Halsey, Khalid, Lil Baby등 너무 많네요! (웃음)

5. [RSK] 레이든 님은 다양한 악기를 능숙하게 다루시는데, 녹음 세션이 있을 때 선호하는 악기가 있나요?

제 전공이 원래 일렉트릭 기타여서 기타를 가장 선호합니다. 아무래도 가장 저 다운 사운드인 것 같아요. 제가 원래 록 음악을 제일 좋아해서 지금하고 있는 팝이나 일렉트로닉 음악에도 잘 들어 보시면 록 음악의 요소들을 많이 찾으실 수 있습니다. 

6. [RSK] 레이든 님이 생각하시는 최고의 DJ/프로듀서 TOP 3는? 덧붙여 언젠가 해외 진출할 한국의 DJ/프로듀서들을 위한 조언 한 말씀 부탁드립니다.

Calvin Harris - 언더그라운드와 메이저 음악을 매우 잘 조합하는 것 같습니다. 매번 대단한 라인업의 피처링 조합도 저에게 많은 영감을 줘요. 록 음악의 요소도 많이 느낄 수 있어서 제 스타일입니다. (웃음)

DJ Snake – 하드 한 음악부터 소프트한 음악까지 다양한 방면에서 잘하고 어떤 음악을 하던 그에 맞는 피처링 조합을 너무 잘하는 것 같습니다. 항상 히트곡을 내는 걸 보면 대중이 무엇을 좋아하는지 잘 알고 있는 듯합니다.  

Swedish House Mafia - 일렉트로닉 뮤직 씬에서 Daft Punk를 제외하고는 DJ/ 프로듀서 중에서 제가 가장 좋아하는 그룹입니다. 하우스 음악을 이렇게까지 멋있고 장점을 극한으로 이끌어내는 센스가 대단합니다.

세 명 모두 카리스마가 대단하고, 디제잉도 화려한 기술 없이 기본적인 믹싱만으로도 정말 뛰어나요. 음악의 내용이나 흐름, 스토리가 있는 셋이더라고요. 최근에는 오랜 공백을 끝내고 복귀하면서 The Weeknd와 싱글을 내는 것을 보고 ‘역시는 역시다!’라고 느꼈습니다. 멤버 중에 Steve Angello와는 개인적으로도 친분이 있는데 제가 루키 시절 따라다니면서 정말 많이 배웠습니다. DJ 아티스트로서의 제게 멘토 같은 존재입니다.

7. [RSK] 지금까지 롤링스톤 코리아와의 인터뷰 응해 주셔서 감사합니다. 인터뷰를 통해 레이든 님에 대해 더 알아갈 수 있는 시간이어서 좋았습니다. 마지막으로 간단한 인터뷰 소감 부탁드릴게요!

 Like a Track Never Ending, DJ Raiden

After a recommendation from Nicky Romero (leader of Protocol Recordings), Raiden's fame and skills has always been in the center of DJ followers' attention. He even performed at the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Olympics, and perhaps it was then when he got connected through working with Yuri of Girls' Generation that he became the first DJ to get signed with SM Entertainment.

This ruthless DJ released his first mini album [Love Right Back] and is done preparing to bring heat in this cold season. Let's feel it together with Rolling Stones Korea.

1. [Rolling Stones Korea (below as RSK)] Hello Raiden, it's an honor to share your story through this interview with Rolling Stones Korea. Please greet the readers before we get started!

Hi I'm Raiden, a DJ and artist. It's a pleasure to meet you all through Rolling Stones Korea.

2. [RSK] You released your first mini alubm [Love Right Back]. It has received good reception from fans in Korea and international as well. Please introduce your album.

As it's my first mini album, I included tracks that I have been cherishing. The feauturing line up is solid with appearnces from NCT's Taeil, rapper lIlBOI, (G)I-DLE's Miyeon, Wayv's Xiaojun, rapper pH-1, Weki Miki's Yoo-jung and Nino Lucarelli.

R&B, indie dance, disco, moombathon and other genres are present, and the tracks have different moods but since I'm a DJ, it's special that it's based of electronic sounds.

The title track <Love Right Back> is an extension of my previous song <Yours (feat. LEE HI, Changmo)> produced with a continued concept of lyrics and melody.

The message is to step into a bright future with hope rather than being down due to a breakup. Taeil and lIlBOI's fantastic chemistry shines through this soft but exciting song. Many people in the world are in difficult times because of covid and I hope strength is given through this song.

3. [RSK] You performed 5 years straight at Ultra Miami. It's a huge and rare accomplishment as an Asian artist - were there new things you learned through this experience or anything we may expect?

It is in fact one of the representative electronic music festivals and it was streamed online so I was nervous, but I wanted to prove that there is a great DJ in Asia so I prepared so hard. I learned how to connect with a non-Korean audience and made a goal to go up on at stages during the night timetable. I think these sort of experiences are what alowed me to perform at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics' closing ceremony.

4. [RSK] Last year you released the major hit collaboration <Yours> with Chanyeol, LEE HI, and Changmo.  Is there a DJ, vocalist or rapper that you would like to collaborate with?

There are way too many: DJ Snake, Zedd, Marshmello, ZHU, Halsey, Khalid, Lil Baby and more.

5. [RSK] You are able to handle multiple instruments, what do you prefer when there's a recording session?

My major is electric guitar so I favor it the most. I think it's the sound that is most like me. I love rock music the most so if you listen carefully to the pop and electric music I do, you can find many elements of rock.

6. [RSK] Who are your Top 3 best DJs or producers? Please give some advice to DJs and producers in Korea that want to make the global market someday.

Calvin Harris - He mixes underground and major music very well. His featuring consists of an amazing line up every time that inspires me. There's a lot of rock to it too which is my style. (laugh)

DJ Snake – He is versatile from hard to soft music and which ever music he does, he is so good at bringing features together. He always makes hits so it seems he knows what the masses like.

Swedish House Mafia - Other than Daft Punk in the electronic music scene, they're the group I like the most amongst DJs/producers. They have great sense to bring the best out of house music to make it so cool.

All three have great charisma and even without fancy DJing their basic mixes are extremely good. Their sets have a story in the flow and content of the songs. After a long hiatus, they recently released a single with The Weeknd and I said "I knew it!" I know Steve Angello personally and I learned so much by following him around during my rookie days. He's like a mentor to me as a DJ artist.

7. [RSK] Thank you for interviewing with Rolling Stones. It was a good time to get to know Raiden more. Please give your final remarks!
