성인이 된 이후의 삶이 큰 고난으로 점철된 것은 아니지만, 그의 어린 시절은 또 다른 이야기를 들려준다. 그는 갱단 문화가 자리한 옛 잉글우드에서 자랐다. 아버지가 그가 여덟 살이 될 때까지 수감 중이었기에 여러 학교를 전전했다. “어린 시절의 전반부는 단절된 느낌이었어요. 부모님이 모두 일하셔서 항상 저희를 돌볼 수 없었고, 그래서 종종 거리에서 시간을 보내야 했죠.”

젊은 아티스트들이 꿈에 전부를 걸어야 하는지, 아니면 그처럼 안정적인 직업을 먼저 확보해야 하는지에 대한 질문에 디 스모크는 단호하면서도 균형 잡힌 시각을 전했다. “수입은 있어야 해요. 음악에 올인하되, 올인이라는 게 다른 걸 배우지 않는다는 뜻은 아니에요.” 그는 음악을 전심으로 추구하는 것은 중요하지만, 예술에 생계를 전적으로 의존하는 것은 현명하지 않을 수 있다고 강조했다. 예술은 경제적 압박이 아니라 진정성과 열정에서 비롯되어야 한다는 것이다. “일은 명예로운 거예요. 햄버거를 뒤집는 일이라도 필요하다면 기꺼이 해야죠. 거기에 부끄러움은 없어요.”

10년 동안 그는 교직과 음악 활동 사이의 섬세한 균형을 유지했다. 안정적인 직업과 예술적 꿈을 동시에 추구하기 위해서는 막대한 절제력과 회복탄력성이 필요했다. “밤새 스튜디오에 있다가 일어나 학교에 가서 가르치고, 임시 교원 자격을 유지하기 위해 대학원 과정까지 병행했어요.” 육체적으로도 강도 높은 일정이었지만, 그 노력은 의미 있는 결과로 이어졌다. 그는 결국 전업 뮤지션이라는 꿈을 이루었을 뿐 아니라, 과거 제자들과도 친구처럼 연락을 이어가고 있다. 그중 일부는 현재 NBA나 NFL에서 활동하고 있다. 음악과 함께 쌓아온 관계의 힘을 보여주는 대목이다.

스눕 독(Snoop Dogg)과의 관계에 관해 이야기할 때 그는 웃으며 말했다. 스눕은 마치 삼촌 같은 존재라고. 무대 위에서는 진지하거나 위압적으로 보일 수 있지만, 무대 밖에서는 ‘가족처럼 느껴지고, 따뜻하고, 늘 곁에 있는 사람’이라고 표현했다. 그는 반다 MS(Banda MS)와 협업한 <Qué Maldición>에서 스눕 독을 위해 스페인어 가사를 썼다. “그가 스페인어로 녹음하는 모습을 보는 건 제가 본 것 중 가장 재미있는 장면 중 하나였어요.” 언어 장벽이 있었지만, 스눕은 절대 주저하지 않았다. 실수를 해도 개의치 않고 계속 시도했다.

D Smoke’s rise in the music world might look seamless from the outside, but his story exemplifies how to chase your passions wisely while keeping a grounded and secure life. A UCLA graduate in Spanish literature, he could have taken a straightforward path in education, something many would consider a stable, respectable career. And he did, stepping into teaching right after college. Yet, all the while, music had always been his calling.

He had been writing songs for other artists in college, however the road was far from predictable. Opportunities came and went, sometimes a handful of placements in a year, other times nothing at all. Around the same time, a teaching position opened up at Inglewood High School. It wasn’t something he had actively pursued, but the role fit naturally into his life, and he enjoyed it. Accepting the job didn’t mean stepping away from music, it was a safety net.

While D Smoke’s adulthood may not have been filled with hardships, his childhood tells a different story. He grew up in old Inglewood, surrounded by gangs and all that stuff. He moved through multiple schools while his father was in jail until he was eight. “The first half of my childhood was disjointed. We were in the streets sometimes because both my parents were working, and they couldn’t always chauffeur us around.”

When asked whether young artists should dive fully into their dreams or first secure a steady job like he did, D Smoke shared a mix of direct advice and perspective. “They should get an income. Go all in on the music, but all in doesn’t mean you don’t learn other things.” He emphasized that while pursuing music wholeheartedly is important, it’s also wise not to rely entirely on art for income. Art should come from honesty and passion, not from financial necessity. “Work is honorable, so always be willing to work. There’s no shame in flipping burgers if that’s what it calls for.”

For ten years, D Smoke managed the delicate balance between teaching and building his music career. Pursuing both a stable job and his artistic dreams demanded immense discipline and resilience. “I was in the studio all night, get up, go teach, then trying to be in the grad school program so I could keep my temporary credential,” he recalls. The workload was intense and physically demanding, but the effort paid off in meaningful ways. Not only has he achieved his dream of becoming a full-time musician, he also remains close with many of his former students, keeping in touch like friends, and some of whom now work in the NBA or NFL, a testament to the relationships and impact he nurtured alongside his musical journey.

When talking about his relationship with Snoop Dogg, he laughed and said that Snoop has a way of making you feel like he’s your uncle. On stage, you might think Snoop seems serious or even intimidating, but offstage, “He feels like family, very present, warm and involved,” D Smoke says. He wrote Spanish lyrics for Snoop Dogg on the song Qué Maldición with Banda MS. “Watching him record in Spanish was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen,” he recalls. Despite the language barrier, Snoop never let it stop him, he would keep trying, unashamed of mistakes and always willing to go again.

The biggest lesson D Smoke has learned from Snoop is clear: “Laugh it off and keep going, just keep going. Every mistake he made didn’t really bother him.

What initially seemed like a smooth path, moving from a teaching job to a music career, is anything but easy. D Smoke needed to handle two worlds at once: maintaining his position as a teacher while pouring his nights into music. It was this extraordinary commitment and perseverance that gave him the opportunity to take that leap, earn recognition, and ultimately succeed.

If you want an ordinary life, keeping a dependable job is enough. But if you want to do something greater, you have to make the leap, juggling your security alongside your dreams. That’s where the true challenge and the true reward lie.
