2007년 영화 단역으로 배우 생활을 시작한 이주연은 현재 영화와 드라마에서 주·조연을 오가며 극에 생동감을 불어넣는 주요한 배우로 자리매김했다. 그녀의 매력은 시간이 흐를수록 깊이를 더해갔다. 20대에 넘치는 에너지를 바탕으로 극에 활력을 불어넣었다면 30대가 된 지금은 성숙함까지 더해져 스토리라인의 중요 부분을 믿고 맡길 수 있는 믿음직한 배우로 성장했다.
 

뚜렷한 이목구비가 자아내는 화려한 이미지와 달리 이주연이라는 배우의 연기를 논할 때 가장 먼저 꺼내게 되는 이야기는 ‘자연스러움’이다. 때로 우리는 영화나 드라마에서 에너지 과잉으로 인한 배우의 과장된 연기를 목격하는데 그녀는 더할 것도 뺄 것도 없는, 작품에 딱 알맞은 에너지 조절로 자연스럽게 씬에 녹아드는 모습을 보여준다. 자연스러운 연기와 연출이 강점인 <응답하라> 시리즈에서의 연속 카메오 출연은 이러한 그녀의 장점을 제작진이 인지하고 있음을 보여주는 사례다.
 

2020년까지 드라마와 영화를 오가며 맹활약했다면, 2021년에는 연극 무대에서도 그 빛을 발했다. 연극 <스페셜 라이어>를 통해 2016년 <서툰 사람들> 이후 5년만에 카메라가 아닌 무대 위에 올라 흔들림 없는 연기력을 과시했다.
 

TV, 극장, 연극 무대 곳곳에서 우리는 그녀를 확인할 수 있다. 하지만 우리는 아직 그녀의 모든 것을 알지 못한다. 마치 무한한 매장량을 자랑하는 금광처럼 파도파도 끝없이 나오는 그녀의 가능성 때문이다. 그녀를 만나는 모든 무대가 늘 새로운 것도 바로 이 때문이리라. 그래서 더 늦기 전에 롤링스톤 코리아가 이주연의 매력 발굴에 나섰다. 그리고 이제 막, 이 엄청난 금광의 입구에 다다랐다.

안녕하세요, 이주연 님. 인터뷰에 앞서 롤링스톤 코리아 구독자분들께 인사 부탁드립니다.

안녕하세요, 배우 이주연입니다. 롤링스톤 코리아에서는 처음 인사드리는데요. 만나 뵙게 되어 반갑습니다.

올해 5월 씨제스 엔터테인먼트로 이적해 새로운 배우, 가수 동료분들과 함께하게 되셨습니다.

좋은 배우들이 많고 종합적인 경험이 많은 곳이라 씨제스와 함께하게 되었는데요. 아직 직원분들과 알아가고 있는 단계지만 다들 세심하고 제 이야기도 많이 들어주려고 하셔서 편안해요. 또 많은 선후배분들과 함께하게 되어 기쁩니다. 앞으로 더 다양한 모습을 보여드릴 생각에 저도 많이 기대되고요.

미디어 매체가 아닌 연극 무대에 선다는 건, 이주연 님에게 어떤 의미인가요?

배우로서 장르 구분 없이 다양한 기회를 통해 여러 캐릭터를 보여드리고 싶은 욕심이 있어요. 연극 무대는 작품을 보러 오신 분들과 밀접하게 소통하고, 눈빛과 분위기로 바로 교감할 수 있어 너무 좋아요. 카메라 앞에 설 때와는 또 다른 생생한 느낌을 받을 수 있어서 긴장도 되지만 짜릿합니다.

이주연 님이 배우로서 가지는 가장 큰 목표는 무엇인가요?

작품에는 주인공 외에도 기본 바탕이 되는 여러 인물이 등장하는데요. 장르와 역할에 상관없이 제가 잘 해낼 수 있고, 흥미로운 인물을 연기하고 싶어요. 저에게 주어진 몫을 잘 해내서, 결과적으로 ‘이주연이 본인과 잘 맞는 캐릭터 옷을 입었네’라는 대중분들의 평을 듣고 싶어요. 제 본래 모습과 그동안 보고 느낀 것들을 연기로 잘 표현해내는, 그렇게 성장하는 배우가 되고 싶고요.

연기 생활을 통해 배웠거나 스스로 만들어 나간 배우로서의 책임감이 있다면?

 지금까지의 연기 생활을 통해 배운 건 엄청 많죠. 현장에서의 연기적인 스킬 외에도 현장에서 이런 감정 씬에서는 어떻게 하는지, 또 스태프분들과 친밀해지는 방법이랄까 그런 부분들도 있고요. 촬영장에서는 캐릭터 이름으로 불리는 경우가 많아서 현장 도착하는 순간부터 더 책임감을 갖고 임해요. 그리고 작품에 조화로운 인물이 되려고 항상 생각하고, 끝날 때마다 어느 정도 성장했는지 스스로 되돌아보는 시간을 가집니다.

요즘 드라마와 영화의 장르가 다양해지면서 배우들의 선택 폭도 넓어졌다고 볼 수 있는데요. 평소 해보고 싶은 장르나 배역이 있다면 어떤 것인가요?

 그동안 조금 새침하고 여성스러운 역할이 많았다면, 걸크러쉬한 장르물이나 센 캐릭터들을 하고 싶어요. 매력적이죠. 정말 통통 튀는 로맨틱 코미디도 해보고 싶고요. 아직 해야 할 장르가 많은 것 같아서 기회가 주어진다면 정말 다양한 배역을 해보고 싶어요.

음악, 연기 뭐 하나 빠짐없이 최선을 다해 지금의 자리에 오르셨는데요. 이 외에 예술적 분야를 통틀어 배워보고 싶은 것들이 있나요?

미술, 사진, 운동 등등 기회가 된다면 다양하게 해보려고 해요. 그게 결국 제 자산이 되고 또 다른 행복인 것 같아요. 처음에는 해보지 않은 것들이라 낯설고 생경한데 하다 보면 성취하는 재미로 이어지는 경우가 많았던 것 같아요. 최근에는 자전거 라이딩에 도전해보고 싶었는데, 성공했어요. 장거리에도 도전해서 매우 즐거웠던 경험이 있어요. 라이딩은 정말 추천합니다.

스스로에 대해 최근 새롭게 알게 된 점이 있나요? 또 그것들이 연기에 어떻게 도움이 되고 있는지 궁금합니다.

패션이나 뷰티에 워낙 관심이 많아서 그걸 제 개인 유튜브 채널을 통해 보여드리고 있어요. 처음에는 소소하게 시작했는데 구독자분들이 생각보다 더 좋아해 주셔서, 저에 대한 것도 더 공개하게 되고 좋은 것들이 있으면 더 나누고 소통하려 노력 중이에요. 정말 열정적으로 하고 있어서 스스로도 놀랐어요! 나중에 캐릭터 연구, 스타일링이나 표현에 있어서 분명 도움이 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

배우로서 이주연 님의 커리어가 앞으로 더 기대되는데요. 올해 남은 기간 동안 계획하고 있으신 것들이 있나요?

우선 새 회사에 온 만큼 이전보다 더 다양한 모습을 보여드리려 해요. 올해 연극부터 시작해 최근에는 <문명특급 - 컴눈명 프로젝트>에도 출연했어요. <컴눈명> 같은 경우는 오랜만에 애프터스쿨 멤버로 만나 뵙게 돼 감회가 정말 남달랐던 것 같아요. 다시 배우 이주연으로 조만간 새로운 작품에서 인사드리도록 하겠습니다. 


 

It’s Time We Delved into Lee Juyeon’s Many Charms

On 2007, Lee Juyeon began her career as an actress with a minor movie role. She has slowly cemented her position as a major actress in Korean dramas and movies in leading and supporting roles, breathing life into each storyline. Her appeal grew stronger with the passage of time. In her twenties, her energy gave the productions that she was featured in new life. Now that she is in her thirties, she is a reliable, mature actress that can be entrusted with key roles.
 

In contrast to the colorful images that she portrays, her most often mentioned trait is her authenticity. At times we see performers trying too hard in their roles in dramas and movies, displaying excessive energy. However, Lee Juyeon exhibits just the right amount of energy for each role she plays, melting seamlessly into her scenes with a captivating simplicity. We saw her effortless style played out in her cameo appearances on the TV series “Reply.” The show was known for its natural style of acting and production. Her time on the show proved that the production crew was well aware of her strengths.
 

Up until 2020, she continued to deliver strong performances in both dramas and movies. But in 2021, she expanded her accomplishments and range to include stage theater. She made a theatrical comeback with “Special Liar.” Once again, she showcased her acting abilities. She showed the audience her talents do not waver even if she is not performing in front of a camera. It was her first time venturing onto the stage since her 2016 role in “Bumbling People.”
 

This talented actress can be seen on TV, on stage, and in theaters. She has continued to prove and express herself for as long as she’s been in the public eye. Yet, we still cannot say we understand her completely. We continue to find new aspects of her allure with every performance as if she were an inexhaustible gold mine. Could we be missing some part of her magnetism? If so, we should not waste any more time. Having reached the entrance of that proverbial gold mine, it was with happy hearts that we at Rolling Stone Korea decided to delve deeper into Lee Juyeon’s fascinating story.

Hello, subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea. My name is Lee Juyeon, and I’m an actress. This is my first time saying hello to everyone here. It’s very nice to meet all of you.

After you signed with C-JeS Entertainment in May of 2021, you announced that you would actively participate in various activities. Now you are around a lot of new actors and singers. How does this make you feel?

I signed with C-JeS because there are so many good actors there. Plus, the company has a lot of experience in the industry as a whole. After transferring to C-JeS, I’m still in the process of getting to know the staff. But, it’s really nice that everyone’s so attentive and listens to my suggestions. I’m happy to be with so many great senior and junior artists. I’m also excited at the thought of being able to show different sides of myself.

How do you feel about acting on stage rather than on screen?

As an actress, I have a desire to play a variety of characters through different opportunities regardless of genre. What I love about the stage is being able to communicate, be really close with the audience, and express myself with my eyes and facial expressions. It’s a feeling of aliveness that is different from acting in front of a camera. So it makes me nervous, but it has its thrills.

We think you set a goal and consistently work for it no matter what it is. Even if it takes a long time, you will be able to achieve whatever you set your mind to. As an actress, what is your biggest dream?

In any project, many roles, apart from the main characters, play a part in forming the basis of the story. Regardless of the genre or part, I want to play an interesting character that I can play well. I want to do my job so well that the public thinks that I was well-matched with my role. I want to be an actress who keeps growing as I express myself and the things I feel through my acting.

What are some of the things you have to do as an actor, goals that you have set yourself, or something you’ve learned through your career?

There are so many things I’ve learned throughout my acting career. Not only the acting skills required on set, but a lot of other things such as how to do emotional scenes and how to connect with the staff members. When you arrive on set, people usually call you by your character’s name. So as soon as I arrive, I feel a great deal of responsibility. I always try to become the character that fits seamlessly into the film or play. At the end of every project, I take some time to reflect on how much I’ve grown.

Nowadays, there are lots of thriller/suspense dramas and movies. So, it can be said that the range of stories and roles one can choose from is broader. Is there a genre or part that has interested you lately?

In the past, there were a lot of sassy and feminine characters I wanted to play. Now, I want to participate in women-empowering genres and play strong characters. They’re really appealing. I also want to try a cute romantic comedy. There are so many genres to choose from. So, if I am given the opportunity, I want to try a variety of roles.

 You’ve made it to where you are because you’ve always done your best in everything from acting to music. Are there any other fields of art that you want to learn other than music and acting?

I want to try out different things if I’m given a chance, such as art, photography, and exercise. All these things become assets eventually and another source of joy. They used to be things that were unfamiliar to me. But as I kept doing them, I found that I was having fun and felt a strong sense of accomplishment. Recently, I wanted to try bike riding, and I succeeded! I had a really good time riding a bicycle over a long distance. So, I really recommend bike riding!

 What is something new you recently found out about yourself? How do those things help you with acting?

I’ve always been really into fashion and beauty. So, I’m showing those things through my YouTube channel. At first, I started out small. But my subscribers have shown me a lot of love. So, I’m revealing more about myself. If there are things I like, I try to share them and interact with my subscribers. I’m shocked that I’m so passionate about my channel! I’m sure that this will help with character analysis, styling, and expression later on.

We look forward to your future acting career. Are there any plans for the rest of the year?

First, because I’ve signed with a new company, I want to show different sides of myself. I acted in a play this year. I also appeared on “MMTG – Songs That Deserve a Comeback.” “Songs That Deserve a Comeback” was really emotional because I got to meet my “After School” members for the first time in a long time. But, I’ll be back soon to say hello to you guys as the actress Lee Juyeon in a new project!
