More than a decade ago, before sold-out tours, millions of streams, and a global fanbase, LANY started in a far less glamorous setting: a one-bedroom apartment with a mattress on the floor.
When Paul Klein and Jake Goss first met, Jake admits he initially expected Paul to be a more serious personality. But it didn’t take long for him to discover a completely different side of his future bandmate. “A fun guy, the laugh you can hear from like Saskatoon.” That friendship quickly became the core of their creative partnership.
“Jake was having a lot more success than I was at the time when I met him, so maybe I thought he would be a little harder to get a hold of, but we were hanging from the jump. And one thing about Jake that I learned pretty quick is we don’t really speak for the first few hours when we wake up. And I actually really respect that. Jake doesn’t want to talk to you, and I don’t want to talk to you either when we first wake up.” Paul recalls.
Over ten years later, that same understanding remains one of the reasons their friendship works. They know each other’s rhythms, both onstage and off.
This year, much of LANY’s life has been spent on the road. Between touring schedules, performances, and constant travel, staying healthy has become part of their daily routine. Protein shakes are now a touring essential, while Jake has earned a reputation as the band’s snack king - always prepared and carrying something to eat wherever he goes. It’s a small detail, but one that perfectly captures the personality behind the drummer fans know on stage.
The Story Behind “Prettiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen”
“Prettiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen,” one of the standout tracks from their latest work, came from a simple sentence Paul said to his now-fiancée.
“Truthfully, I was sitting on the couch with my now fiance. I did say to her, you’re the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen. And then I had an immediate thought. I would be so pissed if somebody wrote a song with that title. So I wrote it the next day, just in case somebody maybe had that same thought that same night. So yeah, we wrote it the next day.”
The song, however, wasn’t immediately an obvious choice for everyone. Paul revealed that he and another member of the team had to fight for the idea, convincing others to believe in the direction, as the song represented something different for LANY. With its playful energy and bright personality, “Prettiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen” felt a little bubblegum, a little cheeky, and revealed a side of the band that fans hadn’t seen before. As Paul described it, it was “a brand new color in our box of crayons as a band.”
Finding the Good Parts of Love and Marriage
Jake celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary this year. His wife has joined him on tour, traveling from city to city and experiencing the world alongside him.
“When we bring our daughter with us too, we always feel like our biggest bonding moments are when we’re traveling together, because you just kind of have to figure stuff out as a squad. And so anything we do as a little unit is just the greatest thing ever.”
That perspective shaped “Good Parts,” one of the first songs written for the album and a track that became an early blueprint for the sonic direction that would eventually lead into “Soft”.
Paul shared an interesting perspective behind the song’s message: when someone gets broken up with, he believes they shouldn’t rewrite history by attacking the other person or the relationship. Instead of focusing on resentment, “Good Parts” chooses to remember what was real, the moments that made the relationship meaningful in the first place.
Paul Klein: The Man Behind LANY’s Socials
One of the biggest surprises about LANY’s online presence is that the person behind it is the same person fans see on stage. Paul personally manages LANY’s social media, from captions and graphics to thumbnails and the overall visual identity of the band. It has been that way since day one.
“It’s a full-time job,” Paul says. Rather than handing the responsibility to someone else, he sees the band’s digital presence as another extension of their artistry. “I feel weird handing it off to somebody else. It’s so much of like, it’s our expression of who we are to millions of pe people.” For Paul, LANY’s connection with fans doesn’t stop when the music ends. Every post, image, and detail becomes another way for the band to communicate who they are.
