11월의 토론토는 이미 눈으로 살짝 덮이기 시작했지만, 오늘 저녁은 유난히 따뜻했다. K팝 테마 라이브 쇼 <코하이의 믹스테이프(Kohai’s Mixtape 2025)>에는 pH-1, 홍다빈(DPR LIVE), 제미나이(GEMINI) 등 다양한 아티스트들이 한자리에 모여 내뿜는 뜨거운 에너지로 가득했다. 

아티스트 라운지에 발을 들이자마자 뒤를 돌아보니 pH-1이 서 있었다. 남색 캡, 깔끔한 얼굴선, 살짝 수줍은 미소. 내게 알고 있는 인상 그대로였다. 내성적이고 얌전한 성격의 소유자.

우리는 자연스럽게 대화를 나누게 됐다. 뉴욕에서 자란 pH-1은 이제 가족과 함께 한국에 완전히 정착했다. 미국으로 돌아가는 건 고향에 오는 기분이라고 그는 말한다. 비록 특별한 이유가 아니면 거의 돌아가지 않지만 말이다.

그의 곡 <SOAK IN BLUE>는 매우 개인적인 곡으로, 내면의 감정적인 고뇌를 담고 있다. 그는 한 시간 만에 이 곡을 작곡했고, 단 한 번의 촬영으로 뮤직비디오를 완성했으며, 첫 번째 원본 버전을 그대로 확정했다. 정규 3집 앨범 [WHAT HAVE WE DONE]에서 이 곡은 그가 가장 좋아하는 트랙이지만, 지금은 거의 듣지 않는다. 그때의 휘몰아치던 감정으로 다시 돌아가게 되기 때문이다.

모든 래퍼가 파티, 클럽, 과음에 빠져 있다고 생각할지 모르지만, pH-1은 전혀 그렇지 않다. 그는 '파티 피플'이 아니다. 대신 친구들과 옥상에 올라가 음료를 홀짝이며 분위기에 젖어드는 소박하고 차분한 시간을 즐긴다. 다소 거친 클럽 속 장면과는 거리가 멀다. 
 

pH-1과의 대화는 여러 번 내 마음을 울렸는데, 특히 와닿았던 순간은 그가 일기를 쓴다고 했을 때다. 그는 자신의 기분을 기록하고, 생각을 정리하며, 건강한 정신을 유지하려 한다. 끊임없이 시끄럽고 숨 가쁘게 돌아가는 세상 속에서, 이러한 류의 자기 성찰은 특별하고 소중하게 느껴진다. 덕분에 나는 이전에 보지 못했던 pH-1의 새로운 모습을 보게 됐다.

알고 보니 pH-1은 부끄러움이 많은 게 아니라 천천히 마음을 여는 편이었다. 그리고 중요한 건, 그가 정말 유쾌하다는 점이다. 게다가 타고난 회견자이기도 하다. 그는 오히려 인터뷰하는 입장으로 당신을 인터뷰할 몇 안 되는 아티스트 중 한 명이다. 대부분의 사람은 자기 자신에게만 집중하지만, pH-1은 진심으로 삶을 사랑하며 주변 세상에 관심이 많다. 

그와 함께하면 카메라가 돌아가고 있다는 사실조차 잊게 된다. 마치 오랜 친구와 만나서 장난치며 자유롭게 이야기하는 기분이다. 

지금 pH-1은 아주 좋은 위치에 있다. 그는 자신의 커리어에서 숨김없이 더 큰 목표를 쫓는 중이다. 사랑에 관해서는 신중하게 선택한다. 서두르지도 않고, 업계 내 복잡한 관계도 피한다. 그는 자기만의 삶과 열정을 가진, 건전하고 독립적인 여성들에게 끌린다. 그 이유는 쉽게 알 수 있다.

추운 겨울에 모처럼 작은 온기를 선사한 인터뷰였다. 진솔한 대화에서만 느낄 수 있는 진정한 교감이 이뤄졌기 때문이다. 그리고 어느 날 우연히 그를 만난다면 당신도 알게 될 것이다. pH-1은 단순한 아티스트가 아니다. 그는 알아갈 가치가 있는 사람이다.

November in Toronto had already begun to dust the city with snow, yet this evening felt unusually warm. The energy inside Kohai’s Mixtape, a K-pop-themed live show that brought together pH-1, Dabin (DPR Live), Gemini, and a lineup of other artists to light up the cold.

The moment I stepped into the artist lounge, I turned around, and there was pH-1. Navy cap, clean-cut features, a slightly shy smile. It was exactly the kind of impression I had of him: an introverted, reserved guy, quietly good-natured.

As we were still setting up, we couldn’t help but start chatting. Grew up in New York, pH-1 has now fully settled back in Korea with his family. Returning to North America feels like coming home, he says, even though he rarely comes back without a concrete work reason.

His track “Soak In Blue” is deeply personal, a snapshot of a private emotional struggle. He wrote it in an hour, shot the music video in a single take, and chose to keep that first, raw version. He cried on camera. It’s his favorite track from the album What Have We Done, but he hardly listens to it now - it drags him back to that exact emotional space.

You might think all rappers are about parties, clubs, and heavy drinking, but pH-1 isn’t like that at all. He doesn’t belong to “Party People”. What he really enjoys is something low-key and atmospheric, like heading to a rooftop with friends, sipping a drink, and just soaking in the vibe, not the wild, clubbing scene you might expect.
 

Talking to pH-1 has hit me multiple times, and one moment that really stuck was when he mentioned he keeps a diary, something I do too. He records his moods, sorts through his thoughts, and uses it to maintain his mental health. In a world that’s always noisy and moving at breakneck speed, this kind of intentional self-reflection feels special and precious. It gave me a whole new perspective on him, showing a side of pH-1 I hadn’t seen before.

Turns out, pH-1 is slow to warm up, not shy, just takes his time. And here’s the thing - he’s extremely hilarious. On top of that, he’s a natural interviewer. One of the few artists who actually turns the table and interviews you back. Most people are focused on themselves, but pH-1 genuinely loves life and is curious about the world around him. 
With him, it never feels staged, you forget the camera is rolling, like you’re just catching up with an old friend, teasing and talking freely.

Right now, pH-1 is in an excellent place. He doesn’t hide his ambition and is chasing bigger goals in his career. When it comes to love, he’s being selective. No rush, no industry entanglements. He gravitates toward wholesome, independent women who have their own lives and passions. It’s easy to see why. 

This is, honestly, one of my favorite interviews. It truly brought a little warmth to this cold winter. I love people, and I love the kind of authentic connection you can only get from a genuine conversation. And if you catch him at the right moment, you’ll see it: pH-1 isn’t just an artist. He’s a person worth knowing.
