이수만의 A2O 엔터테인먼트 산하 첫 번째 공식 걸 그룹인 A2O MAY는 기록을 깨고 기대를 뛰어넘었다. 히트 싱글 [Under My Skin]으로 중국 그룹 최초로 미국 Top 40 라디오 차트에 진입한 A2O MAY는 최신 EP [PAPARAZZI ARRIVE]를 통해 진정한 글로벌 스타로 자리매김하기를 희망하고 있다. 발매를 며칠 앞두고, 롤링스톤 코리아는 뉴욕의 루프탑에서 그들을 만났다. 떠오르는 스타들과 새 앨범, 멤버 개개인의 스타일, 그리고 A2O MAY가 다음에 나아가고자 하는 방향에 관해 이야기를 나눴다.

1. [RSK] 새 EP [PAPARAZZI ARRIVE] 발매 축하해요. 이 앨범이 데뷔 앨범이라는 점을 감안할 때, 14개의 트랙이 어떤 방식으로 A2O MAY의 고유한 사운드를 대변한다고 할 수 있을까요?

MICHE: 이 앨범이 저희의 데뷔 앨범이기 때문에, 저희가 함께하는 트랙뿐만 아니라 저희의 솔로 트랙에도 집중하고 싶었어요. 팬분들에게 저희의 이런 면모를 보여주고 싶고, 저희의 개성 또한 드러내고 싶습니다.

SHIJIE: 저에게 가장 ‘A2O MAY’다운 부분은 다국어인 동시에 퍼포먼스 준비가 되어 있다는 점이에요. 앨범에서 여러 가지 다른 장르를 보여드렸지만, 모든 면이 저희가 '잘파 팝(Zalpha Pop)'이라는 것을 정의하고 있어요. 트랙 하나만 들어도 저희 노래라는 걸 알 수 있죠.

2. [RSK] 모든 멤버가 솔로와 유닛 트랙을 통해 빛날 기회를 가졌어요. MICHE와 KAT의 <SWEAT>, CHENYU의 <Someone You Loved>, QUCHANG의 <Black Sheep>, 그리고 SHIJIE의 <Trip>으로요. 각 멤버는 이 곡들을 통해 어떤 강점을 강조하고 싶었어요?

MICHE: QUCHANG의 <Black Sheep>은 보컬을 정말 잘 보여줘요! 그 노래의 보컬은 정말 완벽하죠! 제가 정말 좋아하는 또 다른 곡은 제 동생 KAT과 제가 함께 한 <SWEAT>예요. 라틴 스타일의 음악과 춤이어서 팬분들이 듣고 볼 때 아주 새로울 거예요.

CHENYU: <Someone You Loved>를 통해서는 사람들이 저의 낮은 음역을 들어주셨으면 했어요. 저희 모두가 각자의 두드러지는 면을 보여주는 노래를 고를 수 있었죠. 그래서 저는 ‘좋아, 이번 기회에 이 모습을 확실히 보여주자’라고 생각했습니다. 하하!

3. [RSK] 만약 다른 멤버나 유닛과 트랙을 바꿀 수 있다면 누구의 노래를 선택하고 싶어요?

SHIJIE: 서로 노래를 바꿀 일은 없을 것 같아요. 저희 모두 각자의 포커스 트랙을 정말 좋아하거든요. 게다가 저희 다섯 명이 타이틀곡을 위해 뭉칠 땐 훨씬 더 임팩트 있는 폭발력을 만들죠. 가사, 멜로디, 심지어 사이렌 소리까지 정말 인상적이에요.

KAT: 꼭 골라야 한다면 <Trip>을 시도해보고 싶어요. 저는 R&B를 좋아하거든요. 부드럽고 그루비한 노래를 무대에서 선보이는 게 재미있을 것 같아요. 하지만 SHIJIE가 말한 것처럼, 지금 각자의 노래가 너무 잘 맞아서 이대로가 완벽하다고 생각해요.

4. [RSK] 앞으로 A2O MAY가 더 시도해봐야 한다고 생각하는 장르가 있나요?

SHIJIE: 저는 R&B를 더 탐험하고 싶어요. 이번 앨범에서도 이미 시도하긴 했지만요! <멜로디(Melody)>라는 곡이 있는데, 원래 유명한 중국 가수인 데이비드 타오(David Tao)의 곡이에요. CHENYU, QUCHANG, 그리고 제가 리메이크했어요! 개인적으로는 힙합과 소울도 시도해보고 싶습니다.

QUCHANG: 저는 록(Rock)을 해보고 싶어요!

5. [RSK] 세 가지 콘셉트 촬영(Un-Chained, Un-Fazed, Un-Stoppable) 중 어떤 콘셉트가 가장 스스로와 가장 잘 어울린다고 생각해요?

KAT: 아마 Un-Fazed인 것 같아요. 저는 그 의상이 정말 좋았는데, 저희가 평소 자주 시도하는 스타일은 아니거든요. 새로운 스타일로 발을 디디고 시도해 봤는데, MICHE는 어때요?

MICHE: 저는 Un-Chained요. 저희가 강렬한 붉은색 의상을 자주 입었잖아요. 이제 빨간색은 보라색 외에 저희의 주요 색상 중 하나가 된 것 같아요!

QUCHANG: 저는 Un-Stoppable이 강하면서도 깔끔한 느낌이라 좋았어요. 제가 막내여서 그런지 다른 멤버들보다 부드럽게 보일 때가 있는데, 이 콘셉트는 저를 좀 더 강해 보이게 만들어서 그게 좋았어요.

6. [RSK] 지난달 상하이에선 현장 참석자, 온라인 참가자와 함께한 첫 팬 미팅 이벤트를 가졌죠! 이런 방식으로 팬들과 처음으로 소통한 기분은 어땠어요?

SHIJIE: 우선, 팬분들을 직접 만날 수 있게 되어 정말 감사드려요. 정말 정말 기억에 남는 경험이었어요! 모든 저희 메이니아(MAYnia)들에게 진심으로 감사하다는 이야기를 전하고 싶어요. 메이니아들에게 샤라웃(Shout out)! 메이니아는 열정으로 가득 차 있고 저희에게 많은 사랑을 보여줘요. 정말 많이 고마워요!

KAT: 사실 거의 울 뻔했어요. 댓글만 읽는 게 아니라 팬들의 반응을 라이브로 들을 수 있었던 게 처음이었거든요. 또, 다른 도시의 팬들이 온라인으로 동시에 참여하는 것을 보며 ‘아, 사람들이 정말 우리를 보고 있구나’ 하는 기분이 들었어요. 정말 큰 동기 부여가 됐어요.

7. [RSK] 이미 중국과 미국에선 공연을 마쳤는데, 다음으로는 어떤 국가나 도시를 방문하고 싶어요?

CHENYU: 팬분들이 있는 모든 곳에 가고 싶고, 모두를 만나고 싶어요! 올해는 미국에서 첫 쇼, 첫 팬 미팅, 첫 EP 앨범처럼 많은 최초의 경험을 하고 있으니, 앞으로는 이런 쇼를 통해 모든 나라에서 최초의 경험을 하고 싶어요.

QUCHANG: 저는 한국과 싱가포르에 가고 싶어요! 한국과 싱가포르에서 많은 메시지를 받고 있는데, 팬분들이 퍼포먼스 무대를 정말 좋아해 주시는 것 같아요. 저희 노래들이 퍼포먼스 위주인 만큼 많이 즐겨주실 것 같아요.

MICHE: 그리고 라틴 아메리카도요! <SWEAT> 스페인어 버전도 만들었으니까, 직접 반응을 보고 싶어요.

8. [RSK] (인터뷰 날짜를 기준으로) 이번 주엔 로스앤젤레스의 유니버설 시티워크(Universal CityWalk) 무대에 오를 예정이죠? 관객에게 라이브로 선보이고 싶은 노래는 뭐예요?

QUCHANG: 당연히 <PAPARAZZI ARRIVE>요! 라이브로 두 번째로 선보이는 건데, 관객 앞에서는 처음이에요! 야외의 많은 관중과 함께 큰 무대에서 공연하게 되어 정말 흥분돼요!

9. [RSK] 그곳에 머무는 동안 연결된 유니버설 스튜디오에도 들를 계획이에요?

SHIJIE: 세상에, 이 질문 너무 좋아요! 저희는 정말로 그러고 싶어요. 특히 저희가 이전에 그곳에 가봤기에 더더욱요. 이번이 저희의 유니버설 스튜디오 세 번째 방문인 것 같아요. LA에 있는 식스 플래그(Six Flags)에도 갔었어요. 저희 다섯 명 모두 정말 좋아해요!

QUCHANG: 저는 항상 무섭다고 하지만... 그러면서도 결국 타요.(웃음) 멤버들이 가면 저도 갈 거예요. 저는 사진 찍는 걸 좋아하니, 저희 스토리 기대해 주세요!

10. [RSK] 이제 마무리할 시간인데, 롤링스톤 코리아 독자들에게 더 전하고 싶은 이야기가 있나요?

A2O MAY Kick Off International Promotions with Debut Multilingual EP “PAPARAZZI ARRIVE”

As the first official girl group under Soo Man LEE’s A2O Entertainment, A2O MAY have broken records and defied expectations. After becoming the first Chinese group to enter the U.S.

Top 40 Radio Chart with their hit single “Under My Skin,” A2O MAY hopes to truly cement themselves as international stars through their latest EP “PAPARAZZI ARRIVE.” Only a few days before the release, Rolling Stone Korea met with the group on a breezy New York City rooftop to speak with the up-and-coming starlets about the new album, the members’ personal styles, and where A2O MAY hopes to go next.

1. [RSK] Congrats on the release of your EP “PAPARAZZI ARRIVE!” Given that this is your debut album, in what ways would you say these 14 tracks represent A2O MAY’s

unique sound?

MICHE: Since this is our debut album, we not only wanted to focus on the tracks that we do together, but also our solo tracks. We want to present these sides to our fans and showcase our individuality as well.

SHIJIE: For me, the most “A2O MAY” part is that it’s multilingual and performance-ready at the same time. We showed a lot of different genres with the album but everything still defines what we call Zalpha Pop. So even if you only hear one track, you can tell it’s us.

2. [RSK] All of the members have the opportunity to shine with solo and unit tracks: MICHE & KAT with “SWEAT,” CHENYU with “Someone You Loved,” QUCHANG with “Black Sheep,” and SHIJIE with “Trip.” Which strength(s) were each of you hoping to highlight throughout these songs?

MICHE: QUCHANG's “Black Sheep” really demonstrates her vocals! The vocals for that song are on point! Another that I really love is “SWEAT” by my sister Kat and I. It’s a Latin style song and dance, so it's very new for our fans to hear and see.

CHENYU: For “Someone You Loved,” I really wanted people to hear my lower tone. We were all able to pick a song that shows what stands out for each of us, So I was like, “Okay, let me show this side once and for all.” Haha!

3. [RSK] If you could switch tracks with one other member/unit, whose would it be and why?

SHIJIE: I don’t think we ever would switch songs with each other because we really love our own focus tracks. Plus, it makes a more impactful explosion when the five of us do come together for the title track. The lyrics, all of the melodies, and even the siren are impressive as one.

KAT: If I had to pick, I’d try “Trip.” I love R&B and I think doing a smoother, groovier song like that on stage would be fun for me. But like Shijie said — our songs fit us so well right now, so I think it’s perfect the way it is.

4. [RSK] Are there any genres that you think A2O MAY should try more in the future?

SHIJIE: For me, I want to explore R&B more, even though we already tried on this album! The song is called “Melody,” originally by David Tao, who is a really famous Chinese singer.

CHENYU, QUCHANG, and I did a remake! I also personally want to try Hip-hop and Soul.

QUCHANG: I want to try Rock!!!

5. [RSK] Which of the three concept shoots (Un-Chained, Un-Fazed, or Un-Stoppable) do you think matches your own style the most?

KAT: Probably Un-Fazed. I really like that style of outfit, and it's not something we usually do. We stepped into new styles and tried on new things! What about you, MICHE?

MICHE: For me, it is Un-Chained because we wore a lot of very powerful reds. I think red is one of our main colors besides purple now!

QUCHANG: I liked Un-Stoppable because it felt strong but still clean. I’m the youngest, so sometimes I look softer than the others, but that concept made me look a little more fierce. I liked that. 

6. [RSK] Last month, you all had your very first fan meeting event in Shanghai with

in-person attendees as well as online participants! How did it feel to interact with fans in this way for the first time?

SHIJIE: First of all, we're so grateful to get to meet our fans in person, It was really, really memorable! I want to say a huge thank you to all of our MAYnia, shout out to MAYnias! They are so full of passion and show lots of love to us. We have so much appreciation for them!

KAT: I almost cried actually because it was the first time I could hear their reactions live, not just read comments. Also seeing fans from other cities joining online at the same time — it made us feel like, “Oh, people are really watching us.” It was very motivating.

7. [RSK] While you have already performed in China and the United States, are there any specific countries/cities you would like to go to next?

CHENYU: We want to go everywhere that our fans live. We just want to meet them all! This year we have a lot of firsts, like the first U.S. show, the first fan meeting, and now the first EP album, so now we want to have firsts in every country with future shows like this.

QUCHANG: I want to go to Korea and Singapore! We get a lot of messages from there, and I feel like the fans there really like performance stages. Since our songs are very performance-heavy, I think they would enjoy it a lot.

MICHE: And Latin America too! Because we did “SWEAT” and Spanish versions, I really want to see the reactions in person.

8. [RSK] Later this week, A2O May will be taking the stage at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles! Is there a particular song you guys are looking forward to doing live in front of the audience?

QUCHANG: Absolutely “PAPARAZZI ARRIVE!” It's gonna be our second time performing it live, but the first time with a live audience! We're super excited to perform on such a huge stage with a big crowd outdoors!

9. [RSK] Are you planning to stop by the attached Universal amusement park while you’re there?

SHIJIE: Oh, my gosh, I love this question! We actually really want to, especially because we’ve been to Universal parks before. This is like the third time we’ve been to one of the Universal Studios. We also went to Six Flags in L.A. All five of us love it!

QUCHANG: I always say I’m scared… but then I still ride whatever it is. (laughs) If the members go, I’ll go too. I like taking pictures there, so please look forward to our stories!

10. [RSK] As we wrap things up, is there anything else you’d like to share with Rolling Stone Korea readers?

CHENYU: I just want to say a big thanks to all the MAYnias, and thank you for this opportunity! Please stay tuned for A2O MAY!
