“My new dream is to create a society and environment
that allows golf players (and all athletes) to enjoy sports for a long time.”

The Legacy of the Hazard Shot Lives On, Se Ri Pak

Se Ri Pak's approach is rather casual as she shares her fancy single life and fun stories on various entertainment shows. In the late 1990s, when Korea was going through the foreign exchange crisis, Se Ri Pak symbolized hope for the Korean people. The whole country celebrated Se Ri Pak winning the U.S. Women's Open. The scene of her going into the water hazard barefooted to hit the ball became famous and played during the airing of Korea's national anthem on TV. The legendary achievements of Se Ri Pak paved the way for many other Korean golfers to win major LPGA tournaments. It can be said that the "Se Ri Kids" are dominating the professional golf world right now.

Se Ri Pak was influential in making golf part of the Korean way of life. Before her appearance in the golf scene, the sport had a reputation for being a leisure activity for the rich. But after Se Ri Pak, it was acknowledged as a reputable sport for everyone. After Korea recovered from the foreign exchange crisis, the population of golfers grew. Many parents wanted their children to become future professional golfers.

Se Ri Pak is considered a "hero of troubled times." But nowadays, she has let go of all her struggles and presents herself enjoying her daily life. Watching her, we have come to realize that the "person" Se Ri Pak is just as precious to us as the "hero" Se Ri Pak.

Rolling Stone Korea had the honor of meeting this extraordinary, down-to-earth sports hero. Great opportunities don't come easily, so let's dive straight into Se Ri Pak's charms with Rolling Stone Korea.

Hello, Se Ri Pak. It's an honor for us to speak with you through this interview with Rolling Stone Korea. Before our interview, please introduce yourself, and say hello.

Hello, I am Se Ri Pak, the Korean Women's Golf National Team Coach and CEO of the sports company "Baz International." It's nice to meet you.

You wrapped up your career 24 years ago as a pro athlete. Now you are working as a coach and CEO of a company. How do you feel about your new life?

After wrapping up my career as a golf player, I approached my new life with the mentality of a person fresh out of college. I had to do so many new things, so I was nervous and worried a lot. I'm sure there are a lot more problems to come. But my motto, "there's nothing more foolish than not trying out of fear of failure," will encourage me to continue taking on such challenges.

We heard that it was solely your decision to play golf, go to the U.S., and retire. What was the most significant influence in making those decisions?

I went to the U.S. with the wild dream of being the "best golfer in the world." At the time, not many people were familiar with Asian golfers (let alone winning games). So that alone was enough to garner worldwide interest. After achieving my goal of being the best and hearing that "Se Ri Kids" were now following in my footsteps on the international stage, I wanted to pass on the baton. If the decision to go to America was for my success, retiring was more for the next generation than myself.

We're sure that there must have been some hardship behind all those seasons and championships. Is that correct?

Golf is an incredibly tiring and arduous sport. But back then, when I was actively competing, I gritted my teeth through those times with the sole goal of being the best.

Regardless of the outcome, which tournament did you enjoy the most?

To be honest, I don't think I ever purely enjoyed a tournament. This is probably because of the pressure of the winner and loser being divided with a single hit in one crucial moment, which repeats every day. But in retrospect, it was such an honor to play on the field with world-class players. I now think of all the changes that followed every time I hoisted up a championship trophy. So overall, my time as a golf player was full of happiness.

Where do you keep your trophies?

My trophies are my precious legacy. So, I have them stored safely. After retiring and coming back to Korea from the U.S., I built my own house. I have a spot on one side of my living room to display all the memories and trophies from my golf career. When I turn on the lights of my trophy display stand, the crystal trophies shine.

Whenever I see that, I'm really proud of everything I achieved.
