“People want to see magic that can solve the problems we currently face.”

A Wizard Who Believes in Miracles

In the short history of magic in Korea, Choi Hyun Woo has always been a rising star. Developing various techniques and a star image is hard work. But Choi Hyun Woo has quietly and consistently put in the effort to become one of the foremost magicians in Korea.

These days, Choi Hyun Woo is working on his techniques as a mentalist. This type of magic of “reading someone’s mind” is one of the biggest reasons Choi Hyun Woo is still one of the best in the business. Looking into his early career, it’s clear that he has boldly pioneered new types of magic, following the trends.

Rolling Stone Korea had a magical time with the “great Illusionist” Choi Hyun Woo. Choi Hyun Woo is known for uncovering people’s truths. This time, he is revealing the secret stores hidden in his heart.

Hello. Choi Hyun Woo. It’s so nice to meet you through this interview with Rolling Stone Korea. First, please introduce yourself, and say hello.

Hello! I am the “Wizard,” Choi Hyun Woo. This year’s the 25th anniversary of my debut. So, I’ve been in this game for a pretty long time. It’s such an honor to be with Rolling Stone Korea, the Korean version of the international magazine Rolling Stone.

It’s been quite a while since you’ve started magic. It’s been 25 years since your debut. How do you feel when you look back?

So many things have happened during those 25 years. Time flies by so quickly. I still vividly remember the nerves I felt before doing my first performance. But to think that it’s already been 25 years, it feels like time magically teleported me. When I first started my career, there were barely any full-time magicians in Korea. But, I’m so grateful that many people love and support me.

You have been preparing for an end-of-the-year performance that was postponed due to COVID-19, correct? We also heard that “The Brain” is a copyrighted performance that you do from start to finish with the audience. What made you start doing this type of performance?

There are stages in the development of magic. First, magic that used animals, like pigeons, was popular. Then, it crossed over to illusion magic. That style is mainly known for cutting people in half and levitating things. Then, the next stage is close-up magic that deals with more realistic topics. It’s the type of magic done with cards, coins, and phones in front of a small group of people. The audience gets to experience the magic by looking with their own eyes and feeling it with their own hands. The last stage is mentalism. It’s the type of illusion most like magic for audience members who don’t believe in what they see on stage. The tricks consist of neuroscience, psychology, and optical illusions, making it challenging to figure out the secret behind the trick. Recently, with the development of online platforms, many magic techniques have already been exposed. And because of effects like slow motion, there are many constraints now in what we can do. But not only does mentalism not have these constraints, but mentalism is also about directly reading the audience’s mind. So, they can directly experience the moment. This is even more prevalent with the metaverse becoming a closer and closer part of our lives. When I first started “The Brain,” many people were really unfamiliar with the format. But now, mental magic has established itself as one of the more popular forms of magic. I’m sure that many people will enjoy “The Brain” performance as an extension of that.

Your immersive shows bring great satisfaction to the audience. We think this is because of the whole storytelling process you incorporate into your performances. How do you prepare the narrative?

When the millennium era drew near, many predicted that magic would soon disappear. In major newspapers, magic was actually listed in the rankings as one of the careers that would disappear. But we’re still alive. That’s because there is more to magic than just tricks. I’m creating a show using a combination of elements like the weaknesses in the human brain, psychology, and neuroscience. Examples are given to individual audience members, and I reveal all the magic secrets at the end. The combination of the human brain and magic; truly is “The Brain.”

We heard that many Korean magicians performed world-class shows. But we also heard that they are not getting as much spotlight as they deserve. What are your thoughts on Korean magic being recognized around the world?

Many have poked fun at me, saying that I’ve been dominating this industry for too long. (Laugh) But actually, many magicians after me have done very well in international magic competitions. They are performing in gala show performances all over the world while receiving great reviews. Because some perform with Cirque du Soleil, there’s a limit to how much they can do to make a name for themselves. Becoming a TV magician is an entirely different format. You need to be able to host a TV show that has your name on it. You need to be able to perform a whole hour and thirty minutes with your own magic. So, you need a large staff and a lot of luck. Not all the magicians that have come after me dream of becoming TV magicians. They are all performers who do their best in their own places and receive favorable reviews whenever they perform. So, I’m really proud of them.
