By.

In Memory of Kang Soo-yeon

Actress Kang Soo-yeon passed away unexpectedly on May 7, 2022, saddening her many fans. Kang, who was born in 1966, continued to work in the film industry, whether on or off the silver screen, ever since her debut at the age of four. She was well known for her dedication to film development in Korea, and she served as the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Busan International Film Festival in 2016.

According to actress Kim Bo-yeon, Kang garnered attention from her colleagues for her outstanding acting skills since she was young; despite her young age, she acted as if she were someone else in front of the camera. Exceptional from the beginning, Kang won the Best Actress award for her roles in “The Surrogate Woman” (1987) at the 43rd Venice Film Festival, and “Come Come Come Upward” (1989) at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival. Both films were directed by Im Kwon-taek.

Kang became a world star after becoming the first East Asian artist to win Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. During the prime of her career, she starred in “All That Falls Has Wings” (1990), “The Road to Racetrack” (1991), “The Blue in You” (1992), and “The Woman, The Man” (1993). All these films were commercially successful, earning her the title of a ‘Chungmuro actress,’ meaning “a smash hit guarantee.”

In her films, Kang played characters of victims under patriarchy, or women who refuse to give up their social success and sexual desire. Female characters in “Go Alone Like Musso’s Horn” (1995) or “Girls’ Night Out” (1998) seemingly compromise with patriarchy but attempt to deviate from Korea’s patriarchal values in a delicate balancing act. While they are socially punished for their deviation, they do not give up their desire. If image implies thinking itself, as noted by philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman, the female image built by Kang through her films would be of her beliefs and thoughts.

Building her filmography consistently with various films, Kang unexpectedly returned to TV in 2001 and played Jeong Nan-jung, Yoon Won-hyung’s concubine, in the SBS TV drama series “Ladies of the Palace.” Given that Jeong is a seductive woman who takes advantage of men for her wealth and desire in this drama, it fits well with the image built by Kang in her films. That was probably why “Ladies of the Palace” was hugely popular and received 35.4% ratings, with people all over the country watching Kang’s performance. The drama also popularized several catchphrases. As a result, Kang won the Grand Prize in the SBS Drama Awards with actress Jeon In-hwa.

With a successful career, Kang was an active actress until the early 2000s. From the mid-2000s however, she gradually disappeared from the screen. Subsequently, she showcased her competence as a film festival administrator outside the silver screen. In 2017, there was news that Kang would resign as the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Busan International Film Festival and return to acting.

The latest news was that she decided to appear in “JUNG_E” by Director Yeon Sang-ho, and resume her acting after eight years. While the film is set to be released this year, her unexpected death has robbed us of her presence. We look forward to seeing her acting in this film, even as her death deeply saddens everyone. Kang will be remembered by all Korean film buffs; may she rest in peace.

Top 20 Films Featuring Kang Soo-yeon

1. Whale Hunting 2 (1985)

This was Kang’s first appearance as an adult actress after beginning acting at the age of four. It is the film to watch if you want to remember the young and fresh Kang. It also features Son Chang-min, a youth star in the 1980s, and Ahn Sung-ki, who played the insidious beggar king Min-woo.

2. Potatoes (1987)

This film is an adaptation of the novel with the same title by Kim Dong-in, with Kang playing protagonist Bok-nyeo, who is sold by her husband to Mr. Wang due to poverty. The film includes a tragic death.

3. The Surrogate Woman (1987)

Kang won Best Actress at the 43rd Venice Film Festival for her role in this film. It was the beginning of Kang’s peak as an actress.

4. Now, We are Going to Geneva (1987)

This was Kang’s first film after winning Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. The film features the sequela of a veteran of the Vietnam War. Kang played Sun-na, a prostitute with a warm heart. Kang won Best Actress at the 26th Grand Bell Awards for this film.

5. Youth Sketch (1987)

This film, a well-known hit starring Kang, helped to establish her as a young star. The film, which features young love between delightful college students Mi-mi and Cheol-soo, makes us reflect on the meaning of youth with the death of Bomulseom, who dies young from an incurable disease.

6. Come Come Come Upward (1989)

This is an adaptation of Han Sung-won’s 1985 novel of the same name, and is famous for Kang shaving her head to play bhikkhunī Sun-nyeo. Kang won the Best Actress award at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival for her performance in the film.

7. All That Falls Has Wings (1990)

Another adaptation of a novel with the same title by Yi Mun-yol, the film features college student Hyung-bin, who coincidentally falls in love with Yoon-ju, is torn between love and reality, and slowly falls into a downward spiral. Kang portrayed the free-spirited but mentally unstable Yoon-ju, a charming femme fatale.

8. The Road to Racetrack (1991)

Director Jang Sun-woo’s “The Road to Racetrack” is regarded as a landmark in Korean realism films. It features a relationship game that intellectual R, who studied in France, plays to maintain his relationship with J. Kang portrayed J, R’s love interest. J has a physical relationship with R, but rejects marriage. The meaning of routine appears powerless and ambiguous in the context of R and J’s relationship.

9. Berlin Report (1991)

It tells the story of Young-hee, who was adopted by a French family but was sexually abused by her adoptive father. Kang played Young-hee, who has aphasia.

10. The Blue in You (1992)

With jazz-style music and various colors on screen symbolizing a fancy urban life, the film transports you to Korea in the early 1990s. At the same time, it symbolically represents the inner world of Yu-rim, the female protagonist torn between work and marriage, through a blue-toned screen. In a scene where Yu-rim runs away from the wedding hall and cuts her wedding dress with scissors, a glaring stare by Kang, who played Yu-rim, represents the identity of a woman who refuses marriage as a social convention forced upon her.

11. Western Avenue (1993)

The film features a conflict in a Korean immigrant family who run a grocery store on Western Avenue. The film’s significance lies in its depiction of the everyday life of a Korean immigrant family in the US, rarely seen in other Korean films. The narrative in the film is driven by the conflict between Ji-soo, a second-generation immigrant in the US, and her father, who holds conservative Korean values. It provides a new perspective not easily found in other Korean films, as it critically addresses conflict and reconciliation in an immigrant family and racism in the US. Kang played Ji-soo, who suffers racial discrimination in the US.

12. Days of Roses (1994)

Although the film received a negative response from critics upon its release, it helped to establish the thriller genre in Korea. The film depicts a womanizer husband who is punished by his wife with the help of another woman. Despite the fact that Kang’s popularity as a smash hit guarantee dimmed with the commercial failure of this film, she continued to work in other films.

13. Their Last Love Affair (1996)

The film features a man and a woman in a dangerous balancing act between family and love. Young-min and Young-hee, who fell in love with each other at first sight, start living together in a house near the sandy beach of Dadaepo, Busan to avoid other people. Although they live in poverty, they derive physical pleasure from each other. Despite their addictive love, Young-min and Yeon-hee eventually realize that they must break up for each other’s sake. While having their last drink at a pub before the breakup, they cannot let each other go and start sobbing. Do they break up in the end? The film does not answer the question but leaves the ending to the audience. Kang worked with actor Kim Kap-soo in this film.

14. Girls’ Night Out (1998)

This is a debut film by Director Im Sang-soo, featuring sexual discourse by women. The film explores women’s sexual desires, which are suppressed or cannot be expressed in patriarchal society. In the film, Kang played Ho-jeong, who has sex even with a guy she sees for the first time; Ho-jeong is depicted as a character true to her sexual desire. Kang, who played a woman torn between work and marriage in “The Blue in You,” portrayed a woman free of society and oppressive sexual discourse in “Go Alone Like Musso’s Horn.”

15. Rainbow Trout (1999)

The film features an accident that occurs when friends visit Chang-hyun, who runs a fish farm. Chang-hyun’s friends erroneously believe that a boy living near the fish farm sexually harassed Min-woo’s sister-in-law, and drown him to death in the fish farm. They cover up their crime and blame each other for the murder. This process manifests human selfishness. In the film, Kang played Min-woo’s wife, who encourages Chang-hyun and his friends to cover up the crime. While Kang played leading roles in her previous films, she seems relaxed and supports other actors well in this film.

16. The Circle (2003)

This is a mystery thriller, which is rare in Kang’s filmography. The film unveils the hidden past lives of a man and a woman as they identify the motive behind a serial killer who killed five women. The love between a female prosecutor and a serial killer and the tragic fate of their past lives drives the film’s narrative. Kang played Oh Hyun-joo, a passionate prosecutor, and San-hong, the love interest of painter Gwang-rim, across the past and the present. Despite the unrealistic premise of the film, it is interesting to see Kang's confident image of a passionate prosecutor and her classical femininity from “The Surrogate Woman” depicted at the same time in this film.

17. Hanbando (2006)

This film was directed by Kang Woo-suk, who attracted 10 million moviegoers in Korea with “Silmido” (2003). It features the story of historian Choi Min-jae, who is searching for the hidden seal of King Gojong in order to prove that the 1902 treaty by the Korean Empire, cited by the Japanese government to interfere with the promise for unification made between North and South Korea and their efforts to restore the Gyeongui Line, is false. Kang played Empress Myeongseong, who does not back down despite her imminent assassination by Japanese samurai.

18. Hanji (2010)

Director Im Kwon-taek’s 101st film features a story of restoring the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty archived in Jeonju Sago through traditional Korean paper. Kang played Ji-won, a documentary director, while actor Park Joong-hoon played Pil-yong, a grade 7 public servant. While there was some criticism that the film should have been filmed as a documentary, its portrayal of the traditional Korean papermaking process and the beauty of letters written on traditional Korean paper is very impressive.

19. Jury (2012)

“Jury” cinematically depicts the review process of the Busan International Film Festival. Its subject material comes across as fresh and impressive. In the film, Kang portrayed actress Kang, who is an opinionated and troublemaker judge.

20. JUNG_E (2022)

This is Kang’s last film, which will be released this year.
