What is the current value of K-pop?

It has been ten years since the star audition program "The Great Birth" aired. Si-hyuk Bang, a former judge, caused controversy on the show when he advised a San Francisco participant.  Other judges, including Yoon Sang and PD Cho, told the contestant that his style was mediocre compared to his talent and skills.  Si-hyuk Bang, CEO of Bighit Ent., said, "I want to tell you, regardless of the outcome, if you are a singer-songwriter, what you wear is very important. If you want to be an artist, you shouldn't wear what your mom told you to wear." The program was created to discover talented musicians with the potential of being stars. As a result, pointing out a contestant's appearance, not something related to their talent or potential in music, seemed incomprehensible to the public.  This incident happened ten years ago. How do you think the public reacts to the appearance of artists now? How much has the value of K-POP grown in Korea compared to when the show initially debuted?

Despite the many controversies surrounding K-POP related to visuals, stage performances, lip-syncing, etc., idol groups and artists are introduced into the market by powerful entertainment companies' capital and planning strategies.

Their primary goal is to create a new album and market it to fans.  BTS released their first full-length album, "Love Yourself 轉 Tear," in May 2018. The album ended up at No. 1 on Billboard 200 chart. Their new mini-album "Be," released in December 2020, also topped the Billboard 200 chart. As K-POP continues to produce outstanding results, Korea's domestic and global markets' economic value will be substantial over the next decade.

According to an article by KPOPSTARZ, the business of K-POP in North and South America is astronomical. Groups like BTS have an estimated value of about $3.6 billion. The collective value of K-POP musicians, including famous idol bands and top celebrities, exceeds about $5 billion.

Let's look at the current value of K-POP through another lens. According to a survey released in 2018 by the Korean Creative Content Agency, exports related to the music industry amounted to $560 million. Reflecting on the growth in exports from previous years and as a future prospectus, the K-POP industry is expected to exceed $600 million.

Assuming that exports related to the music industry are Free Cash Flow created by Korea in overseas markets, the value of K-POP can roughly be calculated through the DCF (Discounted Cash Flow Method). Let's start by assuming that the growth rate of exports related to the music industry is 10 percent based on past data. From 2019, Free Cash Flow was calculated for the coming five years. K-POPs Perpetual Growth will refer to the Korean music industry's growth rate and global music market. Assuming a three percent increase (calculating the Terminal Value and calculating the present value of KPop with DCF), it is estimated to continue upwards to $6.5 billion. This value results from not reflecting the economic value and potential growth in the domestic local market. If so, the value of K-POP in the global market, including Korea, will end up being worth more than $6.5 billion. According to the October announcement of Interbrand, an American consulting firm, the brand value of Samsung Electronics has grown 12 times from $5.2 billion in 2000 to $62.3 billion in 2020. By 2020, Hyundai Motor's brand value is $14.3 billion, and Naver's brand value is $5.6 billion. As of December 11, 2020, the listed companies' combined market value was about $400 billion, $36.5 billion, and $42.9 billion, respectively. By referring to these companies' brand value and market capitalization, we can predict the value of K-POP and estimate future growth potential.

K-POP also has infinite scalability. This is because famous idol bands and individuals create significant economic value in other industries. Based on solid fandom in the global market, this creates value in the music market through licensing, royalties from merchandise, the character market, etc. Because there are so many sectors that want to reach K-POP stars' fans, there is enormous potential to create new economies in various industries. Global digital platforms, audition and planning programs, YouTube, and Instagram, allow for the presentation of contents from different forms and genres. Through these, the industry is opening up to new markets and securing more fans. As K-POP's content portfolios continue to expand, it will make inroads into the global market by utilizing various digital platforms and mobile services.

In 2010, Si-hyuk Bang pointed out the importance of appearance in an audition participant's preparedness. Over the past decade, there have been social debates and public expression about the process of creating idol bands and star-artists. After some persistence in the music industry,  K-POP is producing results globally. The increasing value of K-POP is creating an opening for government-led investment and policies. But, continuous attention is needed related to industries such as distribution, promotion,  publishing, branding, and content licensing. These need to have supports and policies from the government so that the content produced can be delivered to target customers more intensively throughout the global market. If companies in these industries grow with K-POP worldwide, K-POP will grow into a Korean flagship brand with a value similar to Samsung and Hyundai.
