Kim Wansun, everything that K-POP could ask for

In recent years, K-pop has continued to develop, expanding its stage, not only in Asia but worldwide. K-pop is known for its unique qualities, such as unrivaled, precision dance performances, meaningful music videos with an unparalleled sense of color and visualization, trendy beats, magnificent dance breaks and high note integration. Anyone who has the slightest interest in K-pop understands this formula. With this, K-pop has single-handedly left a solid mark on the global music industry.  For those interested in learning about K-pop in greater depth, first, you must understand the roots of this musical and visual composition. Thankfully, we don’t need to set out for an adventure, like trying to recover a lost artifact from the past, because we have active music legends like Kim Wansun, who continues to shine brightly regardless of how much time has passed.

Her first steps into the entertainment industry were in 1983 as a backup dancer for Rhythm Touch with Insooni. She was only 17 years old when she debuted in 1986 with “Tonight.” Considering that the market was flooded with the standard pop, trot, and the occasional rock music, the 17-year-old who competed with dance music and delivered spotless performances was bound to end up at the center of attention. She soon took her place as one of the divas that dominated the ‘80s music scene and the heat continued into the ‘90s.  Her fifth album, released in 1991, sold over one million copies to mark the pinnacle of her career. She then wrapped up her activities in Korea and began performing in Taiwan, gaining notable success before returning to Korea and the admiration of fans. 2011 served as a focal point for new advancements in her music. She began working with artists such as Romantic Couch, Lee Han-chul, Tiger JK, Yoon Jong Shin, and Don Spike across various genres to develop her musical abilities. Like Madonna and Kylie Minogue, she became an artist who improved and evolved as she aged.

When reflecting on her journey from the beginning, her complete resume is like a perfect K-pop product with every joint and bolt secured tightly together. Along with her beauty, her dancing is phenomenal, and her tone unique. She has worked with some of the best producers and even had international experience. And even now, she continues to be exuberantly active. Her endless effort to challenge herself should be in a textbook for young artists on how to manage their musical careers.

1. [Rolling Stone Korea (RSK)] Hello, Kim Wansun. It’s an honor to meet you. Before our interview, please introduce yourself and say hello to the subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea.

Hello, I’m Kim Wansun. Dear subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea, it’s nice to meet all of you.

2. [RSK] Before we get to the actual interview, we want to know how you are doing for all the people waiting for your music and promotions. How are you these days?

Since 2011, I have been continuously releasing single albums. And I’m preparing a new song right now. It’s going to be released in July. One track is done recording, and some post-recording work like shooting the music video still needs to be finalized. I’m planning on releasing two songs this year, one in the summer and one more between fall and winter.

3. [RSK] We heard in April of 2020 that the production of your album, “2020 Kim Wan Sun,” was inspired by the various thoughts and feelings you felt after your music promotions in 2011.  This album, which was also produced in a limited LP edition, had two new songs (YELLOW, High Heels and 8) previously released that you really liked. This made ten tracks in total. We think that you’d have a particular affinity for this album. If you had to choose just one, which song would you say you like the most?

It’s tough to choose just one. (Laugh) I love all the songs, but I would pick “YELLOW” and “Here I Am,” which I recently released. “YELLOW” is a song where you can actually feel the season when it was released. It’s a refreshing song that feels like spring. “Here I Am” is a song that even I am encouraged by when listening to it on my way home after a long day of work. If I turn the volume up inside the car, my mind becomes calm.  I get this feeling that I completed the day well. So, I want to recommend everyone listen to this song on their way home from work.

4. [RSK] We think of you as an icon in the way you present yourself. You always catch the attention of the public with your appearance. Please share one of your great beauty tips!

I think eating small portions is most important. Ever since I was little, I never ate much meat. So, I naturally eat a primarily vegetarian diet. Because of this, my weight hasn’t changed much since I debuted. And when I’m at home, I often stretch and try to move my body a lot. I also try consistently to exercise when I have the time.

5. [RSK] Intense and sometimes sensual choreography can be described as your trademark. One thing that validates your talent in dance is that your great-grandfather on your mother’s side was Han Seong-jun, a traditional Korean dancer. We’re curious if your family influenced your dancing. When did you start dancing?

I definitely do believe that there was a genetic factor in this. I think genetic influence is significant, especially in the field of art. You need to put in a lot of effort. But natural talent, to some point, is required. I started dancing when I was 15.  I began to train under my aunt as a trainee. The training I received there had a big impact on me.

6. [RSK] You once sang the song “Today” from the “Epitone Project” in your own style. You also did an interview where you said that it was a song that you really liked. We thought that this meant that you had an interest in indie music. Is there an indie artist or song you like or person you would like to collaborate with?

There are many indie artists nowadays. The style I like is HYUKOH. Because I like the band’s music, I think it would be fun to work with them one day.

7. [RSK] Kim Chang-hoon and Korea’s pop music legend Shin Jung-hyeon once produced your music. You’ve also worked with the likes of Lee Jang-hee, Lee Kwang-hoon, Son Mu-hyeon, all of whom were the best producers at the time. Were there any unique points or episodes you remember from when you worked with these producers?

In the past, the producer didn’t pay close attention to each and every note in a song as they do now. The arranger was in charge of the arrangement, the band would play, and the singer would sing. Each had their part. So back then, the singer had the freedom to analyze the song in his or her own way and sing according to their feelings and sentiments. Even though I was so young back then, the producers really respected my decisions. Maybe that’s why I like working in that way, as it feels most comfortable. That’s why I self-produce my music. (Laugh)

8. [RSK] At the beginning of your career, rock artists produced a lot of your music. So, there are many elements of rock in your early songs. Were there any difficulties in making dance music because of these elements?

Now that I think about it, I’ve always done things in my own style. My first, second, fourth, and fifth albums mainly consisted of rock-based songs. But since I dance, the arrangements were made in a dance music style rather than a rock style. It was mostly done that way. But “S & Remake” was the one time I tried out a dance music album. The album was made up of dance music songs, but my true colors didn’t really show through. Currently, I select songs that I like without thinking about the genre. Since I write my own songs as well, the style really doesn’t matter. I do this and that. The “2020 Kim Wan Sun” album all had different genres. I think that’s my vibe now. Now, having various genres is my style.

9. [RSK] There are times when even we can’t keep up with the ever-quickly-changing culture. The way we enjoy all these changes has also been modified to focus more on the individual. We are curious about your thoughts regarding this.

I receive a lot of help from people around me. I have learned to embrace the change by hanging out with younger friends. Since being an artist is my job, I have to follow the trends. It’s not too much yet (laugh), and I’m slowly learning.

10. [RSK] There are many artists who have selected you as their role model or who want to be like you.  We’re sure you have experienced a lot of love from your juniors. Please share a time on a program or in a private meeting with a junior that stood out to you.

Recently I met Red Velvet’s SEULGI. The people these days are so good-looking and nice. SEULGI’s personality is so lovely. We ate, talked, and spent time together. It felt really good when SEULGI said that she didn’t feel any difference in our ages.

11. [RSK] There are many “firsts” attached to your name. You are the first singer to have rap on their album and the first female artist to record a million in album sales. These prove that you were an icon that represented an era. Which firsts among these are you the proudest?

The “first” about the album sales is something in which I feel very proud. It’s because the record is amazing for a female solo artist. When I heard the news, I felt really good and hoped that the record would never be broken. Since we’re not in the era of LPs anymore, I joked around that now the record can’t be broken.

12. [RSK] We’re now able to stay updated on how you’re doing through your YouTube channel that you started recently. Is there a special reason you started a YouTube channel?

More than me thinking about it, people around me told me that I need to start a YouTube channel. And since starting the channel, I’ve learned that it’s a medium in which I can personally promote myself. Because nowadays there aren’t many music programs, I’ve realized that I need a space in which I can promote and express myself to continue being an artist. So, I am serious about my channel. (Laugh) Please show lots of love for Kim Wan Sun TV.

13. [RSK] We think that it would be such a great joy for an artist to be able to continue releasing albums. Your first album was released in 1986. This year marks the 35th anniversary of your debut. Could you tell us more about your new album that you’re preparing to release in July? We’re also curious if there is going to be a dance performance.

The single this time is a dance track that is easy to listen to. You can sing it at karaoke. Please sing it often. (Laugh)

14. [RSK] One of the things that makes you so likable is that you’re always so classy. Your music doesn’t simply remain in the past. Even if we compare your past songs with current sounds, they still have appeal. Your music, fashion choices, and appearance seem to all be important elements in expressing yourself.  Could you tell us a little more about your sense of fashion?

Nowadays, I like comfortable clothes. I dress up for special occasions. But usually, I want to be comfortable. This thought hasn’t changed. I usually wear sportswear. But now I think I should wear comfortable clothes and dress up more alternatively. Styles that are natural yet fancy have a particular charm to them.

15. [RSK] Thank you for participating in this extended interview with Rolling Stone Korea. We look forward to and support all of your promotions. Thank you.

I had such a fun time doing this interview. Please be on the lookout for my new song!
