'It's neither man nor woman / Just Me, IDLE' 선언까지 완벽한 기승전결을 들려준다.

Rock Walks with K-Pop, Celebrating its Cool and Awesome Revival

Stand up, rock fans! Nowadays, wherever you go, you can easily hear the sound of electric guitars, which stirs up your blood; the sound of bass guitars that touches the deepest part of your heart; and the sound of drums, which makes you irresistibly stomp your feet. Have you had your Nirvana, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and AC/DC rock T-shirts in the wardrobe for a long time? Well, it’s time to take them out of the wardrobe as these rock T-shirts are emerging as trendy fashion items now! Have time to watch music programs? You will find idol groups wearing leather jackets and dancing with their hands making gestures of devil horns. Wait a second! Aren’t all these stories about the recent K-pop phenomenon? The chemistry between K-pop and rock has developed so quickly. Beyond simply observing and testing an international trend, the K-pop industry is now associating K-pop with various elements of rock this year. Rock exists everywhere in K-pop, from subtler aspects, such as esthetic elements, to more apparent aspects such as the title of a single or an album and the theme for the description of a group. In this flow, emphasis should be placed on the fact that rock and K-pop exchange common sentiments instead of using their unique characteristics as resources.

Last year, TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) and Seventeen released their songs “0X1=Lovesong” and “Rock with You,” respectively. This year, Taeyeon dropped her new single “Can't Control Myself,” which has the vibes of Avril Lavigne. Yena also debuted with her song “Smiley,” which reflects the influence of Taylor Swift. NMIXX, JYP Entertainment’s new passionate girl group, debuted with a title track “O.O,” which embraces both baile funk and clear teenage rock. NCT DREAM played a distorted guitar performance during the highlight of its dance break for its song “Buffering,” instead of “Glitch Mode,” the album that includes this song. Particularly, (G)I-DLE’s new single, “TOMBOY,” is a popular K-pop song that was a rage in the beginning of 2022 and blended rock attitudes with K-pop most successfully.

K-pop fans that are more astute to trends caught a whiff of convergence between rock and K-pop years ago. Since the influence of Generation Z and their dominance in the market, people have expressed their increasing interest in pop-punk, emotional hardcore (emocore), and alternative rock, all of which displayed their influence globally from the late 1990s to the early mid-2000s. The mainstream chart was covered mainly by hip-hop, trendy electro-pop, funk, and disco for a long time. Meanwhile, the young generation projected themselves onto rock stars, who had a huge impact on their childhood, maintained their position as pop stars based on their impressive images and familiar mainstream melodies, but failed to be recognized by critics and fans of other music genres.

Let’s analyze this trend further using the cases of three teams. TXT, debuted in 2021, is a group that took the lead in the rock-influenced K-pop trend a year earlier. Mod Sun, an American musician who stands at the forefront of pop punk revival in the United States, joined them to produce TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s song “0X1=Lovesong” by imbuing this rock-style song with touches of new metal inspired by Limp Bizkit and emocore inspired by My Chemical Romance and The Used. An emocore mix version of “0X1=Lovesong” released after the original version clearly shows the trace of rock pursued by American Gen Z in the present day.

“LO$ER=LOER,” a song from TXT’s repackaged album, carried the rock spirit more emphatically. TXT’s choreography for this song, which is as powerful as the performance of vocalists in this band, is wilder than that for TXT’s previous songs. In addition, this choreography reflects gloomy and resistant feelings more deeply. Singing this song, which covers both the style of emocore in the 2000s and that of post-grunge in the 1990s, TXT made a gesture of turning the hands of a clock to desperately express an empty feeling of a boy who became cynical toward the ice-cold world. Looking at the results, this song would have received more attention had it been released this year.

HYBE LABEL’s ENHYPEN is living proof that this entertainment company was sincerely enthusiastic about breathing rock soul in its music works. ENHYPEN’s album “BORDER: CARNIVAL” is characterized by daring sounds and a music video that is like a scene from Euphoria, HBO Max’s series. Moreover, this album embodies the style of Arcade Fire, a world-famous rock band. If you were a new millennium rock fan, you would have instantly detected that “The Invitation,” the intro song for “BORDER: CARNIVAL” leading to “Drunk-Dazed”, reflects the music style and concept of LCD Soundsystem, who joined as a producer of “Reflektor,” an album created by Arcade Fire in 2013.

ENHYPEN’s songs released after “BORDER: CARNIVAL” also contains rock elements. In its song “Tamed-Dashed,” which represents boys running fast in agony, this band inserted a new wave style guitar riff under the daring bass line leading this song. In its song “Blessed-Cursed,” it combined Y2K culture with guitar sounds of hard rock from the 1970s.

(G)I-DLE’s “TOMBOY” is a crucial song that hit the K-pop chart in 2022. Although many songs attempted to fuse rock with K-pop, none of them penetrated into the perception of the public as intuitively as this song. Soyeon Jeon, the leader of (G)I-DLE, is well-aware of the trends and strengths of its members, including Minnie, Shuhua, Yuqi, and Miyeon. Based on a high level of her understanding of the public’s taste and advantages of this group, Soyeon wrote songs that actively responded to the needs of the market, established a new brand, and completed a story of overcoming problems. As reflected in (G)I-DLE’s album title, they shout “I NEVER DIE.”

Soyeon already tested an international rock trend in her song “BEAM BEAM,” which displayed skateboard culture, in her solo mini album released last year. Poptime, a composer who presented rock-style guitar riffs in songs of Zico and Block B, also supported the production of “BEAM BEAM.” Furthermore, Soyeon boasted a high level of understanding in the concept of (G)I-DLE based on girl crush on tough girls, which was accepted even before this group debuted and has been maintained since. In (G)I-DLE’s song “TOMBOY,” guitar riffs only instantly provide listeners with fun and excitement. However, you can find this short song of about three minutes more enchanting by looking into various details included in it. With the announcement “It's neither man nor woman / Just Me, IDLE”, this song shows the perfect four steps in composition.

K-pop has recently applied rock elements in a witty and effective way. This trend is similar to that in which American Gen Z plays with rock. New generations aren’t bothered with difficult stories, such as a history of rock, a rock spirit, and band composition. Instead, they polish rock fashion and attitudes in a charming way and produce music of new times by applying these elements as they want.

The charm of TXT’s song “0X1=Lovesong” shines thanks to the main flow based on emocore style, to which flavors of trap beats and pop melody are added. You can also enjoy ENHYPEN’s dance pop songs without thinking about the rock elements contained in these songs. (G)I-DLE’s “TOMBOY” is a unique rock-style song as well. Soyeon’s second verse is a rap part that provides a break from constant drumming. If this band rushes ahead without a break during its live performance, it cannot completely show the dynamic aspects of this song.

Sentiments rather than the music itself have significantly contributed to bringing rock back into the center of public culture. Rock has offered a haven for the depressed youth, who have been desperate to expose their anger and helplessness by any means. For this reason, rock ended up successfully catching the heart of new generations.

K-pop in 2022 can be understood in the same way. Idol groups dream about representing symbols of the youth by taking a step away from the massive concept of the fictional world, mysterious world, and mystical icons. They are eager to establish their confident presence with superhuman power beyond the process of being discouraged, enraged, and pressurized by conflicts in chaotic situations. Rock is not the target of indulgence and worship anymore. Rather, it is an excellent tool for completing a cool and awesome genre and achieving self-realization. K-pop and rock will always walk hand in hand.
