LEO, Ten Years in The Making and Still More to Come

The past ten years have been incredibly busy for LEO, a K-pop artist, and now a distinguished musical actor. LEO filled his 20s by running like a racehorse as an idol and actor. For a person who has worked so diligently and responsibly, his time in the military as a social worker was probably relaxing for him. But LEO was born for the stage. After his discharge, he returned with "I'm Still Here." Like his tiring 20s, LEO is busy again with a new beginning.

Hello, LEO! Thank you for doing this interview with Rolling Stone Korea. Before our interview, please say hello and introduce yourself to the subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea.

Hello, subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea! It's LEO, back with "I'm Still Here."

How does it feel to be back with new music after such a long time?

I've waited so long for this moment. I've worked so hard for a year and eleven months to show everyone a new side of me. So, I'm really excited.

What was the most difficult part of making your music?

I think bringing out my inner thoughts and making them into music was the hardest part. Combining my emotions, style, and vibes with suitable instruments and beats was a challenge. The good part was being able to control the whole process. But to write the music myself, I needed to make mature music, rather than just sounding cool. So, that was tough.

Next year, it'll be ten years since your debut. What kind of artist do you want to become and be remembered as?

Like the artists I truly respect, I want to be a singer who is always a source of comfort for the listeners. I want to be an artist who can always inspire listeners, whether they feel happy, sad, or tired.

Does music soothe you in the same way?

When I was younger and played soccer player, I was comforted by music. Whenever things got tough, I listened to music on my cassette player and was encouraged by it. And when I was on the bus, I always listened to music. I hope to become an artist who can make music like that for someone else.

We want to talk about your hiatus. We're curious about what thoughts you had as you were away for so long. How did you spend your time?

I felt really empty at the beginning of my hiatus. To alleviate some of that emptiness, I thought I needed to rest a bit. But since I had never really rested before, it wasn't easy. Once I realized that I missed performing, I spent some time changing my voice as a vocalist, working on my album, and preparing performances. That's how I spent my time during my hiatus.

You took the time to communicate with your fans through V App for the first time in a while. Many fans welcomed you with a lot of witty comments. How did the current fan culture feel as it has changed a lot during your break?

Since I've seen the fan culture up-close for a while now, I don't think I've ever felt that it changed. I've seen fans write funny comments like that for the past five or six years. But our fans have always shown me, love. So, I don't think the fan culture has changed.

Is there anything, in particular, a fan has written that really encouraged you?

There are actually a lot of people who get incredibly nervous when we meet in person. Their hands start trembling while they write what they want to say on a post-it note.  Sometimes their hands get sweaty, and the words get erased. Also, there are the fans who always dance. There is one amazing fan who always prepares a new song and dances in front of us. I think that person has quite a special talent.

As time has gone by, what has changed a lot, and conversely, something that hasn't changed at all in you?

For the thing that has changed, I think I have matured a lot. For the thing that hasn't changed, I think it's my passion. I guess you can say that my passion is what has matured me.

You spent your 20s as LEO of VIXX. Out of all the performances you guys did, was there any specific song that you felt great about or a performance that gave you the most satisfaction?

There are too many songs to pick from because many moments of achievement come to mind. In 2013, at VIXX's first fan meeting, we performed "VOODOO DOLL." Performing in the KSPO Dome was a dream come true. Then, there was when "VOODOO DOLL" got first place, the moment we did our first concert, the moment I released my first solo album, and the moment I debuted as a musical actor. All these moments come to mind.

You live as LEO, the artist, and JUNG TAEKWOON, the musical actor. What does it mean to you to be active with two identities?

I think the artist LEO and the musical actor JUNG TAEKWOON are the same. I don't think it necessarily means that I have two different personalities. I think the difference of responsibility is significant between the artist LEO and the person JUNG TAEKWOON, rather than between the artist LEO and the musical actor JUNG TAEKWOON. In the end, the only difference between the artist LEO and the person JUNG TAEKWOON is whether he performs or not. The artist LEO specializes in and loves the stage and feels a strong sense of responsibility when I am on and off stage. Even when he comes down from the stage, he's always diligently working on something. Then, when I want to rest a bit, I return to the person, JUNG TAEKWOON.

We think you would've had so many special memories as you have come across so many people throughout the years. How does it feel to think about those vivid moments after the passing of ten years?

There are too many memories for me to choose just one. I think those times were really intense. We gave everything we had. We received so much more than we expected. The love we received was so incredibly overwhelming.  I gave my best every single day to repay it. I think that's how the LEO and JUNG TAEKWOON of today have come to be.

There are so many fans waiting for a VIXX comeback. How do you want to spend the rest of your career?

When we talk with each other, we use the words "together," "alone," and "all together" a lot. We want to perform together as a group. But right now, most of us have solo careers and other things going on. So, it's hard to coordinate our schedules while we are all so busy. But we all have thoughts about performing together in the back of our minds.  So for now, we'll show you our individual activities. Then one day, the time will come for us to be together.

Lastly, would there be anything you would like to say to yourself as you open the "second act" of your life?

While preparing for the musical Frankenstein, I was physically stressed and had difficulty singing and acting. But in retrospect, I think I've enjoyed the challenges. There were definitely times when I would be extremely harsh on myself. But I could find myself enjoying the struggle after I saw how much I had improved through the adversities. Then I became more determined to take on challenges and improve myself to overcome even more. Keep an eye out for Taek-woon and LEO, who will continue to grow and mature.

We have truly enjoyed this interview with you. We hope to get to talk with you again.

I really enjoyed this interview with Rolling Stone Korea as I talked about my music and myself. I will always be together with subscribers and fans through good music and performances. So please look forward to it. Thank you.
