K-pop

지난 4년 간 발매했던 앨범으로는 솔로 EP [Say My Name]이 있는데, 앨범 이름과 제목이 같은 <Say My Name>, 국민 썸머송 <바다보러갈래(See Sea)>, 그레이가 피처링한 <달리 (Dally)>’ 등의 히트곡이 수록되어 있다.

<Layin’ Low>

<Layin’ Low>

The Fearlessness of Hyolyn

How The Sexiest Woman In K-POP Continues To Push The Boundaries

Born and raised in South Korea, the musician grew up with her parents and sister and had an upbringing filled with family gatherings. Driven by her love of music and singing, Hyolyn, now 30, has spent over a decade making her mark in the music industry, first as a member of Sistar, who were known as the ‘Summer Queens’ in K-pop. After the group disbanded in 2017, Hyolyn would reintroduce herself to the public by setting up her own label, Bridge Entertainment and releasing the sensual, jaw-dropping song single “Dally.”

With a strong appreciation and respect for multiculturalism, honeyed vocals and empowering music videos, Hyolyn has worked her way to become a Korean artist who has great international appeal. Over the past four years, she's released her solo EP Say My Name. The project contains hits such as the titular single “Say My Name,” the summer anthem “See Sea'' and “Dally”, which featured K-hip-hop artist Gray.

On 12th January Hyolyn released her single “Layin Low,” a sensual R&B track that showcases her growth as an artist – she challenged herself vocally, took risks with the choreography, and chose not to be constrained by what people think a female pop star should do. With plans to release a new album and to participate in Queendom2, Hyolyn is proving that she is a force to be reckoned with and she hasn’t even reached her final stage of evolution.

In a Zoom interview with Rolling Stone Korea, Hyolyn opened up her spellbinding choreography, how Beyonce inspires her, and how she continues to push boundaries in the music industry.

Congratulations on your single "Layin Low.” How would you describe the performance side of the song?

Even though I’m a vocalist I’m also a performer. And so, when I do perform, I think about the content of the song, and this time around, I thought about what it would be like in a very ordinary male/ female relationship. So, I tried to recreate that in my choreography. Some of the moves that you see in the choreography are sort of the recreation of the relationship interaction we would have between a male and a female.

Secondly, I wanted to show that I’ve improved a lot from the previous types of choreographies that I’ve done. I tried to challenge myself, push the boundaries and test new waters.

It's been almost eight years since you had worked with Jooyoung, what made you decide to collaborate with him for “Layin Low”?

I worked with him seven to eight years ago and I thought our collaboration process was excellent. I thought to myself back then that I wanted to work with him again if the opportunity ever presents itself. So this time when I got the song I thought this song would fit and we could work to get the best out of the song. So I asked him personally, and he obviously consented so that’s what happened.

You worked with Nicole Kirkland for “Layin Low” and Aaliya Janelle for “Dally,” do you pick the choreographer before you even know what you want to do? Or do you hear the song and think "okay, I think this choreographer would be good for me?"

I definitely need to hear the song. I need to know what type of concept I’m going to do and the thematic elements, and then I choose the choreographer that would best help me to elevate the song.

How long did it take you to master the choreography for "Layin Low"?

So, before I went to LA to actually do the choreography, we had two zoom sessions learning some basic moves and main moves. Then I went over there, and it took me about five days to a week to fully master everything.

Your songs “Say My Name,” “Dally,” and “Layin Low” are so sexy. How do you find the courage to put yourself out there into the world knowing that there's a perception of how people think a woman should be versus you just doing what you want to do for the sake of your art?

For me there's not a set image of a woman that I feel is appropriate and what society probably ends up stressing on people. I don’t really think that deeply about the image of a woman but at the same time I think from an artist's mind. So, when I do these moves, they tend to end up becoming the sexier type of choreography. I think about what can be most powerful and best suited for that song. It's not necessarily that I’m purposely looking for sexier choreography, but it ends up being something that I do to express myself. I like powerful but feminine moves embedded together, so I think that it is seen as sexier choreography from Korean perception.

In several of your music videos, you select dancers who are Black, white, Latinx etc, what made you start doing that? And do you think that there has been a shift in the industry to be more diverse?

I want to credit the choreographer that I worked with who actually suggested using diverse dancers, and for myself I like cultural centric talent. All the abilities were different because of the diversity you saw. I liked that because it was a unique factor that makes my music different from other artists, and I am from a different culture too from those dancers too so that dynamic was really good for me.

When will you be releasing a new album?

I hope to do it this year for sure. I’ve actually been preparing for this since last year. You know, getting good songs from different producers and composers and writing lyrics myself. I have been developing it more [the album] in my own style, and with the changing times, it has given me different inspiration. So I’m really looking forward to compiling it as a comprehensive gift for my fans this year.

Are there any singers, producers, or songwriters in Korea or internationally that you would like to work with?

Cardi B!

I think Cardi B would be a perfect collaboration.

The reason I want to work with people abroad is because I really like spanning different genres of music, so I don't want to be limited by what Korean pop culture is. I want to work with and collaborate with global artists. And I also want to network with more foreign fans who have less preconceived notions about what type of artist I am.

How has public perception about you changed ever since you went solo versus when you were a member of Sistar?

When I went solo I wanted to experiment around with different genres and as a female group, there were some limitations as to what type of choreography I could do. At first my public perception was still probably associated with being a member of Sista but they [the public] are now understanding why I went solo. People are more accepting of me going solo now.

Were people not accepting of you going solo before?

At the beginning, they weren't accepting. They wanted the group Sistar, and my image in there to continue for longer and so I guess they probably felt this was too soon.

It was announced that you're going to be part of the line- up on Queendom2. What made you decide that you wanted to be a part of the show?

I am very thankful that I got this opportunity. When I accepted the offer it was because with a pandemic going on for the past two years, I had a limited opportunity to meet my fans and to show different types of performances. So I thought this would be a great opportunity to engage with the audience and my fans throughout the world. I am delighted to do it.

Are there any performances that inspire you? E.g Whenever I'm feeling  down I watch Beyoncé’s 2013 Super Bowl performance. So I wanted to know if there's any particular performances that have resonated with you?

I’m actually similar to you, I resonate with what you just said about Beyonce. Because when I need to be motivated and inspired and I feel a blockage in terms of choreography or as an artist, I watch Beyonce world tour over and over again. So I actually totally agree with you.

If anything else you’d like to tell your fans?

I wish that this pandemic situation gets better soon so that I can meet my fans in person. I also want my fans to stay safe and healthy until they meet again. I hope that they'll love watching me on Queendom2.
