Leaving a trail of lingering emotions through music, Sunwoo Junga

It is hard to define Sunwoo Junga’s music in just one word. I wouldn’t even try. The music she creates is like a TV show with such an incredibly captivating ending; we’re looking forward to the next episode. The music “trailers” she presents keep us in anticipation over what’s coming next.

Some artists create songs so simple that a mere five minutes can feel quite uninspiring. But, Jung-a’s works immerse you so deeply that you lose track of the passage of time. There is something special concentrated in her songs and experienced in the briefest of moments. There is an extraordinary power in her music that can send emotions whirling. Is Sunwoo Jung-a constantly struggling to reflect that unique character we appreciate about her music?

If so, maybe that’s why she felt a sense of ease sharing the story of her music using the spoken word in this interview. Conveying emotions through the written word can be challenging. Every word and response that Sunwoo Jung-a provides in this interview clearly express feelings such as joy, longing, fun, and determination.

Join us here at Rolling Stone Korea to learn more about the story of Sunwoo Jung-a, an artist with true innocence who deeply cares about music.

Hello, Ms. Sunwoo Junga! It is such an honor for us at Rolling Stone Korea to be interviewing you. Could you please briefly introduce yourself before we start the interview?

Hello, I’m Sunwoo Junga. I’m a musician from Korea. I spend most of my time as a singer-songwriter and sometimes make music for other artists and projects.

You did a solo concert for the first time in two and a half years. It was titled “FESTIVAL SUNWOOJUNGA: Burst It All.” You probably had a meaningful time with your fans communicating with them through music. What were you thinking about the most when you prepared for the concert?

I was thinking, “How can I communicate the best at this moment?” That’s always the number one, most important goal, not only for concerts but albums as well. I always think about that. This concert had a theme of “A Day of Festival.” So, I thought hard about ensuring the show didn’t have any dull moments.

You’ve tried many different hairstyles. You have the power to make those eye-catching hairstyles look good. Is it your idea to try new looks, outfits, or concepts? Or does someone recommend them to you?

I always suggest something spectacular, and then the staff always rejects it or finds something more appropriate. (laughter) I have my own standards for presenting my music because I make it. But, I do not have a good sense of style or fashion. Like I said earlier, we’ve been producing the results together and spending more time together as time goes by. The staff finds the basic direction based on specific keywords reflecting the current trends. Then, I find the balance with the music. For example, I might say, “Plan B looks prettier, but I think Plan A goes better with the song because...” Those shocking styles are proof that I stuck to my first suggestion. (haha)

What I notice the most when I listen to your album or watch videos of you live are your delicate expressions. I’m sure that many fans particularly like your whispery singing style just as much as your high-pitched notes. Is there a set of routines or a way you focus on the music when you record songs or perform on stage?

Wow! That’s such a fun question! I really like to whisper when I sing. As I put more power into the sound, the resolution gets higher. The song gets better the softer I become. So, I think flexibility is quite important. And by flexibility, I mean flexibility in the muscles of the vocal cords, neck, and shoulders. I stretch as often as I can before recording or performing live. I force myself to do stretching when I’m really busy because my muscles tense up easily.

It would be great if I could articulate the emotions and purity I feel when I make music during recording or performances. But it does not just happen, which is painful. I try really hard to listen to other sounds besides my own voice, like those of the instruments or the chorus. Music cannot be presented through my voice alone, which is obvious. But sometimes, even I forget that. My body feels that again. Then, finally, it becomes an art beyond just moving the vocal cords to find the right pitch and rhythm.
