Dermot Kennedy, a gold-like vocals completed through weathering

Dermot Kennedy is a singer-songwriter representing Ireland. He started busking at the age of 16. In the beginning, he had no equipment, so his vocals served as microphones and speakers. Having become part of Dublin’s streets where countless people come and go, he has now grown into an artist who travels around the world to tour. Dermot Kennedy, who believes that mankind shares universal feelings. When he told the story that he was living under the concept of his new album "Sonder" under the belief that he and his music were one, his voice was full of sincerity. Let’s explore the path that Dermot Kennedy has taken with Rolling Stone Korea. The road which is full of clear passion and true heart.

1. [RSK] First of all, congratulations on the successful completion of the “Hyundai Davinci Motel” performance. I want to hear how you feel about the show.

When I’m on tour, I’m playing in so many different rooms and so many different sorts of energies. And what’s really difficult is when I feel people aren’t paying attention to the lyrics. But then that day was beautiful, because people were paying full attention. As artists, we spend so much time on lyrics, working so hard, writing them down, and getting them perfect. And so, to be in an environment where people are really paying attention, I love that.

2. [RSK] I heard some of the audience cried while listening to your song. Have you noticed that?

Yes. Sometimes people tell me stories about something they have gone through and how my music helped them in certain situations. Then it feels like music exists between me and them. And it doesn’t feel like me doing this for them. It feels like we both benefit from the music.

3. [RSK] You came all the way from Ireland to Korea. How’s your time been in Korea so far?

Everybody is so kind. I strolled down yesterday and it’s been a really beautiful experience. I’m very glad to be here for the first time.

4. [RSK] In terms of influences, your music has been influenced by hip-hop and folk. So, how would you explain your music, in your own terms?

I find this really difficult. When I’m with somebody like a band member or friend, and they ask me this question, I’m like, “You guys do it. Because I don’t know.” I think the best way to describe it is someone who is a singer-songwriter, listens to hip-hop all the time… that’s kind of how it works into my music. I never want to pretend I’m something I’m not. It just happens naturally.

5. [RSK] I saw a video of you singing <Kiss me>. As I listened to the lyrics, I felt that maybe you don't believe in eternity, but only in the moment. Do you think everything doesn't last forever?

Yes, that’s true. I try to be my best in the moment. I knew of one couple; the husband was like 100 years old, and his wife was 98. When he passed away, she was sad but also quite calm about it because she was like “I’ll see you soon.” This sort of belief that they will be together forever is a lovely thing, but for me personally, it’s quite a scary thing. Because I think our life is all we have and so we get scared about time running out. But for me, I try to exist in the present moment. But I’m not really good at it though. (Laughs)

6. [RSK] In terms of busking, when was your brightest moment and when was your darkest moment? And how did you overcome it?

There has never been a time that was really bad. But what I remember that really frustrated me is ‘when you feel like you have something important so that you can bring to the world and no one is paying attention.’ And busking, playing in the street, is the craziest example, because you can sing in people’s faces all day and people just keep walking by the whole time. That can be a really frustrating moment.

But doing the busking that I’m doing right now around the world is a really lovely way to do it. Because say, usually, when you are on tour, you kind of arrive on the bus, go to the venue, play the show, get back on the bus, and leave town. And you never have that much experience. But busking, you get to see architecture, probably in the middle of the city or in the park somewhere. So, it’s a really nice way to experience the city. So busking is giving me a lot of good memories. But I don’t miss it, because it is hard. People who have a career with street performance every single day have my respect. Because it is not easy.

7. [RSK] Did the busking experiences give you confidence?

Totally. When I was 18, 19, I had nothing to lose, and nothing to worry about. It definitely gave me confidence. Literally, you are at the bottom of the ladder in the music industry, so it’s a really kind of free place to be.

8. [RSK] I think I'd be nervous if I performed in front of a lot of people. How do you raise your emotional level on stage?

I don't know why, but I don't get nervous on big stages. After that big show, I was like, “Well, I’m lucky enough to not get nervous.” We had a few shows in Dublin during the summer, and they were big shows as well. During the show, it felt kind of a bit scary for a minute. But I focused a lot on my breathing. It is crazy when you look at that many people, and you feel a responsibility to deliver the songs and it’s all on you. Fingers crossed for now. I love it.

9. [RSK] I usually listen to your songs at night. When I feel drained after a long day, I feel comfortable, as if the song is hugging me. So, I think you play the role of a healer for people through music. Does healing correspond to the influence you want to have on the public through music?

Definitely. Because that’s what music did for me. It’s hard for me to imagine or figure out that something that I made can mean that much to people, but it’s a beautiful thing. I love that idea that anyone can be helped by music.

10. [RSK] Your voice is really powerful. Sometimes it is referred to as “weathered vocals,” and I wonder what kind of effort you made to make these sounds. Just as a tuner finetunes their instruments.

Again, playing in the street is huge for that. Because in the beginning, I didn’t have a speaker or microphone. So, I had to be as loud as I could. I started that at 16. And when I was 25, I started touring and started getting really busy, but I’d never been trained to sing. So, I was singing in the wrong way for 15 years. A few years ago, when I played at the festival in Finland, I realized that I couldn’t hit the same note. So, after that, I had to relearn how to pull breath. It’s like yoga or meditation, and it’s really good for me in terms of taking tension away from my body. I’m still learning every day.

11. [RSK] What’s your favorite emotion?

Perhaps it is a feeling, not an emotion, but my favorite feeling is when I’m good with everybody and nothing stresses me. Because I don’t mind if the music stresses me. When I feel like, with everyone I care about deeply, I’m in a good place with them—that’s my favorite thing. Like personal peace, because it’s hard. (Smiles)

12. [RSK] What is the process of writing lyrics?

My favorite is to be sitting at the piano and writing at the same time. Very rarely I write lyrics first and put them to music. But, usually, those two things happen at the same time because then they work and complement each other. In the process of working on the title, I don't think I have a thorough plan to do this. After writing a song, I tend to watch how it naturally settles down.

13. [RSK] Your career is growing for sure and, eventually, you will reach a higher point in your life. What are the core values you want to hold on to?

It’s very important for me to be happy with myself and where I am as a person. That will be the main thing—that my real life, like family, friends, and everything that is most important to me stays the same. Because when I go home, that’s all that I have. It doesn’t matter that I’m a musician or an artist. I’m just Dermot to them. I’m trying to change many things, but not that one. (Laughs)

14. [RSK] Can you briefly introduce your new album, “Sonder”?

The idea starts from being more aware of other people’s emotions. We all have the same emotions. We all have good days and bad days. So, “Sonder” is the awareness of everybody going through the same stuff. In terms of emotions and human connection, I want to feel connection as much as possible. But, I also want people to be aware that I was just happen to be at the center. I want to share equally. And that idea already affects my life. It’s a bad idea for me that give an album and a title, and I don’t live by that idea. So, in that way, I feel I already have “Sonder” and that makes me try to care more about people, be more open, etc.

15. [RSK] I think there will be a lot of people who become your fans through this concert. There are people waiting for a solo concert, can we look forward to it?

Yes, I would love that. We’ll get back for sure. I’m going to come back with the band!
