Another One Bites The Dust의 중독적인 베이스 리프를 떠올릴 것이다.

We Long for a Summer of Hope

By Kim Young Dae (Music critic)

The thick groove that opens the song will remind some people of the iconic drumbeat of the song, “Billy Jean.” It may remind others of the addicting bass riff from “Another One Bites the Dust.” This summoning of American and British giants Michael Jackson and Queen by BTS is more than just an expression of respect or a simple parody. It’s a symbolic declaration of their position as the faces of not only K-pop but of pop worldwide. Some people who listen to this track may think of it as nothing more than a retro pop song and a continuation of “Dynamite.” But musical details in this new single, "Butter," and its direction, are a bit different from "Dynamite."

Even if you just look at the visual elements of the music video, “Butter” doesn’t project the same fairytale-like innocence of “Dynamite.” This feel is reflected in the upgraded, more sophisticated sound and arrangements.

Compared to “Dynamite’s” continuous smooth and pleasant developments from start to finish, “Butter” has a complex and delicate flavor reflected in its interesting contrasts. The song starts out with the beat, not the melody. It changes up the “heated” atmosphere like the hot asphalt that flows into a stopped car.
But the mood of the song changes as it increases the pace with a short but classy keyboard chord and vocal harmony. As it receives tailwind by adding small sound layers, the song lifts off to welcome a cool wind.

The chorus of “Butter” is exciting but unpredictable, which makes it fun. The sophisticated keyboard sound is said to be a style copied from producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Much like their style, “Butter” uses lyrical compositions and unique development of chords. This is reminiscent of the ones used in the ‘80s hit songs by The Human League and Janet Jackson. This not only creates a song with a beautiful contrast in the feeling of each verse but also replicates the powerful emotions that are trademark characteristics of BTS’s music.

The vocal capabilities that effectively express the bright but lyrical emotions of the song should be noted.  Jung Kook’s rhythm created by staccato and syncopation and his innate sense for timing is enough to remind you of Michael Jackson or Bruno Mars. Throughout the song, he plays a significant role in the verse and the chorus to help create powerful momentum in the track. Jimin also plays an essential role in this song in the audio and the visual by imprinting his unforgettable presence wherever he is, even for a short amount of time.  The pre-chorus part before the second verse highlights his gentle vocal sound that is delightful even without high notes or difficult techniques.

The last two singles by BTS have both been about the frustration, hope, and comfort they felt during the pandemic. “Butter” is the same. They are still talking about hope, though also still going through times of anxiety. But the moment of celebration is closer to hope than reality. This is why the feeling of wistfulness and longing that you can’t help but feel is present in the beat of “Butter.”
