Reviewing BTS’s New Anthology Album: “Proof”

Yes, BTS is a K-pop band—at least a tenth of the world's population knows that. But few would regard BTS as just another K-pop group: from speaking at the UN on multiple occasions, being a walking enterprise, and constantly being in the public eye to being one of the most popular celebrities whose SNS posts are instantly flooded with hearts and retweets and who have everyone whipping out their cameras at every opportunity, their record-breaking streak puts them in the league of even the most accomplished athletes.

On June 10, 2022, the group released the first anthology album of their nine-year career. The three-disc compilation album contains 48 carefully curated tracks, including previous title tracks, demos, and new singles like “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment).” Aptly titled “Proof,” this album is BTS’s testimony that at the heart of their massive fame lies a decade-long commitment to making good music.

BTS as Singers

The album kicks off with “Born Singer.” This is a sample song uploaded to the group’s official SoundCloud account on July 9, 2013, when BTS’s fan club—who together with the group members would be writing BTS’s history—was officially named ‘A.R.M.Y’ at BTS’s fan cafe. Based on J. Cole’s “Born Sinner” (2013), this track expresses the members’ emotions and ambitions during their debut stage.

CD1, which includes “Born Singer,” can be considered a ‘hall of fame’ that houses the group’s hits throughout their career: chart-toppers like “Boy with Luv” (2019), their most-viewed music video on YouTube (approximately 1.55 billion views as of July 13, 2022), "ON," the title track on Korea’s best-selling album "Map of the soul: 7" (2020), and “Butter” (2021), which topped the Billboard Singles Chart for 9 weeks. These are the tracks that shook the stock message board of HYBE, the South Korean entertainment company backing the group. But why, some might wonder, is “Born Singer,” which has been streaming for free on SoundCloud for nine years, the first track?

“Born Singer” represents the origin of BTS. Released on the 27th day of their debut, this song embodies the pure happiness and thrill that BTS felt on stage in that moment. It needed no complex messages or lofty concepts; the sheer warmth and sincerity that flow though the music and lyrics contain the true essence of ‘BTS as singers’ and symbolize their eventual return to square one after walking in a long circuit, so to speak, a sentiment conveyed in the title track “Yet To Come.” It therefore comes as no surprise that the song has increasingly become a fan favorite as they witnessed BTS’s journey from performing on that small and modest debut stage to booking the world's largest stadium, raking in record sales equivalent to ‘market capitalization.’ “Born Singer” makes you see ‘BTS as singers’ without the light and darkness, issues and controversies, admiration and criticism surrounding the group.

BTS is multi-dimensional. Their brief meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in May was an event that threw light on the complex identity of the group as well as its international influence. BTS, a group comprising members of Korean nationality, visited the White House to commemorate the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and talked about the US Anti-Asian hate crime bill. RM, the group’s leader, led the conversation, speaking as a diplomat rather than a musician. With humility and poise, they advocated the rights of Asian Americans and other social minorities in the U.S., successfully and attractively.

It seemed like the perfect example of diplomacy. The interests of both parties, BTS and the Biden government, were fulfilled in equal measure. Ahead of the midterm elections, Biden invited the most talked about Asians in America to appeal to voters of the AANHPI community, the traditional support base of the Democratic Party. And BTS made themselves heard and cemented their mainstream status while strengthening solidarity with the Asian community, wherein lies a notable segment of their millions-strong fanbase. Undoubtedly, BTS emerged the winner of this ‘diplomacy,’ but is that all it was for BTS as singers, yet another splendid achievement? Wouldn’t they have wondered, “Do we have to go to the White House to continue to top Billboard charts and win a Grammy? Isn’t it enough to just make good music?”

By including “Born Singer” as the opening track, “Proof” conveys a sense of returning to ‘square one,’ redefining the true essence of BTS—despite becoming a big name and having an arguably unprecedented impact on music, industry, and trends worldwide—as ‘Singer BTS,’ echoing the voices of the members as themselves and not through the voices of journalists, YouTubers, politicians, or critics.

From the Desert to the Sea

“Yet To Come,” serving as the album's title track, is the ending theme of ‘BTS Chapter 1,’ a concept explained by the group some time ago. Fans will be quick to recognize the numerous representative works of previous hits woven into the music video. The literal interpretation of the title—that something is yet to come—is connected to the “Most Beautiful Moment in Life” trilogy (Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa), which earned BTS their first major award, completing the message ‘The Most Beautiful Moment has not yet come' and building one’s anticipation of 'things that have yet to come.’

The music video has an open ending in which the seven members who are aboard a bus that appears to be stranded in a desert look out the window dreamy-eyed. The sound of waves splashing and seagulls flapping their wings envelops the scene like a gentle sea breeze, yet what you see outside is the desolate desert of the Death Valley in the U.S. Could it be that BTS is looking at one of the driest places on Earth, one that was a sea 200 million years ago, one that was first discovered by explorers who came to the West in search of gold mines?

The answer can be found in the hidden track “Sea” from “LOVE YOURSELF 承 'Her'” (2017). Treasured by fans because of its heartfelt lyrics and thought-provoking metaphors that liken the dilemma of success to the sea and the desert, this song, while not included in “Proof,” is paradoxically the most important song in BTS’s “Proof.”

“Sea” signifies the origin of the worldview “If we are together, the desert becomes the sea” that connects BTS’ narrative of adversity and ARMY. This worldview came into being at the “The Wings Tour The Final” in December 2017 at the Gocheok Sky Dome. This concert proved that BTS, an idol group that at one time was denied the opportunity to appear on TV music shows, became 'super idols' that sold the most albums that year, four years after debut, and sold out the largest indoor concert in Korea. This remarkable turnaround narrative, written together by BTS and its ARMY, came to life at the concert through the storytelling of “Sea,” transforming the desert and the sea into symbols of their journey together.

The worldview of “Sea” is reflected once again in “Yet To Come.” A horizon reminiscent of a beach, a landscape where soothing sand dunes meet a blue sky—this is a recurring motif in the music video; this visual attempts to portray the expanse of the sea, where you can see the beach from the sea and the desert from the beach. The answer to the ending, where the members breathe, sing, and run, can be found in the worldview of “Sea.” What BTS is gazing at with dreamy eyes in the Death Valley is Chapter 2, 'another desert.’

“The most beautiful days have not yet begun. We rose again. The road was still there. On this road, the dreams of seven little boys awaited us. All of a sudden we were running. We now have a dream we have never dreamed before. A road no one has ever walked. Despair that no one has ever experienced. You have to cross the desert to get to the sea. We walk again in search of another desert.” - From the opening VCR, at the “Wings Final Concert”

On June 13, 2022, the 9th anniversary of BTS' debut, “the ‘Proof’ Live” was streamed on BTS’s official YouTube channel. This 25-minute-long segment was filmed at Lake Dolores Waterpark in the Death Valley. In a long since non-functional water park without water, the members wear sea-blue outfits and sing the main song of the album. On June 13, the day of their debut, at their ‘square one,’ they become the sea in a dry desert. And thus BTS’s Chapter 1 is complete.

Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa, the Most Beautiful Moment in Life Yet to Come

In a scene from “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” a play by Edward Albee, George, a middle-aged college professor talks about a time when he was 16, having fun drinking with his friends at a back alley bar in New York, and concludes by saying, “that was the greatest day of my youth.”

You can never know what might be the best moment of your life unless you look back over the distant past. Likewise, we might not be able to put a finger on what is the best moment of BTS, the group that made countless headlines prefixed with ‘the best’—not for now; they still have a long way to run. BTS Chapter 2 has officially begun. The seven members will explore new possibilities in various ways. We hope that BTS can fulfill the ‘dream that they have never dreamed’ in ‘another desert’ called Chapter 2.
